In 1949 Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) made a big splash in the field of mythology with his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces . This book built on the pioneering work of German anthropologist Adolph Bastian (1826-1905), who first proposed the idea that myths from all over the world seem to be built from the same "elementary ideas." Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961) named these elementary ideas "archetypes," which he believed to be the building blocks not only of the unconscious mind, but of a collective unconscious . In other words, Jung believed that everyone in the world is born with the same basic subconscious model of what a "hero" is, or a "mentor" or a "quest," and that's why people who don't even speak the same language can enjoy the same stories. Jung developed his idea of archetypes mostly as a way of finding meaning within the dreams and visions of the mentally ill.
Campbell's contribution was to take this idea of archetypes and use it to map out the common underlying structure behind religion and myth. He proposed this idea in The Hero With a Thousand Faces , which provides examples from cultures throughout history and all over the world. Campbell eloquently argues that all stories are fundamentally the

This book is written in Korean only. About This Book
The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion is a broad comparative cultural study of mythology and religion by Scottish anthropologist Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941). Aimed at a broad literate audience raised on tales as told in Bulfinch's Age of Fable, Frazer's book joined the modernists in discussing religion dispassionately as a cultural phenomenon, rather than from within the field of theology itself. Though the final worth of its contribution to anthropology will be newly summed by each generation, its impact on contemporary European literature was unquestionably grand.
This seminal book attempts to define what almost all primitive religions share with each other?and with "modern" religions such as Christianity. Its thesis is that ancient religions were fertility cults that centred around the worship of, and periodic sacrifice of, a sacred king, the incarnation of a dying and reviving god, a solar deity who underwent a mystic marriage to a goddess of the earth, and who died at the harvest and who was reincarnated in the spring. It claimed that this legend was central to almost all of the world's mythologies. It was the scandal of the book from the first date of sale to the innocent public that Frazer included the Christian story of Jesus in his book, thus inviting an agnostic lese majeste against the Lamb of God. Frazer removed his analysis of the Crucifixion to a speculative appendix for the third edition, and it was entirely missing from the single-volume abridged edition.

Sir James George Frazer
Sir James George Frazer was a Social Anthropologist, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow and Cambridge University . He was elected as a Fellow of Trinity College in 1879, and remained until his unfortunate death in 1941. Sir James was made a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Liverpool in 1907, and continued teaching until 1922. Frazer's work covered a wide array of anthropological research. The study of myth and religion became his areas of expertise. He was the first to suggest a relation between myths and rituals. This gave myths legitimacy in the order of society. His theory was extended to explain the meaning of myths in literate societies like are own. The monumental work had a great impact on early 20th-century thought. The Golden Bough (1890), a study of ancient cults, rites, myths and their parallels with early Christianity, was his greatest work. It encompassed many of his other skills, including his eloquent writing style and supreme knowledge of his field. This book established Frazer as a preeminent scholar. He would expand it to 12 volumes in the next 25 years in a monumental exploration of the cults, legends, myths and rites of the world and their influence on the development of religion. However, the number of volumes has come under scrutiny depending upon the source. Some have the figure reaching as high as 15, but the general consensus is 12 volumes. In 1914, he was knighted for his work in the further advancement of his field.
