Quick Facts...
  • Guard dogs are an effective method to reduce predation on livestock. Guard llamas and donkeys also appear to reduce losses but appear less effective than guard dogs.
  • Guard dogs can be used in farm flock/pasture operations, on open range, and in feedlots. Llamas and donkeys are most effective in fenced pastures less than 300 acres.
  • Raise guard dogs with sheep and treat them as working dogs. Introduce llamas and donkeys to sheep in small pens.
Livestock Guard Dogs
Guard dogs can be used effectively to protect sheep from predation by coyotes ( Canis latrans ), dogs, black bears ( Ursus americanus ), and mountain lions ( Felis concolor ). They can be used to protect small or large flocks in fenced pastures, on open range and in feedlots.
Characteristics
Most guard dogs are large and imposing, weigh 75 to over 100 pounds and stand 25 inches or more at the shoulder. Most have long white hair, although some are brown or gray. Guard dogs do not herd or chase sheep. They work independently of a shepherd and can be left unattended with a flock. Their normal behavior is calm and placid; most spend much of their time dozing or walking with their flocks. However, all breeds are wary of intruders, and fierce and fearless when provoked.

104. Livestock Guardians
His temperament should be similar to that of a field pet llama but have extraqualities that make him a suitable flock guardian.
http://www.llamas.co.uk/Pages/livestockguards.htm

"A male gelding llama will guard livestock
sheep, goats, free-range poultry etc
by his own natural protective instinct..."
Two Iowa State University studies of 337 farms show llamas producing a stunning success rate as livestock protectors:
goat herds - 89% : poultry - 92% : sheep flocks - 93%
cattle herds - 100%
We supplied our first guard llama to a farmer in Kent who had been losing 35-40 lambs in previous lambing seasons.
Subsequently, w ith our guard llama in place he lost none
He liked his llama so much that he returned to us to buy a female for him (happily, he was not yet castrated). Then as a pair is likely to be less efficient than a single llama as a flock guardian, he returned to buy yet another (this time gelded) male to become his flock guardian! RoseLand Llamas
were featured on UK National Television,
both on Channel 5 News and on Channel 4's "Absolutely Animals", showing them at work guarding livestock.

Lovely llama Llamas are members of the South American Camelid family and are related to Camels. There are four different species of South American Camelids - the Llama, the Alpaca, the Guanaco and the Vicuna.
The Inca people of South America domesticated llamas over six thousand years ago. Llamas played an important part in Inca culture as pack animals in the Andes Mountains. Llamas also provided the Inca with fibre and meat, and their dung was burned as fuel.
Today Llamas are bred as pack animals, for fibre production, cart pulling, exhibition in shows and parades, and as guardians of other livestock such as sheep. They also make excellent pets.
Do they Spit?
Llamas will spit at other llamas in order to establish the pecking order within a group especially around meal time. Llamas do not spit at people unless they are being abused or feel threatened. Many llamas that spit at people do so because they have been raised by humans and are trying to establish a pecking order, not realizing that humans are a different species.
Are they intelligent?

How to Care for Llamas
Though llamas, native to the Andes of South America, have traditionally been used for pulling carts and guarding sheep, they can be great pets if cared for properly. Steps: Approach llamas with both hands behind your back. Let the llama come to you. Be aware that llamas will spit at you if intimidated or scared. Pet your llama on her back or neck slowly - these animals are head-shy. Keep llamas in a flock or with other flock animals, such as goats or sheep. Provide a large roaming area with a windbreak, such as a row of trees, along with a dust bath area with sandy soil for rolling; the llama will use it to keep her coat in good condition. Feed your llama high-quality hay, along with small amounts of commercial grain specific to your llama's age and activity level. Commercial llama diets are available. Avoid overfeeding. Obesity causes birthing and breeding difficulties.

When she has Sammy and Dudley by her side, her two lovely little llamas, you can bet she feel pretty darn good. "I spend an enormous amount of time with them. All summer long I'm by myself with them in the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness," the self-described "Llama Lady" said. "They're my buddies, my companions, my protectors. White-Crane, Sammy and Dudley also make others feel good and for that reason she was back in Steamboat this week with a film crew. She was being filmed for "Pet Story" - a new show on Animal Planet that explores owner-pet relationships. The catch is not that White-Crane has Sammy and Dudley, but what she does with them. White-Crane sings and tells stories about tolerance, getting along and respect, taking Sammy and Dudley with her in the summer.

June 10, 2003 — An unlikely lookout is standing guard over livestock across the United States. Farmers have discovered that South America's llama is a natural and effective "watchdog" to defend their animals from coyotes and other predators. Llamas instinctively guard against canine attacks, possibly because their natural herd instincts have wired them to chase off predators.

On the edges of a sheep farm, a coyote lurks, licking his chops. Suddenly, the sheep's guardian lets out a strange cry that sounds like a rusty hinge and charges the fence. What's this fleecy shepherd raising the alarm? A llama, better known as a pack animal and source of meat and wool in the Andes and plains of southern South America. "Any place where a coyote could come in, people are starting to use llamas," said William Franklin, professor emeritus at Iowa State University. This method of protecting sheep seems to have a wide appeal as a non-lethal way to ward off predators. "It makes the wildlife biologists happy because it's a balance of nature," he said. Franklin has surveyed ranchers using llamas to protect sheep, and found that llamas seem to be earning their keep. More than half of the llama owners he contacted reported 100 percent reduction in their predator losses after employing the animal as a guard.
