A patient who experienced ulcerative colitis, going from a permanent ileostomy to a BCIR (appliance free).

This page may not appear properly. Hello and welcome to Pam's home page. This is my first attempt at doing this, so I hope everyone is patient. Thanks in advance! I grew up in a very small town; Philippi West-by-gosh-Virginia Almost Heaven . I also use to spend a lot of time in Elkins , West Virgina, which is home of the Forest Festival. I am an avid Mickey Mouse fan and collector along with collecting angels, anything to do with the 'Iris' flower Coca-Cola.
The main reason for wanting to do this page is the fact that I have a permanent ileostomy, but I wear NO appliance! I suffered from Ulcerative Colitis for a very long time and was not able to be diagnosed until I needed emergency surgery. In July of 1996, I had to have a complete (non-reversible) permant ileostomy. A friend found an article about being able to live a life being appliance free. This lead me to further research on this surgery BCIR . Within three months I started experencing difficulties with my ileostomy. In July of 1997, I went to St. Petersburg, FL and had this wonderful surgery performed. I now live an appliance free life and am so thankful for the friends and family that stood behind me in this difficult time that I experienced. I would like to also thank Dr. Pollack and his wonderful staff in giving me back a life I thouht was never possible.

ISBN 0-668-04138-2 (Library Edition) Here is the inspiring, controversial, true story of a man who was treated medically for six years for a debilitating disease, ulcerative colitis , which under standard medical care by qualified and respected physicians progressed to a point close to death. In the course of his six-year ordeal, Dr. Goldstein changed from a happy, successful, and confident man with everything to live for to a wasted, drug infected, despairing man whose only hope, he was told, lay in agreeing to submit to one of the most radical and drastic operations known to medical sciencea total colectomy, or complete removal of the large intestine and rectum. For the rest of his life he would be forced to wear a bag attached to his abdomen for the collection and elimination of waste. At this point, tortured by the thought of becoming a physiologic cripple and even contemplating suicide, he was led to a natural way of life which incorporated fasting and a vegetarian diet that actually allowed his body to heal itself. Dr. Goldstein gives a detailed account of a six-week fast he undertook in a controlled environment and under the supervision of a doctorwhich literally saved his life. He also records the day by-day physical and mental changes, which occurred, and describes his new way of life based on the principles of natural diet.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic (ongoing) disease of the colon, or large intestine. The disease is marked by inflammation and ulceration of the colon mucosa, or innermost lining. Tiny open sores, or ulcers, form on the surface of the lining, where they bleed and produce pus and mucus. Because the inflammation makes the colon empty frequently, symptoms typically include diarrhea (sometimes bloody) and often crampy abdominal pain. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower colon, but it may also involve the entire colon. When ulcerative colitis affects only the lowest part of the colon the rectum it is called ulcerative proctitis. If the disease affects only the left side of the colon, it is called limited or distal colitis. If it involves the entire colon, it is termed pancolitis. Ulcerative colitis differs from another inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease. Crohn's can affect any area of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the small intestine and colon. Ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, affects only the colon. The inflammation involves the entire rectum and extends up the colon in a continuous manner. There are no areas of normal intestine between the areas of diseased intestine. In contrast, such so-called "skip" areas may occur in Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis affects only the innermost lining of the colon, whereas Crohn's disease can affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall.

Information About Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease of the large intestine (colon) characterized by inflammation of the lining of the intestinal tract and rectal bleeding. It, along with anther condition called Crohn's disease, falls into the category of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that comes in waves or "flare-ups." The most common symptoms of a flare-up are bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Excessive blood loss can lead to fatigue as a result of anemia.
Ulcerative colitis is NOT irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Cramping, gas, bloating, and changes in bowel regularity are common with irritable bowel syndrome.
Who is Affected?
Though ulcerative colitis can occur at any age in a person's life, the most common groups affected are the 15 to 30 and 50 to 70 year olds. Reasons for this are not known, and the etiology, or origin of the disease, is not clear. An estimated one million Americans suffer from IBD, split about equally between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's.
Possible Causes of UC
Suspected causes for this inflammatory bowel disease are:
Genetics
Diet
Infections
Immune deficiencies in the bowels.

  • diarrhea (sometimes bloody). No infective cause of diarrhea found. Inflammatory changes are most often confined to the left side and distal parts of the large intestine, however, any part of the colon can be affected. Inflammatory changes can expand over time and affect larger areas of the colon. Long periods of inflammaton lead to fibrotic changes and can cause colon de-haustration, which results in the characteristic narrowing of the bowel. Disease variable in severity from patient to patient and time to time. This makes long-term prognosis very difficult, since a specific patient may remain in clinical remission for years between exacerbations.
