Pre-Columbian Mexico
Hunter-Gatherer peoples are thought to have inhabited Mexico more than 20,000 years ago. Evidence shows the beginning of farming between 1500 and 900 BC. Between 900 and 300 BC, more complex cultures began to form. From AD 100 to 900 some matured into advanced Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya Olmec Toltec and Aztec cultures developed and flourished for centuries before first contact with Europeans. The Aztecs were the rulers of much of Mexico by about 1200. The modern name "Mexico" comes from either an Aztec god named Mextli or a name for ruling group of the Aztec people, the "Meshika."
Spanish conquest
Hern¡n Cort©s Landing in Veracruz The native cultures were invaded and conquered by Spain starting in 1519. Francisco Hern¡ndez de C³rdoba explored the shores of South Mexico in , followed by Juan de Grijalva in . The most important of the early Conquistadores was Hern¡n Cort©s , who entered the country in from a native coastal town which he renamed "Puerto de la Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz" (today's Veracruz The Aztecs , the dominant power in the country, believed (according to ancient myths) that the Spanish conquerors were people sent by the gods, so they offered little resistance initially to the advances of the conquerors. Eventually they opposed the Spanish when it became evident that they were not gods. After several battles in which the Spanish forces were close to being defeated, the conquerors finally surrounded and laid siege to the inhabitants of

History of Mexico
Early People Endured Conquests
Mexico's history was born of numerous cultural, ethnic, and political contributions from several major indigenous civilizations. Also greatly influencing the early Mexican society were were the Spanish colonists and a significant African population which served colonial leaders as slaves. At least three great civilizations the Mayas, the Olmecs, and the Toltecs preceded the wealthy Aztec empire, conquered in 1519 by the Spanish under Hernando Cortes. This was the first stage in what would be lasting dominion of the Spanish on the history, government and culture of the newly forming country. Important Conquests Changed Early Mexican Society
The Spanish assault on the Aztec Empire in 1519 represented the second major stage of Spanish expansion in the Americas. The first stage had established permanent settlements in the Caribbean Sea, including the city of Santo Domingo (now the capital of the Dominican Republic) and outposts on the island of Cuba. These settlements made it possible for the Spaniards to probe the mainland of Mexico and Central America knowing that they could quickly return to their island outposts.
In 1518, Governor Velazquez sponsored another expedition, this time under the command of his nephew, Juan de Grijalva. The Spaniards returned to Champoton, where they avenged the defeat of the previous expedition, forcing the Maya to retreat inland after three days of fierce fighting. The expedition continued exploring the Gulf Coast, eventually encountering friendly Mayan-speaking peoples who told the Spaniards of a powerful empire to the west. Although the Spaniards did not realize it, they had reached the outer limits of the Aztec Empire.

    History
[edit this] [Upload image] Highly advanced cultures including those of the Olmecs Mayas Toltecs and Aztecs existed long before the Spanish conquest. Hernando Cortes conquered Mexico during the period 1519-21 and founded a Spanish colony that lasted nearly 300 years. Independence from Spain was proclaimed by Father Miguel Hidalgo on September 16 1810; this launched a war for independence. An 1821 treaty recognized Mexican independence from Spain and called for a constitutional monarchy. The planned monarchy failed; a republic was proclaimed in December 1822 and established in 1824. Prominent figures in Mexico's war for independence were Father Jose Maria Morelos; Gen. Augustin de Iturbide who defeated the Spaniards and ruled as Mexican emperor from 1822-23; and Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana who went on to control Mexican politics from 1833 to 1855. Santa Ana was Mexico's leader during the conflict with Texas which declared itself independent from Mexico in 1836 and during Mexico's war with the United States (1846-48). The presidential terms of Benito Juarez (1858-71) were interrupted by the Hapsburg monarchy's rule of Mexico (1864-67). Archduke Maximilian of Austria whom Napoleon III of France established as Emperor of Mexico was deposed by Juarez and executed in 1867. General Porfirio Diaz was president during most of the period between 1877 and 1911.

The Spanish Independence Post Revolution ... Links Pre-Hispanic History The first traces of human habitation in Mexico appeared 20,000 years ago with the first people hunting animals in the highland valleys. Agriculture began around 6500 BC in the Teohuacan valley with the growing of chile peppers and squash and progressed to a primitive form of corn between 5000 and 3500 BC. Mexico ’s first “civilization” appeared on the Gulf coast near what is now known as Veracruz . These were the Olmecs. Known for their giant stone sculptures of heads, they had two main centers: San Lorenzo , which flourished from about 1200 to 900 BC, and La Venta in Tabasco , which flourished until about 600 BC. By 300 BC village life based on agriculture and hunting was established throughout the southern half of Mexico Monte Alban was the center for the Zapotec people and had perhaps 10,000 inhabitants. It is suggested that this is where writing and the calendar were invented in

The revolution (1910-20) was a 10-year period of shifting allegiances between a spectrum of leaders, in which successive attempts to create stable governments were wrecked by new skirmishes. The basic ideological rift was between liberal reformers and more radical leaders, such as Emiliano Zapata, who were fighting for the transfer of hacienda land to the peasants. The 10 years of violent civil war cost an estimated 1.5 to two million lives - roughly one in eight Mexicans. After the revolution, political will was focused on rebuilding the national infrastructure. Precursors of today's Party of the Institutionalized Revolution (PRI) took power in 1934, introducing a program of reform and land redistribution. In the freest and fairest national election since the Mexican Revolution, National Action Party (PAN) presidential candidate and former Coca-Cola executive Vicente Fox beat Zedillo's hand-picked successor, PRI candidate Francisco Labastida. The July 2, 2000, elections ended the PRI's 71-year reign, but it remains the chief opposition party. President Fox has sought to emphasize Mexico's role as a world player, and has strongly supported the US since the events of 9/11/01; security has been tightened on the nothern border. Meanwhile, rumours of government corruption are once again on the increase, the activities of the country's notorious drug cartels continue to make headlines and the soaring crime rate is tainting Mexico's much-vaunted holiday image.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the historical development of libraries in Mexico, particularly the public libraries, which have so long suffered from inadequate funding and indifferent attitudes. In addition, the services offered by these institutions has been effected by the poor or substandard education of its librarians, the sometimes remote locations of some libraries, the quality of materials housed, and lack of access to the higher quality and current materials of the academic libraries. Highlighted also will be the goal of public libraries in Mexico, an evaluation of their patrons, and their future in the country. Bibliography Bixler, Paul. The Mexican Library .
