Dalai Lama to lecture on neuroscience amidst protests:
Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama , is to give a lecture to an international neuroscience conference, despite protests from some of the delegates. His lecture on the neuroscience of meditation, and participation in a discussion on the 'Science and Clinical Applications of Meditation', is planned for the prestigious annual conference of the Society for Neuroscience , to be held in Washington DC in November. The Dali Lama has a longstanding interest in neuroscience, having founded the Mind and Life Institute , to promote dialogue between science and buddhism. The Institute has regular meetings between the Buddhist leader and leading neuroscientists, which has resulted in research collaborations and a number of books that have included transcripts and analyses of the gatherings. His talk also comes at a time when therapies based on Buddhist 'mindfulness' techniques are being found to be increasingly effective for treating physical and mental distress in well-controlled scientific studies Some potential delegates are protesting his appearance, however, suggesting science and religion should not be mixed and declaring his views to be in 'poor scientific taste'. W hen Pope John Paul II called for interfaith dialogue to be a key component of Christian preparation for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, his words were surely welcomed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The exiled spiritual and temporal leader of Tibetan Buddhists has himself been calling for renewed cooperation among the world's religions. And so it came that a few months back the Dalai Lama, under heavy security because of constant threats to his life, descended by helicopter to the Trappist Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani, in Kentucky, to attend an East-West gathering of the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue. It was a gesture of solidarity to his friend the late Thomas Merton, taking place on the grounds where Merton had lived. At the July gathering, saffron-robed Buddhist monks and nuns, gray-robed Zen monks and nuns pray and share spiritual insights with black-robed Benedictine and white-and-black-robed Cistercian monks and nuns. And in their midst the Dalai Lama, a world religious leader, sits as a monk among monks, not separately on a dais.

Name at birth: Lhama Thondup or Lhama Dhondrub Born to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet, Lhama Dhondrub was soon recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama (Mongolian for "Ocean of Wisdom"). In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is believed to be an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion; when the Dalai Lama dies, his soul is believed to pass into the body of an infant. Upon recognition, Lhama Dhondrub was renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, and is referred to as Yeshe Norbu, the Wishfulfilling Gem or Kundun. Trained as a monk, when the Dalai Lama was a teenager he became the head of the Tibetan government in their fight against the occupying forces of the People's Republic of China. Since 1959 the Dalai Lama has been the leader of the government in exile. His travels in the cause of peace and a free Tibet have made him an international celebrity, and in 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. FOUR GOOD LINKS

When Lhamo Thondup was born on July 6, 1935, in the Tibetan province of Amdo, his family had no idea how important their fifth child was to become. It was not until nearly three years later that his true destiny, as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, was revealed.
The toddler was already set apart by his prominent ears and "tiger striped" markings on his legs – special signs sought by a commission dispatched by the Tibetan government to find the new Lama. He also picked out, from a jumble of ordinary objects, a pair of spectacles, a pen and an eating bowl which belonged to his predecessor, who had died two years earlier.
Convinced he was the child they had been searching for, in 1939 the commission moved Lhamo to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. He immediately confirmed their decision by spontaneously locating where the previous Dalai Lama had kept his false teeth.

Bay Area Reporter, June 19th, 1997
The Dalai Lama, world-revered leader of millions of Buddhists and leader of the Tibetan people, spoke out strongly against discrimination and violence against lesbians and gays during an extraordinary Wednesday, June 11 meeting in San Francisco with lesbian and gay Buddhists, clergy, and human rights activists. The religious leader said at the press conference that he had previously been asked his views on gay marriage, and said that such social sanction of gay relationships "has to be judged in the context of the society itself and the laws and social norms." During the 45-minute meeting, the Nobel peace laureate and Buddhist religious leader voiced his support for the full recognition of human rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Buddhist sexual proscriptions ban homosexual sexual activity and heterosexual sex through orifices other than the vagina, including masturbation or other sexual activity with the hand. Buddhist proscriptions also forbid sex at certain times - such as during full and half moon days, the daytime, and during a wife's menstrual period or pregnancy - or near shrines or temples. Adultery is considered sexual misconduct, but the hiring of a female prostitute for penile-vaginal sex is not, unless one pays a third party to procure the person. From a "Buddhist point of view," lesbian and gay sex "is generally considered sexual misconduct," the Dalai Lama told reporters at a press conference a day earlier.

    Dalai Lama envoys visit Tibet
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 LHASA, Tibet (CNN) Envoys of the exiled Dalai Lama were in Tibet for the first time in 20 years Monday, a Tibetan government spokesman said. No other details of the visit were made available. Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen representatives of the Dalai Lama began their visit in Beijing last week according to a statement from the Dalai Lama's office in Dharamsala, India. "His holiness the Dalai Lama is very pleased that the team is able to make such a visit," the statement said. Beijing's description of the delegation as a private, fact-finding mission appeared designed to downplay the significance of the visit and dodge questions about its nature, including the possibility that China's leadership and the exiled Tibetan government are trying to reach consensus on the future of the Himalayan region. Last week the Tibetan envoys visited Beijing, the first official contact with the Chinese government in almost 10 years.

China keeps up heat on Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama has challenged China to send an envoy to check up on his "anti-Chinese activities" By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China China is keeping up its attack on the Dalai Lama's visit to Taiwan, accusing the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader of collaborating with pro-independence forces on the island. A commentary by the official Xinhua news agency Sunday said the Dalai Lama's tour was "a political visit" driven by separatist motives he shares with officials in Taipei. "The Dalai's second Taiwan trip will certainly be a political visit for collaborating with Taiwan independence forces to separate the motherland," Xinhua said. Pointing to the planned meetings between the exiled Tibetan leader and leading members of Taiwan's government the agency asked: "how could Dalai's trip be a pure 'religious tour'?" On Saturday, at the start of his 10-day visit to the island, the Dalai Lama called on China to send a representative to the island to "watch my movements and investigate whether I'm involved in anti-Chinese activities" as Beijing claims.

Dalai Lama and Bush meet 'like old friends'
The Dalai Lama speaks to reporters after meeting with Bush at the White House on Wednesday WASHINGTON (CNN) The Dalai Lama has described a meeting in Washington with U.S. President George W. Bush as "excellent," much like "when two old friends" get together for a reunion. "I very much appreciate his human warmth," Tibet's exiled spiritual leader told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. The meeting with Bush was held despite angry complaints from China. China sees the Dalai Lama as a supporter of independence for Tibet, which it regards as Chinese territory. The Dalai Lama said he told President Bush that "China is a great nation, very important nation. Therefore, China should not isolate." He emphasized that "I am not seeking independence, I am seeking genuine autonomy." He told the president that the next time Bush meets with Chinese officials, "he can show to the Chinese leaders, I am not seeking independence."
