Denmark - History

DENMARK Denmark lies between the North Sea and the Baltic, between northern Europe and the o ther Scandinavian nations, and (with more than 500 islands) between dry land and open sea. From this enviable seafaring position Denmark has forged a magnificent history and developed a remarkable culture. In the eleventh century, Viking ships carried the power of the Denmark monarchy to all of the coasts of medieval Europe. Today, visitors from all over the world come to Europe's oldest kingdom to explore the royal city of Copenhagen , to sample the glories of Denmark 's rich culture, and to meet its vibrant and friendly people. Vestiges of its royal past are readily apparent in Denmark 's stately castles, gardens, and manor houses. A fairytale atmosphere evoked by Copenhagens green towered skyline and the ever present memories of Hans Christian Andersen's magical tales.
Denmark's cities are filled with gracious plazas, statues, fountains, gardens and wide tree-lined walkways, open-air markets, flower vendors on street corners, museums, galleries, and little cafes offering strong coffee and delectable pastries.
As a matter of fact Denmark is one of the best-kept food secrets in all of Europe. Though specialties like Denmark pastries, open-faced sandwiches and fiery aquavits are known and appreciated internationally, they represent just the tip of Denmark gastronomy. Hundreds of restaurants and traditional inns around the country offer a variety of dishes, ranging from the authentic, hearty meals of Denmark 's maritime heritage to the inspired creations of a new generation of chefs.

SØREN KIERKEGAARD - Life and Work by F.J. Billeskov Jansen
A Critical Epoch for Denmark
A West Jutland Family
These merchants from west Jutland were thrifty and pious. In the Moravian Brethren congregation in Copenhagen they found again the strict idea of sin they knew from their homeland - as well as the corresponding fervent hope of grace. Michael Kierkegaard had made a lot of money when, as early as February 1797, during an illness, he had made over his flourishing business to others. The illness was overcome, and for forty years Kierkegaard lived as a wealthy rentier continuously followed by economic good fortune; in the State bankruptcy of 1813 he escaped any serious losses. In this way was preserved the fortune that was to bring Søren Kierkegaard a way of life independent of money.
Childhood and Youth

the way for the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle; like Hegel he attacked German Romantic irony, whose morally dissolute effects he had recently felt in his own soul and body. Thus The Concept of Irony is the expression of ideals that were to inspirit Part Two of the coming major work, EitherOr* 1 (1843).

Human Sacrifice is a fascinating and alluring topic to research and study about in ancient cultures, but may also be an unbelievable and skeptical topic for many as well. How could such a savage and terrifying act be carried out on one or more humans by other humans, and not be ashamed for such a disregard to human life? Ancient cultures such as the Celts had a much different outlook on life and lifestyle than modern cultures today. As they intermingled legends with facts, reality with the fantastic and made of life their own universe that was to be understood in those terms, it might be easier to understand why groups such as the Celts may have used human sacrifice as a vice, and event in everyday life, for the benefit of a whole population. It is understood that they believed ardently that there was a life after death, so to kill or be killed was not such a negative act, since it would only give honor to that victim in the eyes of the gods of the 'Otherworld'. Human Sacrifice can be viewed in two different ways, and was probably by the Celts as well depending on the circumstance that brought forth the sacrificial event or ceremony. One view was that, as forces of nature ( animals , weather etc.) understood by the Celts as something that could be controlled by gods or goddesses such as the Mother Goddess, if crops were failing or animals falling victim to disease it was possible to offer the gods or nature itself human blood to placate them hoping that in return they will have a positive turn of events to insure the health of the population. Still this might seem far fetched but as put by Cahill, these terms of some kind of manipulation to a view of god, it might not be as hard to understand. "There is probably not a reader-even the most convinced atheist-who has not offered from time to time an old-fashioned

Newspapers
Copies of dailies per 1000 head of population in Denmark compared to other western countries (2000)
Relative to most western countries, many Danes take a newspaper. In Denmark the circulation figures were stable 1983-89, but then fell by about 11%. The mid-day newspapers BT and Ekstra Bladet fell by 30%, provincial newspapers by 11%, while the national newspapers maintained their circulation, which in 1996 was 11% greater than in 1983. Since 1983, the total number of newspapers has fallen from 48 to 38. In 1996, about 1.6 million newspapers were sold each day, and these were read by 3 million readers, or 68% of the population of 13 years of age and over. In 1999 74% read a newspaper every day. It is especially the very young, the unemployed and the oldest members of the community who are less inclined to read a newspaper, and in general there are fewer female than male readers. On an ordinary day, the Danes spend about half an hour reading a newspaper.
TV and Radio
Use of television and radio in minutes per day in Denmark compared to other western countries (2000) The Danes watch television less and listen to radio more than the average European. Generally speaking, television is watched most in southern Europe and least in Scandinavia. In the 1980s the numbers of hours during which Danes watched television were very stable, but between 1990 and 1999 the number has risen by about 24% as more and more viewers have been able to receive satellite television via the hybrid network or from satellite aerials. An average family can receive 14 television stations. The youngest, aged 4-11, watch least television, those over 55 most, i.e. about 3 1/3 hours daily.
