Dalai Lama's Taiwan visit upsets China
The Dalai Lama has attempted to downplay the political significance of his Taiwan visit. In this story: Beijing warnings Religion first RELATED STORIES By staff and wire reports TAIPEI, Taiwan Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, will begin a visit to Taiwan on Saturday despite Chinese protests. In his second visit to Taiwan, the 14th Dalai Lama will meet President Chen Shui-bian and former president Lee Teng-hui, in a trip some politicians say is bound to strain the island's already tense dealings with mainland China. Beijing, which considers Taiwan and Tibet integral parts of China, has already warned of the visit's "serious consequences", accusing the Dalai Lama of colluding with Taiwanese separatists. The Dalai Lama has tried to play down the political significance of his visit, but Taipei-based Andrew Yang of the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies says the meeting of Taiwan pro-independence leaders "is bound to have some political implications".

Introducing The Dalai Lama
Tibetan supreme spiritual ruler of his country, in exile. Some six million Tibetans believe The Dalai Lama to be the reborn soul of Buddha of Compassion, the Protector of the Land of Snows, the Holder of the White Lotus, the Mighty of Speech, Tibet's Wish-Fulfilling Gem, and Kundun-the Presence. Born in a small village in Tibet to farmer parents, The Dalai Lama was the fifth of seven children. When the 13th Dalai Lama died in 1933, Tibetan elders searched through the nation's children to find him in this, his 14th incarnation. When the search party reached his parent's mud and stone house in Taktser in 1937, the toddler passed a series of tests: He named the monk leading the search, and he picked out several objects that had belonged to his predecessor. The young boy was proclaimed The Dalai Lama and installed on the Lion Throne in the thousand-room palace in Lhasa, Tibet's holy city. His parents were not only greatly honored but given property and gifts. A regent ruled Tibet until the boy was old enough to assume his destined role. Though The Dalai Lama was given a thorough spiritual education, he was nonetheless a kid, and played a kid's tricks and games, sometimes getting into trouble and scolded. He insists that he has no regrets about a lost childhood. "The important thing is that men should have a purpose in life," The Dalai Lama says. "It should be something useful, something good."

Dalai Lama meets Powell, China grumbles
The Dalai Lama says Powell showed "genuine human, warm feeling" during their brief encounter WASHINGTON Ignoring complaints from China, the Dalai Lama and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell have met to discuss promoting human and religious values, and to talk about conditions in Tibet. The Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan government in exile, plans to meet with President Bush Wednesday on the day Beijing marks the 50th anniversary of what it calls the "peaceful liberation" of Tibet. In apparent recognition of Chinese sensibilities on the issue, both the White House and the State Department stressed the Dalai Lama's role as a religious rather than a political leader. Meeting with reporters after his 45-minute stay at the State Department, the Buddhist leader said Powell showed "genuine human, warm feelings" during their brief encounter on Tuesday, as did Powell's predecessor, Madeleine Albright. He said Powell "listened very keenly" to the points he raised.

Clean bill of health for Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama first complained of acute abdominal pain in December MUMBAI, India Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama is said to be in an "absolutely normal" condition after being admitted to hospital for a bowel infection. "We undertook further medical examinations this morning like blood tests on a fasting stomach. He's absolutely normal," Prakash Mhatre, operations director at the Leelavati Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, told Reuters news agency. Though a statement from the Dalai Lama's office in New Delhi said the infection was under control, there was no indication when the 66-year-old would be discharged from hospital. "The panel of doctors who examined him have declared that the bowel infection is under control after he was being treated with antibiotics since yesterday [Sunday]," Mhatre said in the Reuters report. Australia snubs Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama will spend a week in Australia giving public addresses and spiritual teachings By Grant Holloway CNN SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) The Australian government is refusing to officially meet Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama during his week-long visit to the country which begins Saturday. The Dalai Lama, who is also a figurehead for Tibet's struggle for independence from China, will hold public meetings and addresses in four Australian cities before continuing on to neighboring New Zealand. Both Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer have declined opportunities to meet the religious leader, whereas New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has welcomed an invitation to do so. The Australian government also earlier blocked an invitation by Australia's Press Club for the Dalai Lama to speak in Parliament House in Canberra.

Welcome to Xizang-Zhiye 'Xizang-Zhiye' means 'Tibet Pages' in Mandarin Chinese. This site was created at the request of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as a way of communicating with Chinese people throughout the world. Xizang-Zhiye.org is a very important way for the Tibetan people to reach out to their Chinese brothers and sisters with information that, until now, was not available to the Chinese population at large. It is just one step in building a bridge based on honest communication. Because the primary audience for this website is the Chinese people, this site was built in traditional and simplified Chinese. In order to give the English-speaking audience a glimpse at the content of this site, we have provided a brief summary of each of the eight sections that comprise this site. ABOUT US
Dalai Lama His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso is the fourteenth and current Dalai Lama. As well as being the spiritual leader of the Tibet Buddhists, the Dalai Lama is also Tibet's Head of State and sole political ruler. He has lived in exile since China invaded Tibet in 1950. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Ultimately, humanity is one and this small planet is our only home. If we are to protect this home of ours, each of us needs to experience a vivid sense of universal altruism. It is only this feeling that can remove the self-centered motives that cause people to deceive and misuse one another. If we have, a sincere and open heart, we naturally feel self-worth and confidence, and there is no need to be fearful of others. The key to a happier world is the growth of compassion. We do not need to become religious, nor do we need to believe in an ideology. All that is necessary is for each of us to develop our good human qualities. I believe that to meet the challenge of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. We must all learn to work not just for our own self, family, or nation but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace, the equitable use of natural resources, and through concern for future generations, the proper care of the environment." Voices from the Heart by Eddie and Debbie Shapiro (editors).

Bush to meet with Dalai Lama
From Major Garrett CNN White House Correspondent WASHINGTON (CNN) U.S. President George W. Bush will meet the Dalai Lama Wednesday at the White House, a formal meeting that will occur on the 50th anniversary of China's military reoccupation of Tibet. White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said the meeting would be in the executive mansion and would include other senior administration officials. Former President Bill Clinton had several brief encounters with the Dalai Lama the most recent in June 2000 during visits to the White House, but avoided an Oval Office meeting that would have provided the trappings of a visit of a head of state trappings that would have irked Beijing. IN-DEPTH SPECIAL The Dalai Lama: A spiritual leader in exile Another administration official described the encounter with Bush as a "private meeting with a Nobel Prize winner and author." Beijing contends Tibet is part of China and considers high-level meetings between government officials and the Dalai Lama an intrusion into Chinese internal affairs. Tibetans argue that China has illegally occupied Tibet since using force in 1951 to suppress an independence movement begun in the Himalayan land in 1911.

Dalai Lama cancels engagements to rest
Doctors blamed the Dalai Lama's recent illness on exhaustion DHARAMSALA, India Tibet's exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has cancelled all appointments for three months to give him time to recover from his recent bowel infection, officials at his private office say. Samdhong Rinpoche, chief minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, based in the northern Indian hill-town of Dharamsala, said the Dalai Lama would extend a scheduled five-week retreat until the end of April. The Tibetan spiritual leader was discharged from hospital in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, earlier this month after receiving treatment for an infection that doctors said was caused by an amoeba. Samdhong said the illness was caused by exhaustion brought on by the Dalai Lama's hectic schedule.

So I was fascinated as he meditated and said his morning prayers, yawning occasionally, hiding nothing from the camera. At one point the filmmaker off-screen asked him what he was doing. He said, "Shaping motivation!" What? "Shaping my motivation for the day." Dalai Lama to U.S.: Use 'human wisdom'
The Dalai Lama believes the threat from terrorism can be resolved without violence (CNN) The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, leads a life of exile in India. Since fleeing his homeland 42 years ago, the Nobel Peace Laureate has preached non-violence in every conflict. In an exclusive interview with CNN's Rosemary Church, the Dalai Lama was asked about his response to the terrorist attacks in the U.S. CHURCH: Can we start with your reaction to those terror attacks on the United States. DALAI LAMA: Of course it is really shocking, very, very sad. I always consider all these destructive, awful sorts of actions are out of hatred. It is really very sad and very shocking. CHURCH: How do you think the United States should respond?
