Published monthly by the Minnesota Medical Association
June 2000/Volume 83 Llama Lover Pathologist Jon Wogensen, M.D., is a llama farmer and aficionado. By Howard Bell Jon Wogensen, M.D., is an expert on llama spit—a green, sticky goo regurgitated from the llama’s first stomach (they have three). Llamas usually don’t spit on people, just other llamas—lucky for Wogen-sen. The 62-year-old pathologist and director of laboratories at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville raises these intriguing creatures with his wife, Betty, on their 10-acre farm near Prior Lake. Llamas are more than a hobby for Wogensen, who breeds and sells the animals to other breeders and to families. Llamas make great pets, says Wogensen. "They’re curious, gentle animals—one of the most intelligent animals on four legs." Wogensen’s agrarian roots extend to Litchfield, where he grew up and where his dad taught high school agriculture classes and ran a feed ’n seed store. Betty grew up on a farm in the Cotswold region of England. The couple got their first pair of llamas for pets in 1994, shortly after they moved from Albert Lea to a former horse farm in Burnsville. "I decided to start breeding llamas after I read up on them and got to know the llama community—a friendly bunch," Wogensen says. Today, the Wogensens operate one of 200 llama farms in Minnesota, about 50 of which are in the Twin Cities metro area. "I’m small potatoes compared to some that have 40 or 60 or even 130 llamas," he says.

Llamas and Other Exotic Animals
WHAT ARE LLAMAS?
Llamas are a South American beast of burden with a soft woolly fleece. They stand 1 to 1.2m at the back and 1.5 to 2m at the head, weigh 135 to 200kg and live 25 years. Llamas have a long graceful neck, erect ears, large doelike eyes and a keen sense of hearing and smell. The upper lip is cleft with only lower teeth in the front and upper and lower grinding molars in the back. Llamas can be white, black, beige, brown or any combination of these. Llamas are ruminants with three stomachs. They have padded feet with two toes covered by a hard nail. Other exotic animals include South American humpless camels, guanacos, alpacas and African pygmy goats.
WHERE ARE LLAMAS PRODUCED IN BC?
Llamas can be found throughout BC. They are mainly kept in the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland. Their ancestors are from the Andean highlands so llamas are well suited to colder climates and able to adapt to any climate or altitude. By evolving at higher altitudes llamas have a large lung capacity and an ability to use oxygen in the blood more efficiently than other animals.

Llama
Llamas are members of the camelid family. The camelids originated on the central plains of North America about 40 million years ago. From there, about three million years ago, llama-like animals dispersed to South America. By the end of the last ice-age (10,000-12,000 years ago) the camelids were extinct in North America. Llamas were domesticated from guanacos in the Andean Highlands of Peru 4,000-5,000 years ago, and are among the oldest domestic animals in the world. Primarily a beast of burden, they also provide native herdsmen with meat, fiber for clothing, hides for shelter and manure pellets for fuel. Frequently Asked Questions. What are they used for?
Are they intelligent?

Llamas are intelligent and easy to train. In just a few repetitions they will pick up and retain many behaviors such as accepting a halter, being led, loading in and out of a vehicle, pulling a cart or carrying a pack. Can you use their fiber?
Grease-free, light-weight llama hair is warm, luxurious and very popular with spinners, knitters, weavers and other craftspeople. Are the good pack animals?

Table of Contents PART 7 Extinct Llamas and Elephants - Village Pets According to conventional theory, the camel family appeared on the scene in Eocene times, and then underwent rapid changes. By Oligocene times (26-38 million years ago) the feet were two-toed, the other three toes having completely disappeared. Also in the camel family are the llamas which have two toes, but at a very early stage of their evolution they had five (Colbert, 1955, p.386).
The Tiahuanacan empire in Bolivia predates the Incas. About 1920 an archaeologist was digging in the ruins of two coastal sites which belonged to this empire. Here he came upon pottery jugs with representations of llamas. The llamas had five toes, which seemed most strange, since by no stretch of the imagination could the Tiahuanacan civilization be made out to be that old. According to theory man evolved many millions of years after the last five-toed llama lived. The mystery deepened when the same archaeologist discovered the skeletons of llamas at the sites, all with five toes (Honore, 1964, p.164-165). The mastodon elephant arrived in America during the Miocene epoch, according to the texts, multiplied astonishingly, and then became extinct. Assorted explanations have been offered, including the theory that early hunters wiped them all out. Various dates, for example, 4500 B.C., are given when the last elephant in America died. A far more recent date is suggested by the following. Near Concordia, Columbia, a complete skeleton of a mastodon was found in an artificial salt pond, which had been constructed by Indians. The pond, with its bottom of paved stones together with the animal, had been entombed by a sudden landslide (

http://www.ncllamas.com/uses.htm
USES AND DESCRIPTIONS
Some of the uses for Llamas include:
  • 4-H Projects - We sell Llamas to families whose children participate in 4-H. They use the Llamas as 4-H projects and show the animals in county and state fairs. We also have farm visits from 4-H groups who come see the Llamas as a group activity.
  • Archery - One of our largest groups of people interested in renting Llamas are archery and blackpowder hunters. The season is long and early in the year when the snow is not real deep which is well suited to Llama use. Some pack into remote locations to hunt and others just use them to pack out their game. Some people will call us only after they have harvested an animal and just use the Llamas for a day or two to pack it out. Rifle hunters also rent our Llamas but we don't have as much demand during the later seasons when there is deep snow and cold.
  • Backcountry - Of course the main use as pack animals is to access the backcountry. Llamas can allow access for elderly, or handicapped, or injured people who can't carry backpacks. People with younger children are also a large percentage of our customers because the children require them to bring more gear and the kids can't carry packs themselves yet. Also Llamas do very well in remote areas without trails. They can cross obstacles such as down timber, rocks, etc., very well.
  • Boy scouts - Groups of boy scouts visit our ranch and even rent Llamas for day hikes on local trails that are close by.

WILD NEIGHBORS: Armada Twp. tries to evict 19 llamas
Owners want land deemed a farm so they can keep pets
September 30, 2004 BY MARY OWEN
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER SUSAN TUSA/DFP
Raymond and Sarah Marah own 19 llamas, which are kept on land in Armada. If the Marahs' 5.9 acres are deemed a farm by Macomb County Circuit Chief Judge Peter Maceroni, they will be allowed to keep the llamas; if not, they must get rid of most of them. Heard the one about the 19 llamas? No joke. Nineteen llamas are living on 5.9 acres in Armada Township, and officials aren't laughing when they say that's a few llamas too many. The township alleges that llama owners Raymond Marah and Susan Marah are violating the township ordinance that limits the number of "horses, cows and similar animals" that a property owner can have. The township filed a lawsuit this summer in Macomb County Circuit Court against the llama owners to force them to remove their pets. But the Marahs' attorney, John Frazer, argues that llamas are not similar to horses and cows, and do not fall under the limits of the ordinance. Llamas, natives of South America, are related closely to the camel.

98. Llamas
Until now my experience with llamas was limited to two brief episodes. No wonder llamas are becoming such popular pets. Gerry Rising.
http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~insrisg/nature/nw00/llamas.html
Llamas (This column was first published in the March 13, 2000 Buffalo News Until now my experience with llamas was limited to two brief episodes. When I was in kindergarten, our teacher took us on a field trip to a Rochester park where they had a few grazing animals enclosed behind a high fence. The animals were quite tame and came up to us hoping for treats. One of my classmates for once I wasn't the bad kid reached through the fence to thump a llama on its side. The animal calmly turned its head and spit, covering my friend's face with thick drool. Then a few years ago, I was hiking the Finger Lakes Trail in Cattaraugus County when, stumbling down a steep hill, I came upon an open area where a half dozen llamas grazed quietly. For a moment I thought I had been transported to the Andes. But recently, for several months I have driven past a yard on Stahl Road where a number of llamas are penned. Finally last week I stopped to visit a fortunate decision because the family is moving to a farm in Eden within a few days. John and Patricia Sciolino are the proud owners of these handsome animals. One of them, a beautifully marked tan and white llama named Henry S. after Pat's grandfather, is a state and national grand champion.
