The blurb on the book jacket: Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941) was a Scottish anthropologist with a particular interest in the study of myth and religion. His early research in the development of religion, as humanity progressed from primitive to civilized social structures, ripened into a set of theories about the historical evolution of ancient cults, rites, rituals, and religious beliefs. The Golden Bough , is Frazer's greatest and best known work, a repository of his mature theories. In it, Frazer takes as his starting point an investigation into the succession rituals of the priest kings of Diana's Grove, a sacred wood in ancient Italy; the rite involved the ancient custom of allowing a runaway slave to fight the king and perhaps take his title if he could first pull down a bough from a special golden tree. Frazer saw a link between this story and Virgil's epic poem the Aeneid , wherein possession of a golden bough allows the hero Aeneas to enter the Underworld. Much of Frazer's book derives from this exploration of ancient tree worship, of the attempt of early peoples to control nature, and of the ritual killing of divine kings.

The blurb on the back of the book: James George Frazer The Golden Bough A new abridgement with an Introduction and Notes by Robert Frazer A classic study of the beliefs and institutions of mankind, and the process through magic and relogion to scientific thought, The Golden Bough has a unique status in modern anthropology and literature. First published in 1890, The Golden Bough was eventually issued in a twelve-volume edition (1906-15) which was abridged in 1922 by the author and his wife. That abridgement has never been reconsidered for a modern audience. In it some of the more controversial passages were dropped, including Frazer's daring speculations on the Crucifixion of Christ. This one-volume edition restores Frazer's bolder theories for the first time, setting them within the framework of a valuable introduction and notes. A seminal work of anthropology

    Encyclopedia: The White Goddess
Updated 12 days 13 hours 22 minutes ago. Other descriptions of The White Goddess The author and poet Robert Graves ' study of the nature of poetic myth-making, The White Goddess , first published in , and revised, amended and enlarged in , represents a tangential approach to the study of mythology from a decidedly idiosyncratic perspective. It proposed the existence of a European deity , the White Goddess of Birth, Love and Death, represented by the phases of the moon, who he argued lies behind the faces of the diverse goddesses of various European mythologies. In this work, Graves argued that "true poetry" or "pure poetry" has inextricable links with ancient cult-ritual of his proposed White Goddess and of her son. His conclusions were based upon his highly speculative conjectures about how religions formed, and there is no historical evidence that this White Goddess as he describes her was ever a feature of any actual belief system. 1948 is a leap year starting on Thursday (link will take you to calendar). ...

    Encyclopedia: Magical thinking
Updated 26 days 6 hours 59 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Magical thinking Magical thinking is a term used by historians of religion to describe one kind of non-scientific causal reasoning. Scholars like James George Frazer and Bronislaw K. Malinowski emphasized that magic is more like science than religion , and that societies with magical beliefs often had separate religious beliefs and practices. Like science, magic is concerned with causal relations, but unlike science, magic often mistakes correlation for causation. For example, someone may believe a shirt is lucky if he had won a bowling competition in it. He will continue to wear the shirt to bowling competitions, and though he continues to win some and lose some, he will chalk up every win to his lucky shirt. British anthropologist, historian of religion and classical scholar, whose best-known study THE GOLDEN BOUGH: A STUDY IN COMPARATIVE RELIGION traced the evolution of human behaviour, ancient and primitive myth, magic, religion, ritual, and taboo. The study appeared first in two volumes in 1890 and finally in 12 volumes in 1911-15. It was named after the golden bough in the sacred grove at Nemi, near Rome. Frazer did much to popularise anthropology and made its agnostic tendencies acceptable, although his conclusions are now outdated. James Frazer was born in Glasgow, Scotland, into a pious middle-class family, as the eldest of four children of Daniel K. Frazer, a pharmacist, and Katherine (Brown) Frazer. He was educated at Larchfield Academy, Helensburgh, and University of Glasgow and then at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became a classics fellow from 1871 until his death. Except for one year, 1907-08, spent at the University of Liverpool as professor of social anthropology, Frazer remained from 1908 most of his life in Cambridge.
