Genetic counselling
Genetic research enhances our understanding of how genes and environmental factors interact to influence the health of individuals and populations and in doing so, generates knowledge with the potential to improve individual and community health. Genetic research can reveal information about an individual's susceptibility to disease and hence about the individual's future health. Such information may be of interest and benefit to research participants, especially if preventive strategies exist.

44. NGB - The Nordic Gene Bank: A Plant Genetic Resources Centre
A plant genetic resources centre for Nordic agriculture and horticulture. Includes a database for searching for cultivars or accessions stored for specific taxa and a library containing information on the institutes publications.
http://www.ngb.se/
NGB is a joint Nordic institute reporting directly to the Nordic council of ministers. NGB has a staff of thirteen. Due to convenience in working procedures the mandate species is divided into six working groups corresponding to different crops.
NGB stores material of plants of interest for Nordic agriculture and horticulture. NGB takes responsibility both for storing material of, and information on, the species in question.
NGB maintains a database on the plant genetic resources conserved in the Nordic countries. The data includes information on the material in Nordic plant collections and an inventory of cultivars of Nordic origin.
The library at NGB contains information on the various printed publications from the institution. The summaries of some projects are available and all publications can be ordered from the institute.
The Nordic Gene Bank Supports Development of gene banks in the Baltic states and in the southern African region. The SADC Accession database is now available in a searchable format.

Genetic optimization. Application in TradeStation environment. GENETIC ALGORITHMS
It is the modeling of natural selection.
Some time ago people noticed that some processes in nature are very effectively arranged. Algorithms in question are based on natural selection in wild nature.
Genetic Algorithms are adaptive methods of extremum seeking. Recently they were frequently used for solving the optimization tasks. They are based on imitation of evolution in wild nature:
biological populations evolve during some time, obeying the natural selection law discovered by Charles Darvin and only fittest survive. Genetic algorithms imitate this process and they are able to solve real tasks if these ones are properly encoded.
Basic principles of GA’s were formulated by Holland (Holland, 1975) and described in many papers. In contrast to the natural evolution GA’s model only those processes in populations that are essential for the evolution. Which processes are essential for evolution and which are not is still an open question for the researchers.

Rapid developments in biotechnology, genetics and genomics pose a variety of environmental, ethical, political, and social questions. And because they open up tremendous new possibilities for biological warfare, these technological developments have grave implications for peace and security. Genetic engineering can contribute to offensive BW programs in a variety of ways. With genetic manipulation, classical biowarfare agents such as anthrax or plague may be made more efficient weapons. Briefing Paper - 9 October 2003
http://www.sunshine-project.org This briefing is extracted from: Emerging Technologies: Genetic Engineering and Biological Weapons , Sunshine Project Backgrounder #12, October 2003 (forthcoming)
    Recreating the Spanish flu?
Influenza as a bioweapon does not sound like a particularly grave threat. Annual outbreaks kill many people, particularly the elderly; but a case of the flu is generally percieved as an uncomfortable nuisance rather than a grave threat. But flu viruses can be devastating. In 1918 and 1919, the so-called "Spanish flu" killed an estimated 20-40 million people worldwide and, since then, the highly changeable flu virus has resurfaced in a variety of particularly virulent forms. The strain of influenza virus that caused the 1918 global epidemic ("pandemic") was exceptionally aggressive. It showed a high capacity to cause severe disease and a propensity to kill fit young adults rather than the elderly. The mortality rate among the infected was over 2.5%, as compared to less than 0.1% in other influenza epidemics (Taubenberger et al. 1997). This high mortality rate, especially amongst the younger, lowered the average life expectancy in the USA by almost 10 years (Tumpey et al. 2002). Creation of this particularly dangerous influenza strain, as it is currently pursued by a US research team, may thus pose a serious biowarfare threat.

Economic Information Bulletin No. 2 (EIB2) 47 pp, May 2005 Crop genetic resources are the basis of agricultural production. However, crop genetic resources are largely public goods, so private incentives for genetic resource conservation may fall short of achieving public objectives. Within the U.S. germplasm system, certain crop collections lack sufficient diversity to reduce vulnerability to pests and diseases. This report examines the role of genetic resources, genetic diversity, and efforts to value genetic resources. Keywords: agriculture, genetic resources, genetic diversity, agricultural production, genetic resource conservation, landrace, economics, germplasm, international treaty on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, genetic uniformity In this report ... A consultation is being conducted on proposed changes to Scottish law to bring it in line with England and Wales so that DNA can be collected and kept from every person arrested, irrespective of whether any charges are bought against them or they are later acquitted.
