All About Llamas
What are Llamas, where do they come from?
Llamas, Guanacos, Alpacas and Vicunas (the lamoids) are a group of closely related members of the Camel Family, and are native to South America. Llamas are completely domesticated and are found primarily in the mountainous regions of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina. There are no "wild" Llamas - It is thought that they originated from Guanacos, and were bred by the Incas hundreds of years ago. Their popularity is growing in the U.S., and are valued as pack animals, herd guard animals, for their wool and fibers, and as companion and show animals. Due to their gentle nature, they are also used as therapy animals and for working with children. Their droppings make excellent garden fertilizer. In their native land, they also continue to be a source of food, hides, candle tallow, and fuel from their droppings.

Many alpacas and llamas can make wonderful pets! If you have fallen in love with an alpaca, but can't afford the investment costs related to breeding, showing, registration, and so on, then perhaps a pet-quality alpaca or a miniature llama is for you. In the alpaca world, pet alpacas are called "fiber animals, or companion animals."
Why Buy Pet Alpacas and Llamas?
Some people are eager to get started raising alpacas, but can only afford to purchase one breeding-quality animal. Unfortunately, one alpaca by itself will not thrive, and reputable breeders will not place an alpaca or llama alone by itself without at least one other camelid companion. In this case, a pet llama or alpaca can be included in a buyer's startup herd purchase at a very low cost. In addition, a pet alpaca or llama may be purchased for a wide variety of other reasons, such as:
  • To work with its fiber in spinning, knitting, weaving, and other craft projects.

Llamas and Alpacas
Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids. There are four different camelids. Three are in the genus Lama, the llama, the alpaca, and the guanaco. One is in its own genus vigunae, the vicuna. Llamas have a lifspan of 30 to 50 years. Weights range from 250 to 450 pounds. Height at the head, 5 to 6 1/2 feet. Color. Llamas come in a variety of colors. They can be various shades of brown, black, peach, white, grey, roan, paints, spotted and many other patterns. Coats: Llamas and alpacas have colorful light greaseless wool, which can be used for all types of projects. Shearing or brushing collects it. Camelid wool is different than sheep wool in a number of ways. Camels and camelids have two toed feet, with a toenail sticking out of the end of each toe. However, they walk on a kind of leathery pad, which gives them excellent traction. In addition, this characteristic means that llamas can "cruise" delicate woodlands with little or no damage to the environment.

They sell very quickly! We used have a 7 page site all about our llamas and English Springer Spaniels. But we are no longer raising llamas, so eventually this will be a full 5 page site devoted to our Springers. Please check back for the full site coming soon! ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS
We've purchased two new female springers, a black/white tri and a liver/white tri. In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy the photos of some of our past litters. We have purchased an adorable liver/white tri male that we named Sundown's Little Bit of Honey. We call him Snuffy, though. He's a wonderful dog, very smart and has a very sweet disposition, just what we want in a breeding male.

    Llamas as guardians
Although we have helped to successfully place a number of guard llamas, we do not raise or sell guard llamas ourselves. Ideal traits for a guard llama are counter to ideal companion, packing, and driving traits, and thus can't be effectively (or ethically!) combined into single individuals. Because our time is finite, we can't breed good guardian llamas in fact, we can't possibly maintain any other separate breeding herds in addition to the small breeding herd of high-caliber performance llamas that we already have. If you are interested in acquiring a guardian llama, please contact your local llama breeders (remember to be a smart consumer and get the guarantees you'll need). Also, Llama RescueNet sometimes receives llamas suitable for guarding, but be aware that most are taken quickly you need to fill out and send in an adoption application so that your name will be on file.

LLAMAS, CERRO DE PASCO, PERU
Cerro de Paso is built over a silver mine and there are hundreds of silver and copper mines in the mountains around it. It is sit- uated about 14,000 feet above the sea in the bleakest part of the Andes, back of Lima, near the central western part of Peru. The town lies in a basin surrounded by barren rocks. Cero de Pasco is thought to be the crater of an extinct volcano. Though the town is is surrounded by great mineral wealth, it is

http://www.rockisland.com/~castalia/cllama.html
Break Out of Frames Castalia was a nymph pursued by Apollo. She was turned into a spring (heavy magic) flowing into Delphi, at the base of Mount Parnassus. This spring was ever after the sacred place of Apollo and the Muses. Castalia is still a sacred place. In the early morning mist unicorns mingle with llamas, and when the moon is bright and full you can see them dancing with devas, sprites, fairies... A Much Needed 2005 Update Since I last updated this page, I sold my farm in the San Juan Islands, kept my llamas and moved to Wisconsin. One winter with a low of MINUS 60 degrees (with windchill) had me headed back to Western Washington as soon as the Spring thaw made it possible for the trailer to get in to get my llamas. It was WONDERFUL to see green growing things in Spring on our return. So as of September of 2004, Castalia Llamas is located between Sequim and Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula. And we love it here! It's very much like the San Juan Islands, only I can shop at all the large stores, and leave town via a road instead of a plane or ferry. Since we are in the "Banana Belt" here, just like the islands, the weather is almost identical. Plus there are a herd of elk here that are protected and fit with special collars so they can activate stop lights and cross the road safely. I think that's just the coolest idea. The rest of the info on this page is accurate. I no longer breed llamas, it's just my oldies and I growing older together. If you are interested in owning llamas, or just want to learn more, lower on this page is info on the LLAMAS Email Discussion List. Join us there and we'll try to answer your questions. I just don't have time to answer individual emails with llama questions, but with over 200 members on the list, there's always someone willing and able to help.
