Tibet and
His Holiness the Dalai Lama Because of its isolation Tibet has long been known as the Forbidden Land. Lying to the north of the Indian sub-continent it is the size of western Europe, but with only a population of some four million Tibetans. At an average altitude of some 12,000 ft above sea level it is enclosed on three sides by mountain ranges, containing the world's highest peaks; to the north the Kuen Lun range, to the west the Karakoram and to the south the 1,500 mile barrier of the Himalaya. To the east an equally formidable barrier is presented by the gorge country where three of Asia's great rivers, the Salween, Mekong and Yangtse flow from north to south. Tibet is the source of the other rivers of Asia - the Indus, Sutlej, Ganges and Brahmaputra. The Tibetans are a distinctive and separate race and not Chinese. Their language bears no relation to those of India or China, although the Tibetan script has its origins in India. They are a kind, honest, open and cheerful people who are at the same time hardy, tough, self-reliant and fiercely independent so typical of mountain people. The dominant aspect of all Tibetans is their devotion to their Buddhist religion which pervades their every thought and action. It manifests itself particularly in their reverence and deep affection for His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

Dalai Lama calls for U.S. help
The Dalai Lama speaking in the U.S. Capitol Tuesday. Story Tools WASHINGTON Continuing a 16-day visit to the United States, the Dalai Lama has called on U.S. lawmakers to continue supporting the cause of human rights in Tibet. In a speech Tuesday to members of the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill he urged supporters to "continue to help us in whatever way ... to end this serious violation." The Dalai Lama was invited to speak in the Capitol's Statuary Hall by Rep. Tom Lantos, co-founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, who called the spiritual leader "the embodiment of human rights on this planet." Earlier, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader held talks with Secretary of State Colin Powell. Their meeting at the State Department was, he said, "like a reunion," adding that Powell had been "very sympathetic." On Wednesday the Dalai Lama is expected to hold talks with President George W. Bush, despite efforts from China to block any such meeting.
'Political plotter'
Ahead of his visit the Chinese Foreign Ministry called on the United States not to allow the Dalai Lama "to engage in activities to split China."

Thousands gather to hear Dalai Lama
The 14th Dalai Lama speaks to a capacity crowd in the first public address of his Australian tour MELBOURNE, Australia (CNN) The Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, has begun his 10-day tour of Australia, greeting some 20,000 supporters in Melbourne. Thousands packed a Melbourne sports stadium Sunday to hear the Buddhist spiritual leader speak on finding happiness in a materialistic world while thousands more stood outside in the rain to listen to his first public address. The Dalai Lama, who was greeted with a standing ovation, said most of the problems in the world today stem from a lack of knowledge and too much expectation. "I always believe the basic purpose of our life is (a) happy life, happiness, joyfulness," he said. "Many problems occur because of a lack of knowledge and reality, too much expectation." MEDITATION BY HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA
For those of you who wear eye glasses, have you noticed that when you take off your glasses, because of the unclarity there is less danger from the generation of excitement and more danger of laxity? Do you find that there is a difference between facing and not facing the wall? When you face the wall, you may find that there is less danger of excitement of scattering. These kinds of things can be determined through your own experience.

About the Dalai Lama
A world-renowned spiritual leader, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, describes himself as a "simple Buddhist monk". In his lectures and tours around the world, his compassionate nature visibly touches everyone who meets him. He has traveled to more than 52 countries and met with presidents, prime ministers and crowned rulers of major nations. He has held dialogues with the heads of different religions and many well-known scientists. He has authored over 50 books and received over 57 honorary doctorates, awards and prizes, including in 1989, the Nobel Peace Prize. His Holiness was born on July 6, 1935 to a farming family in the hamlet of Takster in north-eastern Tibet. At the age of two he was recognized as the incarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, and was designated as the new spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. His monastic education began at the age of six, and at 23 he was awarded the Lharampa degree (the highest level geshe degree, or doctorate of Buddhist philosophy). With China's occupation of Tibet in 1959, His Holiness fled to northern India, where he established a Tibetan Government-in-Exile, shepherding the exile Tibetan community towards a modern democracy.

  • The Dalai Lama China hates him, the West wants to hug him. The spiritual leader of Tibet isn't just the bodhisattva of compassion he's one heck of a marketer. By Chris Colin One story has Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama, asking for pockets to be sewn into his robe. He was a child at the time, and his tutors were shocked. They tried to explain that his traditional garments weren't to be modified, that the previous 13 Dalai Lamas had made do without pockets. They might as well have been speaking French the boy wanted a way to carry things, and there was no arguing with him. Whether the story is true is not important. On this side of the Himalayas, it's the mythic version of the Dalai Lama that matters. On his great ascent to the Western pantheon of celebrity, the spiritual and political leader of Tibet has had to scrap a few personal quirks to transform himself into a more compact, digestible idea. It's a transformation familiar to anyone who has risen from the ranks of nuanced nobody to iconic somebody in America a formality. Some might balk at the distortions wrought by fame, yet they don't have a country to save. And who knows, renouncing one's former self is probably good exercise for a practicing Buddhist.

Today [July 6th] Tibetan Buddhists in many countries are celebrating the seventieth birthday of their spiritual leader, the fourteenth Dalai Lama. But in the Tibetan region of China, such celebrations are outlawed. Born in 1935, in the village of Taktser in northeastern Tibet, Lhamo Dhondrub was recognized at the age of two as the Dalai Lama. This Buddhist monk was forced into exile in 1959, when Chinese troops occupied Tibet. “Most of my life has been spent as a refugee,” says the Dalai Lama. “During this time,” he says, “the most difficult and saddest thing has been hearing endless stories about the suffering of our Tibetan people inside Tibet. . . imprisonment, death by hunger and so on – endless stories of suffering and torture.” An outspoken advocate of human rights, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1989. He said he accepted the award on behalf of the Tibetan people, who “confront a calculated and systematic strategy aimed at the destruction of their national and cultural identities.”
