He was the 5th child out of nine, the eldest child being his sister Tsering Dolma, who was eighteen years older than the Dalai Lama. His oldest brother, Thupten Jigme Norbu has been recognized as the reincarnation of the high lama Takser Rinpoche . His older brothers are Gyalo Thondup and Lobsang Samten. He was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, at the hamlet of Taktser in north-eastern Tibet. At the age of two the child named Lhamo Dhondup was recognized as the incarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. Dalai Lama is a Mongolian title meaning "Ocean of Wisdom" and the Dalai Lamas are manifestations of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Chenrezig. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth to serve humanity. Education in Tibet His Holiness began his monastic education at the age of six. At 23 he sat for his final examination in the Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, during the annual Monlam (prayer) Festival in 1959. He passed with honours and was awarded the Lharampa degree, the highest level geshe degree (a doctorate of Buddhist philosophy).

China keeps up attacks on Dalai Lama
A buddhist nun called China's comments about the Dalai Lama as "an insult to Buddhism" In this story: 'Separating the motherland' 'Spiritual mission' RELATED STORIES By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China China has fired new verbal shots against the Dalai Lama renewing accusations that the exiled Tibetan leader was collaborating with pro-independence forces on Taiwan. A commentary by the official Xinhua news agency Sunday said the Dalai Lama's tour was "a political visit" driven by separatist motives he shares with officials in Taipei. The report came shortly before the Dalai Lama appeared alongside Taiwan Vice President Annette Lu at a gathering in Taipei where they issued a joint call for peace and understanding from Beijing. Vice President Lu, whom China has branded "scum of the nation" for describing Taiwan and China as "close neighbors but distant relatives," thanked the exiled spiritual leader for braving China's disapproval and showing concern for Taiwan.

Dalai Lama, quoted in Asiaweek, May 1996 (CNN) During a visit with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India , photographer David Turnley filmed an exchange between the Tibetan Buddhist leader and a nun that appears in the CNN production, "The Dalai Lama: At Home in Exile." The nun, wearing the crimson robe emblematic of Tibetan Buddhists, is very old and very feeble and is assisted to the low platform where the Dalai Lama is sitting cross-legged. Kneeling, head bent, she holds out prayer beads for him to bless. The Dalai Lama blows on the beads, then pinches her lightly on the cheek and teases her about gaining weight. The nun leans closer and their heads touch. The Dalai Lama takes her hand in his.

Dalai Lama plays down Taiwan visit, says spiritual
The Dalai Lama has tried to open talks with China on the future of Tibet DHARMSHALA, India Tibet's exiled spritual leader, the Dalai Lama has said he will be going to Taiwan on a 10-day visit for spiritual reasons. He made the announcement about the purpose of his trip in an apparent move to smooth Chinese concerns over the trip to a region that Beijing considers a rebel province. China had criticised the Tibetan spiritual leader for visiting the island in 1997, accusing him of promoting separatism there. The Dalai Lama said China had no cause to be concerned about his 10-day visit, which is due to begin on Friday. "My main goal is to meet the Buddhist community there and explain about Tibetan Buddhism," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate told reporters in the Himalayan foothills town of Dharamshala, the seat of his government-in-exile. Taiwan's state-run Central News Agency said earlier this month that the Dalai Lama was slated to meet Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian and former president Lee Teng-hui.

The Private Dalai Lama
Away from the public glare, Tibet's spiritual leader and guardian, the former Boy King,
talks candidly and entertainingly about his long life in exile
By Ron Gluckman / Dharamsala T HE MORNING TV NEWS provides an alarming wake-up call. Chinese missiles are hurtling across the Taiwan Strait. Ships are being rocketed. One mistake, and it looks like it might be war. "We must understand China," my companion says calmly. "It is very concerned about stability. Stability must come from inner-satisfaction. But, at the moment, China's method is to use force. Sooner or later, though, it will have to find another way to solve these problems towards Taiwan, towards Hong Kong or towards Tibet." There is no resentment, no anger in the voice of the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Still, the 60-year-old god king who fled Tibet on the back of a yak nearly four decades ago seems noticeably troubled by the TV news, beamed in by satellite to his home-in-exile, in Dharamsala, high in the mountains of India. His signature smile leaves his face as he takes off his glasses and rubs his dark brow.
