abon, located in central Africa, is one of Africa’s most fascinating countries, rich in both wildlife and culture. Filled with tropical forests little touched by humans its newly created 13 National Parks create a safe haven for the incredibly varied bio diversity sanctuaries. Gabonese forests have some of the richest variety of plant species in Africa, including up to 20 percent indigenous species. Nowhere else can you watch elephants on white sand beaches and also hope to see breaching humpback whales from the same spot! Antelopes, buffaloes and elephants roam the grasslands. Gorillas, although endangered in most other parts of Africa, are abundant in Gabon’s dense forests. Trees are filled with monkeys, baboons, toucans and African parrots. From the strange mangroves of the coast to the spectacular savannas of the Bateke Plateaux, the wealth of natural scenery is also exceptional. Newly built small eco-lodges are now increasingly comfortable and make the country accessible.

Time to go:
The best time to visit Gabon is during the dry season (May to September). The rest of the year is extremely hot and humid with heavy rain all day and night.
  • The biggest celebration of the year is the three-day Independence Day celebration in August (Independence Day is August 16), with festivities more evident in the towns and villages than in the capital.

Introduction Through time it becomes difficult to separate our own beliefs about what happened in the past from the hopes and motivations of the people who actually lived through those times. Re-examining the past gives us a chance to learn from others’ lives and to reflect on our own values. On June 22 2002, the centennial anniversary of the day the African Village opened at the Pan-American Exposition , the Buffalo Museum of Science opened the exhibit, Through a Clouded Mirror: Africa at the Pan-American Exposition , curated by Kevin P. Smith. This temporary exhibit showcased objects from the collection including manuscripts, masks, instruments, jewelry and ceremonial clothing from the African Village at the Pan-Am. Through this website, visit the exhibit once again from the comfort of your home, school, or office. When the Pan Am closed in November 1901, the Buffalo Museum of Science acquired its collection of more than 500 African artifacts. This is the largest collection remaining from any of the African Villages that appeared in world's fairs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

You Are Here: Home Programs Africa at the Pan American Exposition Through a Clouded Mirror: Africa at the Pan American Exposition, Buffalo 1901 Portrayals of Africans at the Pan-Am in 1901 By its name and its structure the African Village reinforced Americans’ image that all Africans lived in village-level societies and shared a single basic way of life. “Darkest Africa’s” promoters claimed that 11 tribes were represented in the village and implied that it accurately reflected “real life in a real African village.” Although the fair’s commissioners desired accuracy, the image projected by the village suggested to the casual visitor a uniformity of African life, and one that lacked political complexity. The image of Africans sharing a single culture and living in isolated jungle villages radically simplified a complex cultural reality. It also avoided the difficult issues raised by contemporary colonial exploitation of the continent and romanticized the role of the white explorer in that process. “Darkest Africa: Real Life in a Real African Village” (1901)

GABON The Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) is an association of 29 governmental and secretariat or staff. Instead, it provides a service to donors and implementing agencies working in the region by operating as an information clearinghouse, a mechanism for promoting coordination of programs across multiple donors and implementing agencies, and a forum for dialogue. CBFP aims to increase awareness of the programs being funded and implemented by its member organizations, enhance the efficiency of these programs and relevant coordination processes, and identify and eliminate gaps and overlaps in programs and funding. In so doing, the Partnership hopes to encourage potential donors to engage in the Congo Basin region and the crucial work of protecting its globally important endowments of wildlife and biological diversity, ensuring good governance, and raising the living standards of its people. The Bushmeat Project has been established to develop and support community based partnerships that will hel p the people of various African countries, to develop alternatives to unsustainable bushmeat commerce. The programme is a long-term effort to provide economic and social incentive to people to protect great apes and other endangered wildlife. Some of the largest wildlife and animal welfare organizations in North America have joined them in agreement that the Bushmeat Crisis is a top priority concern and that it is time to act. A SELECTED LIST OF AFRICAN CULTURES We have adapted these entries from several sources, including the Art and Life in Africa website at the University of Iowa. Visit their African Peoples Database for more extensive information about these cultures and almost 100 others. AKAN: The Akan culture actually refers to several ethnic groups who speak similar languages, for example the Asante and the Fante peoples. The Akan live in southern Ghana and the Ivory Coast. There are about four million Akan-speaking people today. Much of our knowledge of ancient Akan culture is known from oral histories rather than written records. Trade routes to move gold throughout the region were probably established around the 13th century. This trade activity led to the rise of early Akan centralized states, and by the end of the 17th century the grand Asante kingdom emerged in the central forest region of Ghana. CAMEROON GRASSLANDS: The grasslands of central Cameroon is a large cultural area where several related cultures live in individual kingdoms. Some of these kingdoms are: the
