    Summary
Genetic testing is already in widespread use and will continue to grow in many application areas in the next five years. The number of companies offering genetic testing services and/or commercial genetic testing products continues to grow around the world. There are at least 50 companies offering genetic testing services or commercial products for a genetic test in medical, GMO food safety, forensics, and paternity applications. In the area of medical genetics, tests and services can vary by disease. Under the category of "medical genetics" there is screening for genetic disease and susceptibility and the emerging fields of pharmacogenomics and OTC (or direct-to-consumer) tests in the areas of nutrition and alcoholism. Much of the growth in genetically modified organism (GMO) testing, forensic DNA testing, and paternity testing is due to new industry regulation and legal proceedings. Regulations, patents, costs, and ease of use of a technology are all forces that drive the development of genetic testing application markets.

Genetics, genomics and the patenting of DNA: Review of potential implications for health in developing countries (2005) This Report addresses the important ethical, legal, social and health issues raised by the patenting of DNA sequencesnot only for the industrialized world, but also for developing countries. It emphasizes that genomics has the potential to offer great benefit to public health on a global scale, notes the present ambiguity in international agreements on intellectual property rights on the legal status of genetic "inventions", and highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding the patenting of genetic sequences. Finally, acknowledging the present need for more empirical analysis of the scope and nature of the impact of current trends in patenting DNA, the report proposes areas of further exploration that could provide a foundation for the establishment of informed policies.

The philosophical and religious issues raised by human genome research. Some of the most difficult questions arising from human genome research are not those related to scientific, biomedical or legal issues. Rather, they are the questions raised by the social, cultural or religious implications of our newfound genetic knowledge and technology. Insights into our evolutionary history and the small variations within individual humans' genomes may affect concepts of race, ethnicity and even gender. Studies of how genes affect behavior take researchers into the arena of social science and psychology. And, in the light of genetic discoveries, new dimensions of religious or philosophical concepts about identity, responsibility and what it means to be human may become apparent. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) supports highly technical genetic research that is rapidly advancing our understanding of the human genome. This new information, although potentially beneficial to the health of Americans, can also be misused. NHGRI created the
