Dalai Lama 'refused' Russian visa
China refuses to recognize the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has been forced to can a visit to Mongolia after Russia refused to issue him a visa. The Dalai Lama had been scheduled to visit Mongolia this week, but because Russia refused to allow him to transit through, the trip has been postponed until next year, The Associated Press reports. While Foreign Ministry officials in Moscow have said they were not aware of the request, a Tibetan spokesperson has said the problem arose because the Dalai Lama's trip clashed with several visits by Chinese leaders. Beijing has been trying to tighten its grip on Tibet's restive and highly religious people since communist troops arrived in the Himalayan region in 1950. Nine years later, the Dalai Lama fled into exile as an uprising against Chinese rule collapsed, and now lives with other Tibetan exiles in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala.

MESSAGE SUPPORTING THE MORATORIUM ON THE
DEATH PENALTY
In general, death is something none of us wants, in fact it is something we don't even like to think about. When death takes place naturally, it is a process beyond our control to stop, but where death is willfully and deliberately brought about, it is very unfortunate. Of course, within our legal systems there are said to be certain reasons and purposes for employing the death penalty. It is used to punish offenders, to prevent them ever repeating their misdeed and to deter others. However, if we examine the situation more carefully, we will find that these are not the real solutions.
Harmful actions and their tragic consequences all have their origin in disturbing emotions and negative thoughts, and these are a state of mind, whose potential we find within all human beings. From this point of view, every one of us has the potential to commit crimes, because we are all subject to negative disturbing emotions and negative mental qualities. And we will not overcome these by executing other people.
What is deemed criminal can vary greatly from country to country. In some countries, for example, speaking out for human rights is considered criminal, whereas in other countries preventing free speech is a crime. The punishments for crimes are also very different, but usually include various forms of imprisonment or hardship, financial penalties and, in a number of countries, physical pain. In some countries, crimes that the government considers very serious are punished by executing the person who committed the crime.

HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA The Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual and temporal Leader of the Tibetan people. He was born on July 6, 1935, in a small village called Taktser, in north eastern Tibet. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognised at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lamas are the manifestations of the Buddha of Compassion who chose to take rebirth for the purpose of serving other human beings. Dalai Lama means Ocean of Wisdom. Tibetans normally refer to His Holiness as Yeshe Norbu, the Wish-fulfilling Gem or simply Kundun, meaning The Presence. When the 13th Dalai Lama had passed away in 1933, the task which confronted the Tibetan Government was not to simply appoint a successor but to seek for and discover a child in whom the Buddha of Compassion would incarnate. It was not necessary that the child should have been born just at the time of the death of His predecessor, or even soon after. As on former occasions, there would be indications of the directions in which the search should be made, and that the child would be found to possess physical and mental attributes similar to those of his predecessor.

CBC Radio's Mary Wiens reports on the Tibetan community in Toronto.
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, has lived in exile since 1959, but he is still considered by many to be both the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people.
He was born Lhamo Dhondrub, to a peasant family in Takster, a small village in northeast Tibet on July 6, 1935.
When he was two years old, in 1937, the Tibetan government appointed a mission to find a successor to the 13th Dalai Lama, who had died in 1933. The mission was led to the village by traditional signs and miracles. The boy was tested by the mission and successfully recognized objects that had belonged to his predecessor. A state oracle then confirmed that he was the reincarnation of previous Dalai Lamas.
He was installed on Feb. 22, 1940, taking the full name, Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. Regents ruled Tibet while the boy began his education and training as a monk.

Interview
Interviewer: Hana Gartner
From The National April 19, 2004

Since he arrived in Canada this weekend, people can't seem to get enough of the smiling monk with the rock star appeal, and it's no secret why. Behind that grin is one of the most influential voices in the world. The Dalai Lama is the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, a disciple of non-violence and a living icon. He spoke with the CBC's Hana Gartner.
Hana Gartner : He calls himself a simple Buddhist monk. And that's how he arrived in Vancouver. No fanfare, no official welcome. Just some faithful followers anxious to get a glimpse of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. He'll meet with government leaders who finally decided they would see him despite China's objections. When he's in the States, this Nobel Peace Prize winner gets the star treatment. Presidents and celebrities line up to get a private audience and a picture. Tibet's exiled spiritual and temporal leader has become an icon. His message of peace and happiness is more self-help than religion, and that is turning his books into bestsellers and turning him into a celebrity. Why is there this hunger for a spiritual hero?

China to be more democratic, says Dalai Lama
The long-awaited meeting In this story: Abortive uprising Now at loggerheads RELATED STORIES, SITES HONG KONG, China The Dalai Lama has told Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian that China would become more open and democratic. The Tibetan spiritual leader met Chen on Thursday and said that he "sees global change more openness, democracy and respect for human rights," his spokesman said. "China is a part of this world and cannot escape this global change," the Dalai Lama was quoted as saying. He said the plight of Tibet had worsened as Beijing toughened its rules. But he feels "optimistic in the long run", his spokesman Kelsang Gyaltsen said. "Sooner or later there will be changes in China." During the one-hour meeting, the Dalai Lama presented Chen with a hada, or traditional Tibetan white scarf. In return, Chen gave him a copy of his biography, "Taiwan's Son", and a wooden Buddhist statue.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet Since 1959 when the Communist Chinese invaded Tibet, forcing the Dalai Lama into exile, he has emerged as an international statesman for peace. His consistent refusal to adopt the use of violence in Tibet's struggle for freedom won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and the respect of the world community. The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist monk, scholar and the temporal and religious leader of the Tibetan people. He is recognized internationally as a champion of human rights, as an environmentalist, and as an advocate of compassion and personal responsibility. Inspired by visits of the Dalai Lama to New Zealand, this website was created and has been maintained as a source of information about this wonderful person. When he visited New Zealand for the first time in 1992, he inspired thousands of people by his steadfast grace and compassion. His words were an uplifting message proclaiming global harmony through individual action. His serene presence was a living testimony of peace even in the face of his exile and the agony of Tibet and its people under 44 years of ruthless domination by the communist Chinese government. He again visited New Zealand in September 1996. The visit was a wonderful success with over 30,000 people coming to five public talks in the main centres. The visit was organised by "The Trust for the Visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to New Zealand," a charitable trust set up to create the opportunity for New Zealanders to see and hear him. His Holiness left New Zealand for a two week visit to Australia. From 20th to 29th September in Sydney, he gave the special Buddhist teaching called the

An exclusive interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Minutes (that seem like centuries) later, we are led to an inner suite, a temporary abode of the Yeshe Norbu ('Wish fulfilling jewel') of Tibet. We await him with a mixture of awe and reverence compounded by the presence of his somber attendants. Nothing prepares us for the boisterous, maroon-robed monk who walks in, greeting everyone loudly and shaking hands warmly all around. We are finally face to face with the Presence ( Kundun in Tibetan).
The next hour is spent in communion with the man, his beliefs, his faith, and of course, his laughter. It seems that His Holiness has perfected the 'art of laughing', if one may call it that. He uses it to punctuate philosophical debate, at times to bridge the awkward silence as he thinks up a suitable reply to a question, but most of all, to convey his innate joie de vivre . It is infectious and we join in heartily each time his laughter booms out. We are fortunate to partake of the Dalai Lama's reservoir of loving-kindness, if only for a few fleeting moments.
