Perhaps the most famous visitor to Ecuador's Galapagos Islands was Charles Darwin. Aboard the HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage, Charles Darwin, at age 26, visited the Galapagos archipelago in 1835 and spent a total of five weeks there studying its natural surroundings. It was not until 1859 that his monumental work, "Origin of Species," was published. In 1854, Herman Melville wrote on his impressions about the Galapagos Islands: "Take 5 and 20 heaps of cinders dumped here and there in an outside city lot: imagine them magnified into mountains and the vacant lot the sea and you will have a fit idea of the general aspect of the Encantadas." Known as the Sistine Chapel of South America, the Cathedral La Compania of Quito, Ecuador was built by Jesuits. Construction of this magnificent cathedral began in 1605 and was completed in 1768. The front chancel is gilded with over seven tons of gold. Galapagos Islands/Ecuador Book Selections

The Pinta island subspecies of Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus abingdoni) are survived by a single male named "Lonesome George". Attempts to mate Lonesome George with female tortoises of the closest subspecies have not been successful. The Galapagos have lived in virtual isolation for millions of years. In total, they consist of 61 islands and islets, with 13 main islands. Seeming like shadows upon the sea from one another, the 13 main islands are Baltra, Espanola, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabela, Marchena, Pinta, Pinzon, San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago. The small town of Otavalo, in Ecuador, is famous for its Saturday Indian market, which dates back to pre-Inca times. The market is a colorful, festive affair, and the Otaveleños who host it do so in their traditional dress. Otaveleños use traditional backstrap looms to create their clothes and tapestries. Their work is so much in demand these days that the Indians have opened shops across Ecuador and now sell directly to galleries and stores in the US and Europe.

INTRODUCTION Ecuador is located on the equator and was perhaps therefore named so. Ecuador is the Spanish word for "equator". Ecuador's history dates back to 15,000 and 20,000 BC, traces of which can be found in archaeological sites located all across Ecuador. Once part of the Inca Empire, Ecuador came under Spanish rule in 1533. It became independent in 1830. Location of Ecuador Ecuador, a republic in northwestern South America, is bounded by Colombia on the north, by Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean on the west. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands (Colón Archipelago) in the Pacific, about 965 km (about 600 mi) west of the mainland. Climate of Ecuador Due to geographic differences in altitude, longitude and latitude, and the climatic effects of the Pacific Ocean, the Amazon, and the Andes, the various regions and sub regions of Ecuador have very different climates and microclimates. The Pacific coast has a rainy season between December and May and a dry one from June to November. The Highlands, on the other hand, have a rainy and cold climate from November to April and a dry one from May to October. In the Amazon, the climate is rainy and humid between January and September, with temperatures between 23 and 36 degrees centigrade, and it is dry between October and December. The Galapagos has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging between 22 and 32 degrees centigrade.

A group of volcanic islands lying along the equator in the Pacific Ocean west of the mainland of Ecuador. The islands are famous for their rare species of fauna, including the giant tortoises for which they are named. Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835 and collected a wealth of scientific data that contributed to his theory of natural selection. The Galapagos
part of "A Photographer's Guide to Ecuador, the Galapagos, and Peru" by Philip Greenspun in December 2004 Home Travel Ecuador and Peru : One Section The volcanic Galapagos Islands rose from the sea floor starting around 5 million years ago. They are separated from the continent of South America by 600 miles of ocean and therefore the species have evolved separately from their forebears on the mainland. The islands were not visited by humans until approximately 500 years ago. Thus the wildlife has not had time to evolve a fear of human beings and can be approached and photographed very closely. Here is a place where you can take a bird's portrait with a 50mm lens. Even if you're not interested in the specific oddities of the Galapagos, the biogeography of islands is worth studying because to a large extent that's what all of Earth's biogeography will look like in 100 years or so. Ecologists distinguish between two types of islands. The first are volcanic oceanic islands such as the Galapagos that sprung up from nowhere and collect species only by immigration from the air and water. The second are "land-bridge" islands such as Madagascar or Bali that were once connected to a continent but split off with a sampling of whatever wildlife happened to be around at the time. Because they are small and have small populations islands are subject to vastly more extinctions than continents.
There are four ways to see the Galapagos:
