Biogeography and ecology of plant invasions in the Galapagos Islands with a case study of Psidium guajava L. (common guava)

Contents: Research Summary
Research Summary
Over the past 50 years biological invasions have increasingly been recognized as one of the greatest threats to intact ecosystems and to human security. In spite of this concern and a growing body of evidence that it is justified, many fundamental questions remain unresolved.
The Galapagos Islands' simplified ecosystems provide a unique opportunity to research fundamental questions of invasion ecology. A single species, Psidium guajava , has invaded several islands, each to varying degrees over the past hundred years and each of which possesses a characteristic flora and vegetation zonation which further facilitates such a study.
This research has the following objectives:
1) develop and analyse a comprehensive dataset of invasive vascular plant species for the Galapagos Islands and determine the extent to which it conforms to or refutes existing models describing plant invasiveness;

All ten of the field stations are set within two of the most important World Conservation Priority Areas - the Tropical Andes and the Choco-Darrien Corridors (Conservation International). Each field station is set within significant forest settings and offers ample work and living space as well as logistical support for researchers. The majority of forests at all stations are mature-phase, with some small sections of secondary forest of various ages. Station personnel will help assist researchers start their respective research projects. Students will need to bring along or purchase research equipment not available at the biological stations.
