Written and compiled by George Knowles.
Sir James George Frazer was a leading Anthropologist, Folklorist and Classical Scholar. A respected academic by his peers and colleagues, he devoted much of his life researching the early history of mankind; he studied, wrote and theorized on the early magical thinking into religious thought. His most famous book The Golden Bough: a Study in Magic and Religion , became an instant classic when first it was published in 1890. James George Frazer was a Scotsman, born in Brandon Place, Glasgow in 1854. He was the eldest of four children borne by his father Daniel Frazer and his mother Katherine Frazer, nee Bogle. Katherine’s grandfather was George Bogle who is reported to have been Warren Hasting’s envoy to Tibet in 1774. His father Daniel was a wealthy middle-class Pharmacist who lead the family as devout followers of the Free Church of Scotland into whose doctrines James would be raised. In the mid-1860s his father Daniel purchased a new property at Helensburgh on the Gareloch.

Magical thinking
[Categories: Magic]
Magical thinking is a term used by historians of religion to describe one kind of non-scientific causal reasoning. Scholars like (English social anthropologist noted for studies of primitive religion and magic (1854-1941)) James George Frazer and (Click link for more info and facts about Bronislaw K. Malinowski) Bronislaw K. Malinowski emphasized that (Any art that invokes supernatural powers) magic is more like (A particular branch of scientific knowledge) science than (A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny) religion , and that societies with magical beliefs often had separate religious beliefs and practices. Like science, magic is concerned with causal relations.
Overview
According to Frazer, magical thinking depends on two laws: the law of similarity (an effect resembles its cause), and the law of contagion (things which were once in physical contact maintain a connection even after physical contact has been broken). Others have described these two laws as examples of " (Click link for more info and facts about analogical) analogical reasoning" (rather than (The branch of philosophy that analyzes inference) logic al reasoning).

Preface With these and other instances of like customs before us it is no longer possible to regard the rule of succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia as exceptional; it clearly exemplifies a widespread institution, of which the most numerous and the most similar cases have thus far been found in Africa. How far the facts point to an early influence of Africa on Italy, or even to the existence of an African population in Southern Europe, I do not presume to say. The pre-historic historic relations between the two continents are still obscure and still under investigation. J. G. FRAZER 1 BRICK COURT,TEMPLE, LONDON,June 1922. Mine was the Reverend L.R. Phelps, a gentle man with a large white beard and bald. He looked like an evangelist. He asked me what I wanted to study. I didn't really know... first learn English, then criminal law, still believing that I would practice law when I returned to Canada. But he helped me understand that that was not my main interest. What was it then? "I wanted to know how Man was made ... created." He told me that I should study Anthropology; I would learn about everything I wanted to know about Man. I didn't know yet what it was. The diploma in Anthropology had been introduced, jointly by Oxford and Cambridge, only two years before, and there were just only two or three students registered for it. He told me to go see Professor Robert Ranulph Marett, at Exeter College, to whom he would delegate control as my tutor, since he was a sociologist and cultural anthropologist. I went to Exeter and, from the first moment there, I understood that this professor met my needs. Looking at me from head to foot, both of us standing up, he put his hand on my shoulder and told me that we were both from the same race, Normands or Northmen.
