Flanked by representatives of 25 religions Friday at the University of San Francisco, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said all faiths have the same basic aim to breed compassion among their followers. "I will continue to pursue my struggle, which is to campaign for peace," he told the crowd of about 1,000 faculty, students and members of San Francisco's Tibetan Buddhist community. Chinese official warns Australia over Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama will spend a week in Australia giving public addresses and spiritual teachings SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) A Chinese embassy official has warned Australia to handle any questions about Tibet "very carefully" during a week-long visit of Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, which begins Saturday. The Australian government has already confirmed federal cabinet members will not meet officially with the Dalai Lama and has blocked an invitation by Australia's Press Club for him to speak at Parliament House in Canberra. Chinese embassy spokesperson Feng Tie cautioned Australia against damaging bilateral relations with China. "We now have fairly good relations between China and Australia, but in bilateral relations some of the sensitive questions need to be handled very carefully," Feng told reporters. "Tibet is one of them, so we hope that Australia would handle the Tibetan questions very carefully, so as not to affect the good bearings of bilateral relations."

Tibetans consider Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama to be the living embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, and their spiritual and temporal leader. Throughout more than 40 years of exile, the Dalai Lama has worked to promote international awareness of Tibet and a non-violent means of regaining Tibet's freedom. In 1988, the Dalai Lama put forward the "Strasbourg Proposal" in which he called for genuine autonomy for Tibet rather than complete independence - a major concession. The Government-in-Exile has drafted a constitution for an autonomous and democratic Tibet and holds elections for the Tibetan Parliament.

Tibetan art of divination
By Dorjee Tseten Tibetan Bulletin
March - April 1995
Although means of telling the future were employed in Tibet, before the advent of Buddhism, they are not regarded as an alien remnant outside the Buddhist framework that it is occasionally convenient to call upon. Rather, they are used within the sphere of Buddhist concepts, functioning in accordance with Buddhist principles such as karma. There are no references to divination in the collections of sutras, but many can be found in the tantras. Purpose: By looking into someone's future, the diviner or medium can assess the particular situation and recommend how to respond or deal with it Remedial action, in the form of rituals, evokes positive forces and can result in a change in the person's fortune. Rituals will not change a person's karma, and those requesting and performing a divination are aware of this. However, they can induce latent positive potential to take precedence over that which is perceived as the cause of an impending misfortune. The efficacy of a ritual involves the patron making offerings of food and money to the monks or adepts performing it. The merit acquired from this gift is used to trigger the forces of latent positive potential in oneself or others. Thus, one is not transferring merit and stepping outside the laws of cause and effect, but merely using merit to awaken the forces of one's own or other's good karma.

China urges Dalai Lama to return
BEIJING, China (Reuters) Beijing has renewed its call for Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to shed his independence goals and return to China. A strongly worded magazine article called on the Dalai Lama, who ended on Saturday a hospital stay in India's financial capital of Bombay, to return to the "embrace of the motherland," the official news agency Xinhua said Sunday "The Central Government still waits for the 14th Dalai Lama to give up his independence demand and end his exile life and return home," Xinhua late on Saturday quoted the article in China's Tibet magazine as saying. The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, who lives in India, has called for international support for his non-violent campaign to gain Tibet independence from China, which annexed the Himalayan state in the 1950s. monk - no more, nor less.

His Holiness was born Lhamo Dhondrub on July 6, 1935 in Takster, Amdo, North-East Tibet to a peasant family. He was recognized at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. His enthronement as the 14th the Dalai Lama took place on February 22, 1940 in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva (Buddha) of Compassion, who chose to reincarnate to serve the people. Lhamo Dhondrub was, as Dalai Lama, renamed Tenzin Gyatso - or - Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Compassionate, Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom. Tibetans also refer to His Holiness as Yeshe Norbu, the Wishfulfilling Gem or simply "Kundun - The Presence." On November 17, 1950, 80,000 Chinese troops invaded Tibet. In 1954, the Dalai Lama went to Beijing for peace talks with Mao Tse-tung. His efforts to bring about a peaceful solution to Sino-Tibetan conflict were thwarted in Bejing. In 1959 the capital of Tibet, Lhasa was the scene of a huge demonstration calling for China's withdrawal from Tibet, and reaffirming Tibetan independence. The uprising was crushed by the Chinese army. The Dalai Lama escaped to India where he was given political asylum. Since 1960, the Dalai Lama has resided in Dharamsala, India, the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-exile.

Dissing the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama, who once said he would have been an engineer if he hadn’t become a monk, has been invited to speak at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, in November – to the distress of some society members who are boycotting the meeting.
Related stories
E-mail Print According to the society, the Dalai Lama was invited because of growing interest in the neuroscience of meditation, but critics say a religious leader has no place at a scientific conference. program, which will bring non-scientists to the annual meeting. Interest in meditation research has grown, following an article that appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last November. Advancements in brain imaging in the last decade have shown that connections among brain nerve cells can change throughout life. The study suggested that meditation, akin to sending your brain to the gym, can change the way the brain functions. In the study, Tibetan monks had more gamma wave activity, which is associated with perception and consciousness, than did novice meditators.
