THE HISTORY TEXTBOOK PROJECT: Mexico
Mexican history books offer Mexican various views on relations with the US, but also a variety of conflicting versions of Mexican history. This Saturday, Mexican 15, Mexico will celebrate its independence day, when Hidalgo shouted his famous independence cry. Some years ago I was invited to the dinner the President of Mexico gives on September 15 in the presidential palace overlooking the city's main square. After dinner, at midnight, the President went onto the balcony, rang a bell, and shouted three times "Viva Mexico!". The crowd be, low roared. The problem is that Mexico does not have a liberator like Bolivar or San Martín. Mexico got its independence in an odd way. José María Morelos called a convention to discuss the future of Mexico. He too was captured and shot. In 1820 there was a revolt in Spain against Ferdinand, who was compelled to accept the liberal constitution of 1812. Conservative forces in Mexico opposed the constitution, and their hero Iturbide proclaimed Mexican independence. The Viceroy resigned and Mexican independence was recognized in 1821. Iturbide hoped to head the new nation and proclaimed himself Agustin I, Emperor of Mexico, but he was quickly forced to abdicate. Guadalupe Victoria became the first president of Mexico under the constitution of 1824. He was not very successful and Mexicans tend to forget him. Yet he was the first president of Mexico, and as such his is the only portrait to adorn the office of the President of Mexico. This is in sober contrast with the dazzling display in the great square outside of electric signs depicting Hiadlgo, Morelos and La Corregidora, a woman involved in a plot in Queretaro who is viewed as a forerunner of the independence movement.

Introduction Task Resources Process Evaluation Conclusion Introduction Bienvenidos! Welcome!
Cinco de Mayo or the Fifth of May commemorates the 1862 victory by Mexican forces, including ordinary citizens, over French soldiers. The battle known as La Batalla de Puebla or The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5th. It is a day marked by many Mexicans and those with Mexican ties as an important cultural event. Everyone likes a party or fiesta - so put on your party clothes and get ready to explore the roots of Hispanic culture by learning more about this day in the history of Mexico. Task The feature reporter for our town is on vacation. Our class has been called upon to be "cub" reporters to cover the May article on Cinco de Mayo. Mexico: From Empire to Revolution
Mexico: From Empire to Revolution - Photographs from the Getty Research Institute's collections exploring Mexican history and culture through images produced between 1857 and 1923.
This is a well done site. As an American, I must admit that my knowledge of Mexican history is limited. I know the basics but I just do not know a lot. I know much more about European history than I do of our neighbors in North America. I am sure I am not alone in this. This site has certainly helped me get a better picture of Mexican history.
From the site:
Mexico: From Empire to Revolution is a Web resource that draws upon the collection of the Getty Research Institute and extends the two-part exhibition held at the Institute between October 2000 and May 2001. Reproduced in the digital resource are cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, albums, postcards and other forms of photography. The Photographers represented are either Mexican or European or North American. The work of some thirty known photographers is shown, alongside that of many others who remain anonymous. Together they provide a chronicle of Mexico from approximately 1857 to 1923, a chronicle explored in the History and Chronology sections of the resource. The terrain across which this history played out may be explored in the Maps section. The

Contemporary Mexico emerges out of the legacy of the rise and fall of great Ancient American Civilizations, the European conquest of the New World, and the creation of a multiethnic society forged from the deep roots of its indigenous past and the violence of the Spanish conquest. Upon gaining Independence in 1821, Mexico inherited a colonial past of ethnic and economic inequality and a pattern of economic growth that had never been designed to benefit the average Mexican. Mexico was attacked by foreign powers either attempting re-colonize or dismember the country, and at the same time Mexico was wracked by internal civil war and popular upheaval from below. Yet Mexico managed to survive, and out of its struggles has produced some of the great artists, writers and popular leaders of the twentieth century.

Brief History of Juarez
Until the latter half of the 17th Century, no real permanent settlement was built in the area. During this time, the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo) was often a raging river. In fact, with no bridges to cross, travelers often were forced to wait on one side or the other for months for the waters to subside enough to allow crossing. In 1659, Fray Garcia de San Francisco y Zuniga began constuction of a mission church to serve the Mansos Indians. In 1668, the structure was completed, and the town that we now know as Juarez, with a population of more than a thousand people, began its slow development. This same church still stands today just a few blocks from the City Market in downtown Juarez. In 1680, the Pueblo Indians living in what is now Santa Fe, New Mexico revolted, sending 2,000 Spanish and Indian refugees south toward Paso del Norte. When they arrived in October 1680, they effectively doubled the population of the town. To accomodate the influx of people, three more towns were built along a twelve-mile stretch of the south side of the river. Paso del Norte grew slowly in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The area was mostly a stopover point for north-south and later east-west travelers.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEXICO
Mexico is a rich tapestry of ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, colonial cities, exquisite landscapes and traditions of dance, folk art and songs. It is a country steeped in history where the past meets the present and every place presents the drama of living archaeology. Long before the arrival of the first Europeans, the peoples of ancient Mexico developed complex civilizations with brilliant achievements in agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, hieroglyphic writing and military strategy. Over 115,000 registered archaeological sites document a fascinating Pre-Columbian past. The Olmec culture is thought by some to be the mother culture of Mesoamerican civilization. They lived around 1200 to 800 BC on the Gulf coast lowlands of southern Veracruz and Tabasco. They were accomplished stone sculptors who developed a system of numbers and a prototype for the Maya calendar. However, some archaeologists believe that Olmec sites may have been colonial outposts organized for trade between the coastal lowlands and the central highlands where newly discovered artifacts predate the Olmec period by as much as 400 years. El Castillo
Chichen Itza The Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula flourished from about 250 BC to 900 AD. They were great architects and builders whose cities boasted magnificent palaces, pyramidal temples and large, paved plazas that sometimes served as a catchment area for collecting water in underground tanks called

Mexican History
Historically, Mexico has much to offer the world. It was here that some of the greatest, most advanced indigenous civilizations such as the Aztecs and the Mayas, among many others, flourished. With the arrival of the Spanish, things changed drastically in this part of the world and history changed its course. Mexico saw two very different cultures intermingle and blend, first through colonial times and later when its inhabitants were finally ready to continue as a free state.

History: Mexico’s earliest known civilisation was the Olmec in the second century BC, which reached its peak in about 1200 BC. The Olmec (meaning ‘people from the rubber country’) were a Mayan culture advanced in religion, architecture and mathematical systems. By AD 500, two great cities had emerged, Teotihuacan (with a population of approximately 200,000) and Cholula, a religious centre near Puebla that survived until the Spanish Conquest in 1521. The height of Mayan civilisation was reached between AD 600-900. The Toltecs, whose capital was Tula, were the predominant civilisation of this time. Known for their fine architecture, elegant speech and intellectual pursuits, they were the ancestors of the famous Aztecs who were thriving at the time Columbus arrived in the New World in 1492. In 1519, a Spaniard named Hernan Cortés arrived from Cuba with a crew of 550 sailors and explorers and settled just north of today’s city of Veracruz. By this time, the Aztec Empire controlled vast territories from the Yucatán peninsula to the Pacific, with over 370 individual nations under their authority. Ruling from their capital city, Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs demanded heavy tribute from their subjects, which may have caused some to side with Cortés in his attack on the Aztecs.
