Current Exhibitions Where Gods and Mortals Meet: Continuity and Renewal in Urhobo Art
Where Gods and Mortals Meet: Continuity and Renewal in Urhobo Art is the first comprehensive presentation of the arts of the Urhobo peoples of Nigeria, whose experience in today's Africa is emblematic of a rapidly changing world. The exhibition is organized into sections that consider the forms and underlying aesthetic values of Urhobo society: personal images that offer protection and advancement; images of women at various stages of life; masquerade arts; and at the grandest level, communal shrine art, awesome in scale and form. Integral to the exhibition are works by contemporary Urhobo artist Bruce Onobrakpeya. Inspired by his traditional culture, his art offers a particularly poignant perspective on Urhobo traditional art.
The interplay of word, image and space creates visual poetry in these contemporary installations. The works employ text and graphic symbols to tell stories about memory, identity and the power of language. In doing so, they bring African visual histories into the global debate on conceptualism, which often melds word and image. In diverse ways, they celebrate the marriage of aesthetic form and literal meaning, play with the ambiguity of text and help us to consider the active role of the viewer in the "translation" process of "reading" visual images.
The Art of the Personal Object

permanent

Principally from eastern and southern Africa, the utilitarian objects on display in this exhibition include chairs, stools, headrests, snuff containers, pipes, cups, drinking horns, bowls, and baskets. Each object exemplifies the integration of aesthetics into daily life in Africa.

Biography Pierre AKENDENGUE
The Gabonese singer and musician Pierre Akendengu© does not fall neatly into any existing musical category - which is perhaps the reason why this talented recording artist has not always enjoyed the success he deserves. Akendengu© has, nevertheless, managed to make his mark on the international music scene with "Epuguzu", the definitive African song of the 80's, and the legendary "Lambarena", a highly innovative album on which Akendengu© audaciously fused Pygmy chants with Bach’s cantatas.
Pierre Akendengu©, who was born on 25 April 1943 in Aouta, Gabon, left his homeland at the age of 22 to continue his education in France, where he was also able to receive specialist treatment for his eye problems. Pierre settled in the town of Orl©ans, where he passed his ‘baccalaur©at’ and went on to take a university degree in psychology. (The talented student would not only obtain a degree, he would also complete his PhD in psychology in 1976). While studying for his degree Pierre would also pursue a musical career. In 1967, at the age of 24, he would enroll at the Petit Conservatoire run by the famous French singer Mireille. Pierre proved to be an exceptionally talented pupil. Indeed the young singer came third in "La fine fleur de la chanson", a well-known French song contest. During his time in Paris Pierre also met a well-known producer and musician, Pierre Barouh, who was to prove instrumental in getting the young singer’s career off the ground. It was Barouh who got Pierre Akendengu© into the studio in 1974 to record "Nandipo", the singer’s accomplished d©but album based on his childhood experiences in Africa.

Located alongside the city's main post office, the postage stamp center complements the national museum by offering visitors a pictorial overview of Gabonese history in miniature. Each one-inch canvas, framed by black felt and exhibited behind a thick plastic sheath, opens a window to local politics and global participation. Among the tributes to cultural achievements, medical advances, and international celebrities, one can survey here postage stamps documenting over 150 years of evangelization. Gabonese stamps of early missionaries, local churches, and indigenous arts do more than chronicle religious historythey illustrate Gabon's place within the Christian and "traditional" worlds. At home and abroad, affixed on a letter or in a collector's album, these postage stamps propagate an image of Gabon as an African nation where Christian themes find local expression.
