  • Usually, toasting simply involves lifting your glass, looking at the person you are toasting, drinking, and lifting the glass again in honour of him or her. It is important not to break eye contact during the toast. Even if you are not making a toast, lift your glass before you take your first sip of wine or beer, look around, drink, lift the glass again [to the entire table], and place it down. You may then drink your wine or beer as you would normally. Do not begin drinking until your host has proposed a toast to the entire company. If your host stands when proposing a toast, so should you. A common toast is "Skal!"
  • The male guest of honour should propose a toast to the hostess at the conclusion of the meal. A way of getting the others' attention is by lightly clinking your spoon on the side of your glass.

Denmark, pioneer in modern wind power technology
Denmark is the leading wind power nation in the world. The Danes were pioneers in developing commercial wind power during the 1970’s and today almost half of the wind turbines all over the world are produced by Danish manufacturers. The wind industry is a very important business in Denmark, with wind manufacturing activity bringing about 3 billion Euro into the Danish economy and employing 20,000 people. Wind power is also important in Denmark because it is a green, clean and renewable energy. Scandinavians are known for their advanced environmental policies, and wind power has given the Danes a way to reduce their dependency on polluting fuels: 20% of Denmark’s electricity consumption is covered by clean electricity produced at Danish wind farms. At times, wind power supply is able to cover the total electricity consumption of the whole west of Denmark.

Football is the most popular sport in Denmark and it's growing in popularity in Sweden. Jurgen Pedersen explains how these two small Nordic nations have managed to secure a place among the big names of international football
One hundred years of Scandinavian football
Do you play football in Scandinavia? I've been asked the question many times. Yes, generally speaking, it's true that the Nordic climate does not favour the practice of that sport. Think on the long, dark, cold Nordic winters. It's just simply too cold to play outside. The playing fields are completely frozen in winter, often covered by a thick layer of snow. Also, most parts of Scandinavia are scarsely populated and there may well be not enough people or just no-one around to play with! But it still would be wrong to think that everybody in Scandinavia is only playing ice hockey or going skiing. The fact is that football has actually a long tradition in Scandinavia, particularly in Denmark and in southern Sweden, where winters are relativery short and the land is more densely populated. The Dansk Boldspil-Union, (the Danish Football Association), founded in 1889, is one of the oldest in Europe. Denmark and Sweden were also two of the seven founding members nations of the FIFA (the international football federation) in the year 1904, exactly 100 years ago.

Safety Handbook HOME Adjustments and Culture Shock Important Links to Remember In this section, you will learn what culture shock means and how you can overcome its effects. Experiencing new cultures, and obtaining a better understanding of your own culture, can result in some of the most positive, life-altering experiences students have while studying abroad. When going abroad to Denmark, students will experience differences in manners, beliefs, customs, laws, language, art, religion, values, concept of self, family organization, social organization, government, behavior, etc. All of these elements combine to form Denmark's rich and unique culture. While the introduction to new and foreign cultures greatly benefits students, it can also be overwhelming. The new cultural elements a student encounters in Denmark may be so different that they seem "shocking" in comparison to cultural norms they are used to at home. As Bruce La Brack writes in his article "The Missing Linkage: The Process of Integrating Orientation and Reentry": "Just as you can't really describe the taste of a hot fudge sundae to someone who has never experienced one, it is difficult to actually convey just how disorienting entering another culture can be to a student without any cross-cultural experience."

    The NORDIC FAQ
These pages try to answer many questions foreigners to the Nordic countries could have. However, we have no intention what-so-ever to cover "all" questions. Basically, you here find topics which have been regular questions in the Usenet newsgroup S OC .C ULTURE .N ORDIC The contributions to these pages are made by the Usenet participants during the years, which make them less coherent than sites produced by a single person. The good thing is that different Nordic opinions often are represented.
    Soc.culture.nordic FAQ
The Frequently Answered Questions (FAQ) document from the Usenet newsgroup S OC .C ULTURE .N ORDIC is a very good source of information about the Nordic countries As it was made available to the Internet in 1994, and web-ified in 1996, it was perhaps the best one. Today there are governmental sites which without questions are better in the sense that they cover the topics more completely and evenly. (See below for links to these governmental sites.) The niche of this FAQ is such topics which are commonly misunderstood by foreigners, and those topics which are commonly disputed inbetween Nordic people, although the first requirement to include a topic here is that some kind of consensus is established among (a large majority of) the participants of the newsgroup. Accordingly Finland's Civil War (1918) and Continuation War (1941-1944) are topics not yet covered. Note that the S OC .C

    Denmark History and Culture
History Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.
