Mexico was the site of some of the earliest and most advanced civilizations in the western hemisphere. The first major Mesoamerican civilization was established by the Olmec, who flourished between about 1500 and 600 BC. During 1535 to 1821, known as the Spanish colonial period, military and exploratory expeditions eventually made present-day Texas, New Mexico and California part of New Spain. Mexico
Its history is written in the blood of conquest. Forged in the conflict between the Old and New Worlds, it is Mexico. From the glory of Incan and Mayan cultures to the chaotic heart of the modern capital, from Cortes’ arrival to Pancho Villa’s famous raid, Mexico travels across the country and through its past. It is a compelling chronicle of a land shaped by the rise and fall of empires, the exploits of men like Montezuma and Maximillian, and near-constant battles for freedom, sovereignty and independence. Mexico would be useful for classes on Mexican History, World History, Hispanic Culture, American History and Geography. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Mexico fulfills the following National Standards for World History for grades 5-12: Chronological thinking, historical comprehension, historical analysis and interpretation, historical research capabilities, historical issues-analysis and decision-making for Eras 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7,8 and 9. Part 1, God, Gold and Glory Before Cortes arrived in 1519, the land that would become Mexico had already seen some of the greatest leaders and warriors in human history. But in the collision between the Old and New Worlds, its future was forged. This episode presents the early history of Mexico up until the time of conquest by Cortes and Spain.

exico's historical attractions - from the ancient ruins of the Olmecs, Maya, and Aztec, to the train routes used by the brash and legendary Pancho Villa - rank second only to the beaches of Cancun - and Alcapulco as the prime reason people come. The reason for this is simple: the tale of Mexico's past, accompanied by an overwhelming amount of physical remains, is as romantic, blood-curling, dramatic, and complex as it gets.
Somewhere around 1000 BC, the first of Mexico's ancient civilizations, the Olmecs, established themselves in what are now the states of Veracruz and Tabasco. They worshipped a jaguar God, built cities, constructed massive stone head carvings, and spread throughout central and southern Mexico until their civilization mysteriously vanished around 400 BC. Though the Olmecs left behind relatively few artifacts, their influence on later cultures was profound. In their wake came the Teotihuacan, the Zapotecs and Mixtecs of Monte Alban, the Maya of Yucatan, the Toltecs, Aztecs, and dozens of smaller, citied groups. To balance the spiritual and earthly realms and appease their pantheons of gods, many of these civilizations practiced human sacrifice, a fact that often overshadows their great achievements in the realms of mathematics, astronomy, architecture, textile weaving, art, and pottery. The Maya, for example, were so advanced in mathematics and astronomy that their calendar was the world's most accurate until this century. They could also predict solar and lunar eclipses.

Description This course surveys the history of Mexico from the earliest human inhabitation to the present. It will present different interpretations of the major themes and developments in Mexican history. A goal is to understand Mexico from the perspective of the Mexicans rather than from the point of view of the United States. It is important to understand, however, that Mexico is not a singular homogenous entity; there are “many Mexicos.” In particular, this course will emphasize the creation of Mexican identities, the role which Indigenous peoples have played in that creation, and how that role has changed over time. How have Indians been turned into Mexicans, and how have Mexicans been turned in to Indians? people have visited this page.

Translated, the title means "Coconut Coin Banks of Mexico," and what is so fascinating about the intricate objects is that many were carved by prisoners at San Juan de Ulua, a notoriously brutal prison in Veracruz, Mexico. The prison was built in 1528 and for 300 years it was the most feared prison in Mexico. Dates and locations carved into the coin banks, which were made from coconut shells, prove their legitimacy, but how they were made remains unknown.
Stuhr views this explanation with some skepticism given her own experience with coconuts.
