The Frazer lecture
Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941) was a leading British anthropologist, folklorist and classical scholar. Born in Glasgow, he was educated at the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge. He was elected a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1879, and was made a professor of social anthropology at the University of Liverpool in 1907. He is best known for his work The Golden Bough (1890) which became an instant classic and is a study of ancient cults, rites, and myths and their parallels with early Christianity, expanded to 13 volumes in 1915. Frazer was knighted in 1914. He wrote many other works, including Totemism and Exogamy Man, God, and Immortality (1927), and Creation and Evolution in Primitive Cosmogonies In 1921 funds were collected for the endowment of a lectureship in anthropology and invested in order to produce an income of £37.10 per annum in addition to a small sum for administration. It was therefore possible to pay a sum of £30 to the lecturer and a further £8 to the Oxford University Press for them to publish the lecture. Although the funds for the lectureship have always been held in Cambridge it was at Oxford in 1922 that the first lecture, by E S Hartland was given. Thereafter it has rotated between the universities of Cambridge, Glasgow, Liverpool (where Frazer taught or was educated) and Oxford.

"Let a Person Walk Alone With Few Wishes, Committing No Wrong, Like an Elephant in the Forest" Elephant in Latin = "Huge Arch"
Latin and Greek origins are attributed to the word "elephant"
The scientific genus of the word elephant is "ELEPHAS"
Elophos
represents in the Greek language an antlered beast or stag
The word "elephant" roots in Latin is two words: ele meaning arch and phant meaning huge
"LOXODONTA", the genus name for African elephant , means losenge-shaped teeth applying to the chewing surface
As you might imagine, a lot of comments about the elephant concerns size. Also, the quote attributed to Buddha, concerning a person walking alone with few wishesindicates that the elephant is also wise. This virtue is given to the elephant in various sayings and phrases. Elephants are also credited with being a friend to man and being most virtuous.
ELEPHANT QUOTES
"The elephant is a friend to man More than the dog, it's constant. And now indeed our turn has come to be the Friend of the elephant." From the song, Friends of the Elephant, composed by Paul Hippeau, for the Society of the Friends of the Elephant at their 1906 banquet. "There is no creature among all the Beasts of the world which hath so great and ample demonstration of the power and wisdom of almighty God as the Elephant."
