Ecuador - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Have you ever heard of the equator? Do you have an idea what it is? The equator is a place on earth. But it isn't a single place. The equator stretches all the way around the earth. It is an imaginary line that goes east and west. It goes around the middle of the earth.
The equator is halfway between the north and south poles. Usually, countries on or near the equator are pretty hot. There is a country named after the equator. This country is called Ecuador.
Ecuador is located in South America. Its capital city is Quito. To Ecuador's west is the Pacific Ocean. To Ecuador's north is Colombia. To Ecuador's south is Peru. Ecuador isn't a very big country. It is one of the smallest in South America. But Ecuador isn't limited to mainland South America. Some of Ecuador is far away. The Galapagos Islands, about 1,000 km away in the Pacific Ocean, belong to Ecuador. And the Galapagos are incredible. In fact, there is a giant turtle named after the Galapagos.
Many islands actually make up the Galapagos Islands, but there are just 13 main islands. About 17,000 people live there. There are also many different animals in the Galapagos. There are many animals and plants that can only be found in the Galapagos. There are also many different plants and animals in mainland Ecuador.

Today, the Galapagos are considered one of the most active volcanic island groups in the world. Many islands are only the tips of some volcanoes and show an advanced state of erosion, others are completely immersed. Recent eruptions as the Marchena in 1991 or Fernandina in 1995, are evidence that the other islands are constantly forming. Other islands like Baltra and North Seymour, have evidence of having been formed by tectonic movements, in which the bottom of the ocean was pushed towards the surface.

History and Exploration
The Galápagos was officially annexed by Ecuador in 1832. Over the years, some interesting personalities have inhabited the islands. The first man to live there for two years in the early 1800s was a "wild" Irish man, Patrick Watkins, who survived by growing vegetables and trading them for rum with the whalers. In 1832 a prosperous colony of convicts, political prisoners, and other unwanted people was established on Floreana. Floreana later became a fashionable island and many luxurious yachts called to pay a visit to the "Robinson Crusoes" of the island. Today, more than 20,000 people (mostly Ecuadorian Indians) live on the islands – the majority on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal.

Best Time to Visit
"It's hard for me to choose my favorite time in the islands because every season in Galápagos is great! Virtually straddling the equator, there is very little seasonal climate variation in the Galápagos. Whenever you visit, you'll be amazed by the wildlife displaying at your feet and at the snorkeling experiences with sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas and tropical fish. What's underwater is as interesting as what's above! "In the winter (November through March) Galápagos is a perfect getaway to a warm climate (daytime temperatures average from 80-95 degrees). The water is also the warmest during this time of year - averaging between 70 and 75 degrees - so it is a great time for swimming and snorkeling. When the water is the warmest it is also the calmest, which is good for people who like to snorkel and people who are concerned about seasickness. There are lots of sunny days - and great sunsets. You can see the green flash! This is also the rainiest time of the year, but it is important to remember that these are desert islands and rainfall during this time averages only 1-2 inches per month. Rain showers also bring lots of vegetation and flowers. At this time of the year, a large number of tortoises and green sea turtles abound in the islands, but you may miss the waved albatross, which goes out to sea between November and April.

The Galapagos Islands

The archipelago is a little world within itself, or rather a satellite attached to America, whence it has derived a few stray colonists, and has received the general character of its indigenous productions. Considering the small size of these islands, we feel the more astonished at the number of their aboriginal beings, and at their confined range. Seeing every height crowned with its crater, and the boundaries of most of the lava-streams still distinct, we are led to believe that within a period, geologically recent, the unbroken ocean was here spread out. Hence, in both space and time, we seem to be brought somewhat nearer to that great factthat mystery of mysteriesthe first appearance of new beings on this earth. Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle
Location, Geography , Climate E cuador's most beloved and popular national park lies in splendid isolation about 960 kilometers off the mainland. Made famous by Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands are no less enthralling now than they were a hundred years ago. Every year, thousands of curious visitors journey to the remote islands to behold the wondrously variegated wildlife that inspired The Origin of Species. Relatively young, the Galapagos sprouted out of the Pacific from a suboceanic lava vent on the ocean floor. This same process created the Hawaiian Islands, and it continues today in both island groups. In the Galapagos, the vent is gradually creeping east with the Nazca plate, forming more islands as it moves. There are currently sixty named islands, the principals being Fernandina, Isabela, Baltra, James, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal.

GOODIES The Galapagos Archipelago is a cluster of some 13 volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean about and associated islets and rocks located just under the equator, about 600 miles west of Ecuador in South America. The oldest of the islands are about 4 million years old and the youngest are still in the process of being formed. The Galapagos islands are considered to be one of the most active volcanic areas in the world. There are 13 large islands, 6 smaller ones and 107 islets and rocks, with a total land area of about 8,000 square kilometres. The islands are volcanic in origin and several volcanoes in the west of the archipelago are still very active. Galapagos is a province of the Republic of Ecuador and five of the islands are inhabited, with a total population of around 18,000 people. The capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island, although the largest town is Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. The islands were discovered by chance in 1535 when father Tomas Berlanga, the bishop of Panama sailed to Peru to settle a dispute between Francisco Pizarro and his lieutenants after the conquest of the Incas. The bishop's ship stalled when the winds died and strong currents carried him out to theGalapagos. In his account of the adventure, he described the harsh, desert-like condition of the islands and their trademark giant tortoises. He wrote about the marine iguanas, the sea lions and the many types of birds. He also noted the remarkable tameness of the animals that thrill and delight modern visitors.

HISTORIC SUMMARIZATION OF THE COLUMBUS ARCHIPIELAGO Here you will find interesting information about the history of these wonderful Ecuadorian islands. The Columbus Archipelago was discovered accidentally by the , during year . He gave them the name of " the Galapagos Islands ", due to the similarity that he found between the terrestrial turtles which lived in some of the islands, and the Galapagos or women saddle. There were many of such turtles in those islands. Today, they are officially called "the Columbus Archipelago". After knowing the existence of the islands, they were visited and used. Pirates were the first on visiting the islands for over 200 years, since this archipelago was the best hiding place; an excellent place to heal their injures after the combats, careen their ships and re-provide of water, meet and oil for their new robberies. Eventually, the hunting and fishing lead to whale and tuna floats captains to this far away -but rich in species- world. Every time, the fame of the islands grew more and many groups of oil-searching men, furrier were getting there, as plant and zoo animals collectionists, and people interested in research. During presidency in , and with all the geographical and historic rights, the Ecuadorian State, takes possession of the Galapagos Archipelago, and colonizes the islands by territorial protection and economic reasons.

The Galapagos Islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, may not be the actual Garden of Eden, but Adam and Eve would have felt right at home there. M/V Galapagos Explorer II , built in 1990 as the Italian liner Renaissance III, is the newest and most elegant of the vessels cruising the Galapagos waters. Extraordinary care has been taken to make the ship as ecologically correct as possible.. Fields of hardened "rope" lava and multi-colored strata of pumice and volcanic ash in awesomely twisted waves confirm the violent growth of the more than 60 islands that make up the Galapagos chain The ship sails most of the night to reach small Bartolome Island, an eye-popping lunar landscape that is ideal as a classroom to explain the volcanic origins of these islands. Other days will include transit along the Bolivar Canal where migrating whales may be sighted and a pleasant, hilly hike on Isabela Island to follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin.
The Galapagos Islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, may not be the actual Garden of Eden, but Adam and Eve would have felt right at home there. Isolated for millennia by geography and ocean currents, to this day the animal life of Galapagos can be approached almost to within touching distance. It's a place where visitors really can "talk to the animals" at close range, Dr. Doolittle-style. The response of iguanas, sea lions, tortoises and an abundant bird population is in their lack of fear for humankind.

GEOGRAPHY
Despite its small size, Ecuador is one of the worlds most varied Countries. Ecuador is bordered by Colombia to the north and Peru to the south and east with the Pacific coast of South America to the west with the equator passing though Ecuador. Mainland Ecuador has three regions. The western coastal lowlands, central highlands and eastern Amazonian lowlands. Western pacific lowlands The western coastal lowlands used to be heavily forested, but most of the natural vegetation is now destroyed for agriculture and the mangroves have been hacked and replaced with shrimp ponds. This region is made up of fertile plains, rolling hills, and sedimentary basins traversed by a plethora of rivers that rush from the heights of the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. The nations most important and beautiful rivers can be seen here. The western provinces of Los Rios, Manabi and El Oro are the most intensively farmed in Ecuador.
