What does it mean to be Danish?
- A wise Danish man gave this answer in his youth: "To be Danish is not a question about national symbols. Nor is it a question about anything being established or institutionalized. It is, however, a question of being oneself; and being with myself I only am when rooted with my place and my history. Thus one's national feeling concerns the individual's relationship with himself or herself. An individual is not the first human being in the World. We do have a connection. A history. A point of origin..."
The following is an introduction to the Danish peculiarity - which some call "the very roots of the nation" - like all nations have their peculiarity. However, it is a

Japan-Denmark Relations
October 2004
History of the Bilateral Relationship
Japan and Denmark exchanged diplomatic missions on a reciprocal basis after conclusion of the "Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between Japan and Denmark" in 1867. Both countries have since then enjoyed a friendly relationship for more than a century. Both countries have close ties not only in the economic and trade fields, but also in the cultural and academic areas, and their friendship is growing at a steady pace. The contacts between Japan's Imperial Family and the Danish Royal Family also has a significant role to play for the two countries friendship. H. R. H. Crown Prince Frederik visited Japan with a Danish economic mission in October, 1997. The first official visit of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress to Denmark was realized in June, 1998.
Economic Relations
The economic relations between Japan and Denmark are fairly well developed and stable. Denmark enjoys a trade surplus with Japan. The main export items from Japan to Denmark are passenger cars, VTR, motorcycles, and computers. Especially Japanese cars have a large market share of about 25 percent (as of 1996). Pork, medicines, shipping parts, shrimp, and cheese are the main import items from Denmark to Japan. The toy manufacturer "Lego" and "Nobo Nordisk" are among the companies which have succeeded in the Japanese market. Major Danish enterprises, such as the worldwide shipping agent Maersk, Royal Copenhagen, and George Jensen, have also made inroads into the Japanese market.

Developing a new cooperative culture: Denmark's Electronic Research Library Jens Thorhauge, director, The Danish National Library Authority Introduction Denmark's Electronic Research Library is a project running for five years (1998-2002) and funded by the three Danish Ministries of Culture, Research and Education respectively with a total budget of 200 millions DKK. The aim of the project is like that of other electronic library projects. namely primarily to offer users the chance to obtain relevant research information directly, regardless of where the information is located. The reason for setting up a project and granting extra funding was a wish to accelerate the process of change. In 2002 the research libraries are supposed to run the electronic library without extra funding. Four main components are defined in the first project plan (English summary 1): National infrastructure, library infrastructure, digital resources and user facilities.

The Akan King in Denmark
Ghana and their history and rich cultural traditions go as far back as anyone can remember. Keeping traditions alive and passing it on to the next generation is actually one of the main reasons that the ceremony is carried out among the Akans now living in Denmark. The cultural festival marks a new year and maybe a new king, but first of all it is a social and cultural event bringing people together to have fun. It is an occasion where ancestors are honoured and history is explained to the children. The Akans consist of several ethnic groups which all speak Twi of Fante. They also have common traditions and culture, among them the importance of sacred stools representing the kings and chiefs. When a king and queen (Akanhene and Akanhemmaa) are elected, they are said to be enstooled. The stool represents their power and draw historic lines back to the ancestors. The hand-woven Kente material is another important cultural symbol and nearly everybody wears something of Kente on a special occasion like this.
