Remission Of Crohn's
via Lifestyle Improvement
Synopsis: Crohn's Disease can be put into a controlled remission (if not cured) by a straightforward change in ones lifestyle, including diet. The regimen that I follow is based upon research by Elaine Gottschall, B.A., M.Sc. and is called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. And I'm not the only onethere are at least 1000 others using this diet in lieu of drugs to heal themselves. Read my story or read Gottschall's book, Breaking The Vicious Cycle This site is a dedication to the success one can obtain using the SCD to cure Crohn's. Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Options
The purpose of medical treatment is to control the episodes of inflammation and diarrhea that accompany flare-ups of ulcerative colitis (UC). Following inflammation and diarrhea treatment, long-term relapse prevention and modulation (controlling) efforts are generally begun.
Diarrhea Treatments
Specific medications are used just for diarrhea treatment. Anticholinergic drugs are commonly used in mild cases of diarrhea, one dose early in the day and after each episode during the day. Severe cases are treated with stronger medications. Side effects are an issue with all diarrhea treatment drugs, and some of them can cause more complicated ulcerative colitis conditions, such as toxic dilation of the colon.
Treatment for Inflammation
Inflammation is generally treated with anti-inflammatory medications, which are administered orally, intravenously, or, as an enema or suppository. Suppositories are a more preferred method of administration for proctitis (inflammation of the rectum alone). After inflammation subsides, anti-inflammatory use is tapered off. Another function of anti-inflammatory medication is pain control.

What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease in which the inner lining of the large intestine (colon or bowel) and rectum become inflamed. Inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower (sigmoid) intestine and spreads upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the lower section, the ileum. The inflammation causes diarrhea, or frequent emptying of the colon. As cells on the surface of the lining of the colon die and slough off, ulcers (open sores) form, causing pus, mucus, and bleeding. Although children and older people sometimes develop ulcerative colitis, it most often affects people ages 15 to 40. It affects males and females equally and appears to run in some families. Ulcerative colitis requires long-term medical care. There may be remissions periods when the symptoms go away that last for months or even years. However, usually symptoms eventually return.

Ulcerative Colitis: Inflammatory Bowel Disease
WHAT IS ULCERATIVE COLITIS AND INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a general term that covers two disorders: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. There is some evidence to suggest that they are part of a biologic continuum, but at this time they are considered to be distinct disorders with somewhat different treatment options. The basic distinctions are location and severity. It should be noted that as many as 10% of patients with IBD have findings and symptoms that match the criteria for both disorders, at least in the early stages (a situation called indeterminate colitis).
Crohn's disease, also called regional enteritis, is a chronic inflammation of the intestines which is usually confined to the terminal portion of the small intestine, the ileum. Ulcerative colitis is a similar inflammation of the colon, or large intestine. These and other IBDs (inflammatory bowel disease) have been linked with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Welcome to my Ulcerative Colitis and Ileostomy Website!
Introduction

Welcome! My name is Alicia and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in July of 2002 at age 25. I didn't have much success getting it under control, so I elected to have an open proctocolectomy in March 2003. While I suffered with UC, I often wondered if my life was over, but within 2 months of my operation, I was able to graduate from medical school, begin residency, travel, but most of all, enjoy life again. Though this is a challenge that I would not wish on anyone, I want to dedicate this site to the people dealing with this disease, and to offer hope during those times that I vividly remember going through myself.

What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis
is an chronic, inflammatory bowel disease best known for the damage it does to the colon. The colon (also called large intestine) is the last part of your bowel that functions in the storage of stool as well as water absorption. The scientific names you'll hear to describe the layers of the colon include mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and adventitia. The mucosa is the innermost part of the tube that stool actually comes in contact with as it passes throughout the colon. It is also the part of the colon that is affected with the ulcers characteristic of UC.
Some features of ulcerative colitis include:

Ulcerative Colitis
It's estimated by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCF) that half a million people in the United States suffer from ulcerative colitis. It's one of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The other is Crohn's disease. (Read about " Crohn's Disease ") Both cause inflammation to the large intestine. Crohn's also impacts other parts of the digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis however is limited to the lining of the large intestine. Ulcerative colitis is mainly a disease of the young, with most cases starting in people between the ages of 15 and 40 according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). It would appear to have a genetic connection. CCF says 20 percent of ulcerative colitis patients have a close relative with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's. The causes and symptoms There is no proven theory as to what exactly causes ulcerative colitis. One strong theory is a virus or bacteria that invades the lining of the colon. It results in inflammation and ulceration of that lining. It can be in a small, limited area or effect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis patients also have abnormalities of their immune systems (Read about " The Immune System "), according to NIDDK. It isn't known however if those abnormalities are the cause or the result of the disease.
