A Excerpt from National Geographic West Africa's Freedom City: Libreville, our home at the time, began as a settlement for freed slaves on the site of a naval fortress. How did it get its name? In 1849, our French ancestors captured a slave ship, releasing all of the passengers at the mouth of the Komo River. In joyous response and gratitude, the newly freed slaves named their settlement Libreville (Free Town). A lively and charming capital, Libreville reminds me of a quieter, more laid back 50s version of Miami Beach, with its large ocean-view hotels. To name a few, there's the Hotel Mont-Bouet, the Ebene, Rendema Meridien, Novotel's Rapontchombo, Hotel Okoume Palace Inter-Continental, Hotel Mont de Crystal and Hotel Gamba. Libreville's chalk white buildings contrast dramatically with the dappled green shades of the nearby equatorial forest. It's a city of modern office buildings, fancy shops, supermarkets and white, sandy beaches inside city limits. Not far away (140 km) on the south coast is Port -Gentil on Ile de Mandji, a coastal island to the south. Fueled by oil funds and relatively high wages, the town has dozens of restaurants, night clubs and unique shops.

Gabon Culture Gabonese are almost exclusively of Bantu descent but are subdivided into ten large ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Fang, who hail primarily from the north and north-east. The Mb©d© (which also includes the T©k© and the Mb©t©) are from the southeast, and the Eshira from the southwestern areas. Most of the coastal areas are the province of the My©n© people. On paper, somewhere between 65% and 75% of the population are true to the one holy apostolic church, but traditional religions and animism remain strong influences. Consequently Catholicism in Gabon is more a matter of regional sensibilities than papal bull. About 1% of the population are Muslim, an extraordinarily low number for an African country Although French is the official lingua franca, over half the population also speak the African language of Fang. You will also hear Bapunu spoken in the south, and Bandgabi in the east and south, around Franceville. Gabon is particularly noted for its woodcarvings and masks. The former gave visiting missionaries palpitations when they first set eyes on them, and the exquisite but sensual forms of the statues, with their emphasis on the fleshy tones of the human body, does suggest an earthiness at odds with Protestant and Catholic chastity. It's little wonder that they were banned as pagan idols by these buttoned-down proselytisers.

As was the case in the whole of Africa, a rich oral tradition dominated the cultural universe of Gabon until very recently. Written languages - and French in particular - were mainly used for missionary, colonial and economic purposes, and fostered the occupation of the country. It was therefore early American adventurers and missionaries (1842) and later the French, who produced the first texts about Gabon. belongs to the latter category with his publication in 1902 of a story entitled A Thousand Leagues Into the Unkown: From the Coast to the Banks of the Djah ]. Others in this category are Dr Albert Schweitzer and

However, it was only during the 1950s that original literature in French from Gabon flourished. The genre of poetry was the first to make its appearance with authors such as Ndouna Depenaud Wisi Magangue-Ma-Mbuju Georges Rawiri and others. In the 1960s
