28. Expert: Lovable Llamas, Adorable Alpacas Make Great Pets
Expert Lovable llamas, Adorable Alpacas Make Great pets llamas and alpacascan make great pets on small acreage, says Dr. James Jensen, large animal
http://www.tamu.edu/univrel/aggiedaily/news/stories/04/062404-4.html
Expert: Lovable Llamas, Adorable Alpacas Make Great Pets
June 24, 2004 - Thinking of owning livestock that doubles as a pet? A camelid species may be just what you need.
Both llamas and alpacas are enjoyable because of their quiet temperaments, curiosity and inquisitive nature. In addition, they are well adapted to withstand very cold weather, but they are less tolerant of heat.
Size is the most distinguishing feature between llamas and alpacas. The average female llama weighs 275-300 pounds, and a male weighs 325-375 pounds. Alpaca females usually weigh 110-140 pounds, and males weigh 125-160 pounds.
Some breeders have tried to create smaller sized llamas, but Jensen discourages this and suggests, "If a person wants a small llama, he or she needs to get an alpaca because of its smaller size, rather than try to miniaturize an existing species. We are just emerging from genetic abnormalities through better breeding. This has resulted in sounder legs and a healthier body appearance. We do not want to see the industry regress when it comes to inbreeding and trying to miniaturize a creature."
Another major difference between llamas and alpacas is their fiber. Because these camelid species were bred for different reasons, their hair coats are different.

pets

Yes, providing you have sufficient grazing for them. T hey are gentle, fascinating, fun and undemanding "field pets". Whether for walking, packing, carting or " just to graze and grace your land " The Times our leading UK national newspaper) described RoseLand Llamas as " Outstanding in their field " Naturally house-trained, llamas can even be allowed to make brief house visits!
What do llamas eat
Grass principally, supplemented by hay if needed. A coarse mix such as for ponies or goats can be given as a treat and supplement They also enjoy vegetables and can be given your carrot and apple peel, cabbage leaves etc.
How are llamas with children
Llamas get on well with people generally and appear to have a particularly good rapport with the young and the elderly.

30. Cabernet Creek Farms
Breeding llamas that are structurally sound with great temperaments. Guard animals, 4H projects and pets. Mount Hood, Oregon.

Site Map
Welcome to Cabernet Creek Farms home of "vintage quality" llamas. A small, select operation, Cabernet Creek specializes in producing llamas with superb dispositions and great conformation. Cabernet Creek Llamas can be found nestled in the shadow of magnificent Mt. Hood. Whether for fiber, packing, guardians, or just as a companion, our llamas are bred to be structurally correct, reproductively sound, and of excellent disposition. By utilizing the best of both the North and South American bloodlines, we are able to produce outstanding out-crosses and maximize hybrid vigor. All crias are desensitized according to the Mallon Method at birth and weaned at between 5-6 months of age. Our studs are carefully selected and then paired with appropriate females to optimize the best features of both parents. All llamas are sold with full reproductive guarantees unless otherwise specified, with only our most outstanding males sold as future herdsires. Rigorous health programs, which include worming, vaccinations, and vitamin supplements, are implemented year-round. Having ample acreage allows for optimum physical and emotional development of the young llamas. Having a somewhat small herd, we are able to carefully manage our breeding program. We have a very select group of llamas available for sale at any time, including:

Situated at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain in the Siskiyou mountains of southwestern Oregon, our herd is one of the largest in the Northwest. Using three sires with outstanding Chilean, Bolivian and domestic blood lines, our offspring continue to be a delight and win awards as well. We have sold and shipped animals across the United States and Canada. We are a "hands-on" operation without a ranch manager, so unfortunately you do not often see us at llama shows and sales. Our animals, however, have been well represented at llama events by our clients. We encourage you to visit our Awards page to see what our breeding program has done. Then please take a look at a few examples of our offspring Our animals have been sold at the Celebrity Llama Sale, but most sales are directly off the ranch. Please review our current

Mountain Ranch Llamas is nestled in the tall, cool Ponderosa pines of Northern Arizona. We're Frank and Janine Rotter , and our ranch is home to nearly 30 carefully chosen llamas and the youngsters they've blessed us with. We have purposely kept our herd rather small in order to concentrate on quality over quantity. We're excited about the crias we've been producing and look forward to you seeing them. Check our Learn more on our New Arrivals page for our 2003 crias! We purchased our first llamas in 1996 because we fell in love from the moment we laid our eyes on them. We were so impressed with their intellegence, overwhelming beauty and grace. Their inquisitive nature and gentle ways were irresistible. We had palomino-paint horses back then and it was hard to trust them with our small children, Christian and Karrina. We wanted animals that our kids could walk up to and not be frightened of, or be at risk of getting run over or kicked. Llamas were perfect! The children loved how they would "give kisses" and we were amazed by the gentleness and curiosity the llamas displayed toward the kids.

"Fiber" is another name for the llama’s fluffy, somewhat coarse hair. It is useful in making a variety of items ranging from clothing to backpacks. When worn as clothing, it is very warm. Although there is not a huge demand for it, fiber costs more than wool, due to its status as a luxury material. make excellent companions for camping and hiking trips, and individual owners as well as 4-H groups plan outings with their llamas. Llamas often make public appearances at places such as parades or schools where they delight observers.

"The view from our place" Let a llama from our breeding program add the following qualities to your herd:
  • Elegance
  • Willing dispositions
  • Outstanding Show Presence
  • Correct conformation
  • Fiber
What do you do with a llama? Packing Therapy Showing - spend time with other llama owners and enter your llama in obstacle, halter, and even costume classes.
"drive 'em!" FIBER! Llamas have wonderful fiber for knitting, weaving, felting. Take a class! FUN and GAMES - parades, picnics, parties! Companionship Guards - llamas have become increasingly popular as deterrents to predators
for those raising herds of sheep, goats, alpacas, even fowl. Generally, geldings were considered to be the best choice, but we believe that the natural nurturing, protective instincts of the females make them just as effective. It is a nice "job" for a female llama that can no longer be a breeder (due to low milk production, age, etc.)
