Pre-Columbian Mexico
Hunter-Gatherer peoples are thought to have inhabited Mexico more than 20,000 years ago. Evidence shows the beginning of farming between 1500 and 900 BC. Between 900 and 300 BC, more complex cultures began to form. From AD 100 to 900 some matured into advanced Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya Olmec Toltec and Aztec cultures developed and flourished for centuries before first contact with Europeans. The Aztecs were the rulers of much of Mexico by about 1200, having brutally subjugated all of the other smaller regional tribes by the 1470s. The modern name "Mexico" comes from either an Aztec god named Mextli or a name for ruling group of the Aztec people, the "Meshika." edit

Hern¡n Cort©s Landing in Veracruz The native cultures were invaded and conquered by Spain starting in 1519. Francisco Hern¡ndez de C³rdoba explored the shores of South Mexico in , followed by Juan de Grijalva in . The most important of the early Conquistadores was Hern¡n Cort©s , who entered the country in from a native coastal town which he renamed "Puerto de la Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz" (today's Veracruz The Aztecs , the dominant power in the country, believed (according to ancient myths) that the Spanish conquerors were people sent by the gods, so they offered little resistance initially to the advances of the conquerors. Eventually they opposed the Spanish when it became evident that they were not gods. After several battles in which the Spanish forces were close to being defeated, the conquerors finally surrounded and laid siege to the inhabitants of

    Mexico: History of Struggle
The struggle of the masses in Mexico dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish forces invaded the Yucatan and Mexican coasts. Henadez de Corboda and Herman Cortes were the Spanish officers in charge of the expedition to conquer the vast Aztec and Mayon civilisations. In 1521, after two years of vicious fighting, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) fell to Cortes, and by 1525 Francisco Montejo had conquered the Mayon people. By 1540 most of northern Mexico was under Spanish rule. Years of oppression followed as the Spanish conquerors tried to pacify the indigenous population. For the next three hundred years Mexico was ruled as a Spanish colony. The native population revolted in 1541, but the uprising was crushed. The Spanish rulers proceeded to rob Mexico of all its natural resources, mainly silver, and created vast plantations for the export of wheat, sugar cane, etc. By the 17th century the economy of 'New Spain' collapsed. Disease and overwork cut the native population from 12 million in 1520 to one million by 1720, but it was not until the early l9th century that major threats to Spanish rule began.

It was led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest who issued 'Grito de Delores', calling for an end to Spanish rule, redistribution of land, and empowerment of the masses. Costilla and his followers were captured and executed. A following uprising by Jose Maria Moreles y Pavon in 1814 was also crushed, and the disintegrating independence movement turned to guerilla warfare.

    Modern Times
Mexico's History The Colonial Period The following 300 years mark the Colonial period, when the territories of New Spain were expanded under the control of local viceroys, named by the Spanish crown. The new territories extended through most of Central America and much of the south and west of what is now the United States. Apart from establishing military and economic control, the Spanish also embarked on converting the local population to the Roman Catholic religion.
Between 1521 and 1650 the Indian population was heavily reduced, largely as a result of fighting, diseases brought by the Spaniards against which they had no defences, and the destructive effects of colonisation on their way of life. The Spanish population grew during that time. By 1810, there were an estimated 6 million inhabitants in New Spain, of which 60,000 were Spanish born in Spain, 940,000 were Spanish born in the territories, 3.5 million were indigenous Mexicans and 1.5 million were Mestizos of mixed Spanish and Indian blood.

Tattersall THE ARCHDUKE FERDINAND MAXIMILIAN THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL In 1857 Francis Joseph appointed his brother to the post of governor-general in the Austrian held provinces of northern Italy, the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. The Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian took up his residence at Monza outside Milan with his new bride, the Princess Charlotte of Belgium. The Austrians were far from popular in northern Italy, but despite resistance from the military authorities, the vice-regal couple began slowly to win over many Italians. Ferdinand Maximilian's liberalism aroused less enthusiasm in Vienna, however, where he was increasingly seen as being in opposition to his imperial brother's government. With the approach of war in 1859 against France and the north Italian kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, Francis Joseph relieved his brother of his office and gave full power to the military. Both the archduke and his wife resented this dismissal. THE IMPERIO MEXICANO Ferdinand Max returned to his castle of Miramar, but events across the Atlantic would soon put an end to his political inactivity. An army of intervention consisting of Spanish, English and French troops had landed in Mexico to enforce payment of the huge foreign debts of the Mexican republic. The Spanish and English soon withdrew, but the French troops of Napoleon III remained to establish a conservative, pro-French regime. To achieve this they decided to re-establish a monarchy, and in October,1863, a Mexican delegation offered the crown to Ferdinand Max as a prince of the first European dynasty to have ruled Mexico centuries before.

    Government
Mexico is a federal republic with 31 states and one federal district. The bicameral National Congress is elected by universal adult suffrage. The 64 members of the Senate (two per state plus two for the federal district) serve for a term of six years. The 500-seat Chamber of Deputies consists of members elected for three years, 300 from single-member constituencies with the remaining 200 allocated to minority parties on the basis of proportional representation. The President, who appoints a cabinet, has executive power and serves a term congruent with that of the Senate. Each state has its own governor and elected Chamber of Deputies.
    Economy
The agricultural sector produces various staple crops, including sorghum, wheat, maize, rice, beans and potatoes largely for domestic consumption; while coffee, sugar cane, fruit and vegetables are grown for export. The contribution made by agriculture (including fishing, which is a major employer in coastal areas) has declined since the 1980s, it now employs about 20 per cent of the workforce and accounts for about 5 per cent of GDP.
