A Brief History of Mexico
The struggle of the masses in Mexico dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish forces invaded the Yucatan and Mexican coasts.
Henadez de Corboda and Herman Cortes were the Spanish officers in charge of the expedition to conquer the vast Aztec and Mayon civilisations. In 1521, after two years of vicious fighting, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) fell to Cortes, and by 1525 Francisco Montejo had conquered the Mayon people. By 1540 most of northern Mexico was under Spanish rule. Years of oppression followed as the Spanish conquerors tried to pacify the indigenous population. For the next three hundred years Mexico was ruled as a Spanish colony. The native population revolted in 1541, but the uprising was crushed. The Spanish rulers proceeded to rob Mexico of all its natural resources, mainly silver, and created vast plantations for the export of wheat, sugar cane, etc. By the 17th century the economy of 'New Spain' collapsed. Disease and overwork cut the native population from 12 million in 1520 to one million by 1720, but it was not until the early l9th century that major threats to Spanish rule began. The first revolt occurred in 1810. It was led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest who issued 'Grito de Delores', calling for an end to Spanish rule, redistribution of land, and empowerment of the masses. Costilla and his followers were captured and executed. A following uprising by Jose Maria Moreles y Pavon in 1814 was also crushed, and the disintegrating independence movement turned to guerilla warfare.

Borders Major Events
David Thelen
As you drive eastward on the main road from the rough Pacific coast of Mexico toward Tijuana, on the left side of the road a thick concrete barrier stretches for miles, rising so high that you can see the other side only when hills rise in the distance. All along this "fence," men are gathered in knots, many of them grilling chorizos, waiting for dark when they will try to scale the fence, evade detection and capture by border guards, and reach family and friends on the other side. Across the border, guards wait for what they see as an invasion, trying to police this boundary that seeks to divide life in the United States from life in Mexico, two countries with two flags and two histories. This struggle between individuals and nation-states enacted along the southern border of the United States dramatizes a growing challenge as national governments seem increasingly unsure how to engage the growing movement of people, to say nothing of their ideas, products, institutions, and cultures, across national borders. Behind impenetrable borders, nation-states such as the United States and Mexico, with their national cultures and institutions, present themselves as the main arenas for defining values and allocating resources. And yet people have increasingly challenged the faith that the border can keep people and nations apart. Over the past thirty years the number of United States residents of Mexican ancestry has jumped from 4.5 million to over 17 million.

Textbooks, Readers, and References
The History of Mexico , by Burton Kirkwood. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 2000. 245 pages. $35.00 hardback. Mexico already has several good surveys that are far superior to this textbook in almost every aspect although all have failed to grasp the extent of the momentous changes in Mexico of the last twenty years. The market leader is the seemingly ever ready and ever currentnow in its sixth editionOxford University Press entry, The Course of Mexican History The Forging of the Cosmic Race (1990) for the first, and MacLachlan and William Beezley's El Gran Pueblo (1999) for the second. Both reach a high level of scholarly synthesis and readability. If less is more, then Brian Hamnett's A Concise History of Mexico (1999) in the Cambridge Concise Histories series is a superb choice at 336 pages. And Oxford has just answered the Cambridge challenge with The Oxford History of Mexico (2000) edited by the above Meyer and Beezley. The most popular, although somewhat dated now, is Alan Riding's Distant Neighbors (1985); as a perceptive general introduction to Mexico, nothing seduces students and lay people more. Riding was the

THE HISTORY OF BAJA
The history of Baja is extremely interesting. As one of the last major countries on earth to be established, it is remarkable that so much of the history of this country is so recent. Before the Revolucion of 1810 Mexico was just a large territory, and did not even have a constitution. The culture of today's Mexico is also unique. Many different elements have converged on this special country to create a culture that is unique to the world. For more information visit the MEXICO CULTURE section of Mexico Expo. A good book to read to gain more depth on Mexican history and culture is James Michner's "Mexico". This wonderful book takes the reader into the many facets of past and present day Mexico in a way that is very interesting every step of the way. For additional information on the history and culture of Mexico drop by the Mexico Expo Market link on the left side of this page and check out some of the books on Mexico.

Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Western Hemisphere and is rich in natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas. Mexico’s efforts to develop and modernize its economy—one of the 15 largest in the world—have been slowed by the nation’s rugged terrain, limited farmland, a rapidly growing population, and a series of economic crises. The nation’s capital, Mexico City , is one of the largest cities in the world. In Latin America, only Brazil has a larger population than Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo honors the victory of a Mexican army over a French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, won the battle, even though the French force was better armed and much larger. Emperor Napoleon of France had sent troops to Mexico to conquer the country. The Mexicans won at Puebla, but the French later gained control of Mexico City. In 1866 and 1867, France withdrew its troops from Mexico because many Mexicans did not like the French being there. The United States didn't like the French there either. The French pulled out. Hot,humid and hospitable are the three main words that spring to mind to decribe this city and surrounding areas. The city holds a key point in Mexico's history and it's ultimate downfall.
Favourite spots: In Veracruz itself the highlight is is a visit to the fort of Castillo de San Juan Ulua located nearby. The historic naval museum is also worth visiting as well.
What's really great: The fort which is significant historically as this was the first Spanish stronghold on the Mexican mainland in their crusade to conqueur the various Indiginous people of the area, leading ultimately to the vanquishing of the Incas and Tenochtitlan in which is now Mexico City. The fort's walls appear to be made of a rock that contains various fossilised corals. These are scattered throughout the walls and are very interesting.
Accommodations: There are many cheap hotels clustered in around the main zocalo. We stayed at the Hotel Mexico which was adequate. If your budget stretches to include airconditioning make sure you spend it. It is incredibly humid here.

Orientations A Very Brief History of Mexico Table of Contents Appendices Appendix A-History of Mexico: A Brief Timeline Appendix B-President Fox's Initial Cabinet Introduction The histories of Texas and Mexico are intertwined, and in one way or another, this common past has created the two most important business partners of the hemisphere. Although this close relationship is full of opportunities, it is also full of challenges. New generations will have to address complex problems related to demography, environment, water availability, energy, transportation, food supply, justice, regional security, and communicable diseases of human, animals and plants, just to name a few. The realization of the potential of the region has created the need to prepare individuals on both sides of the border for the complexities of the Texas-Mexico relationship. Prosperity for the region can then be based on a framework where people perceive their differences as a blessing, not as a threat. To understand the complexity of the Texas-Mexico relationship and to take advantage of the sea of opportunities it offers; it is critical to gain a solid grasp of Mexico, its history, its geography and its people. This booklet is an attempt to address such a need in a very humble way. This material has been prepared to provide participants of the Faculty Abroad Seminar (FAS) and the Spring Leadership Seminar (SLS) a journey through the history that has shaped today's Mexico.

History
San Miguel de Allende, nestled in mountainous central region of Mexico, is part of the "Bajio" region of the state of Guanajuato. This "low" region in reality averages about 7000 feet, but is so called for being a relatively flat area ringed by mountains. San Miguel El Grande (as it was originally known) was founded by a Franciscan monk in 1542. It was an important stop over of the silver route from Zacatecas. When the Mexican War of Independence began in the nearby town of Dolores (now know as Dolores Hidalgo) on September 16th, 1810, in an act now celebrated as "El Grito", the rapidly growing revolutionary army came to San Miguel El Grande. Dolores Hidalgo is known as the "Cradle of National Independence" while San Miguel calls itself the "Forge of National Independence", for it was here that General Ignacio Allende joined the army as Padre Miguel Hidalgo's chief lieutenant and led the army to several victories. Allende was not able to enjoy a Mexico independent from Spanish oppression, however, as he was captured during battle and summarily executed. He is now a national hero, and the town renamed itself "San Miguel de Allende" in 1826 to honor his actions. As the mineral wealth waned, San Miguel was popular as both a quiet, beautiful place to live and an attraction for the wealthy for its natural hot springs. The world famous Mexican comic actor, Cantinflas frequented San Miguel in the 50's and 60's, bringing with him an entourage of filmstars, singers and hangers-on.

The V of Mexican History
Mexican history is shaped like a V: one arm stretches northwest to the United States, the other northeast to Europe. The V has several layers. The bottom point is pre-Colombian, revived in the celebrations this year of the 650th anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlan and in a more spectacular way in the celebration of the coming of Spring. The most publicized of the many celebrations is at Teotihuacan, where half a million people are expected, and at El Tajín, just south of Poza Rica (Veracruz), where the festivities (which allegedly began over a thousand years ago) will last five days and five nights. The event has become commercialized, with strobe lights and all the trimmings.
The second level in the colonial period. While much of northern Mexico is in the midst of a terrible drought, the peasants of Oaxaca are parading with banners of the Virgen de Guadalupe, asking God to stop the rains. Does Mexico have a master plan for irrigation?
The third level is the US and NAFTA. PAN presidential candidate Vicente Fox has just visited Washington, where he addressed the Center for Strategic and International Studies. His theme was that Mexico will develop a two-party system like that of the US. Sure enough, the audience wanted to know about the price of Mexican oil, a question he sidestepped. So much for interest in Mexico as Mexico.
