Former Prime Minister of Canada
As a former Canadian prime minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was a flamboyant and charismatic political giant who led the country through some of the most tumultuous events and passionate politics in the history of Canada. From the Official Languages Act in 1969, to the October Crisis in 1970, the 1980 referendum and the patriation of the Constitution in 1982, Trudeau dominated Canada's political landscape like few others.
Pierre Trudeau Biographies
- Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau was first elected Canada's prime minister in 1968. He remained in power over the following 16 years until 1979. He wore sandals in the Canada's House of Commons, dated celebrities such as Barbara Streisand, Kim Cattrall, Liona Boyd, and Margot Kidder, occasionally used obscenities to insult his opponents, and one time, Pierre Trudeau did a pirouette behind the back of Queen Elizabeth II. As prime minister, Trudeau patriated the Canadian Constitution from the British Parliament to Canada and incorporated in it the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The influence of Trudeau's policies and actions in Canada is still strong and very evident in Canadian politics today. Pierre Trudeau's status as a political giant in Canadian history is indisputable.

He worked mostly in black and white, with a large 8x10 view camera, often catching his subjects in surprisingly intimate or pensive moments. (His famous 1941 portrait of a glowering Churchill was snapped after Karsh snatched a cigar from between the prime minister's lips.) Many of his portraits were printed in Life magazine, giving Karsh even wider exposure. Among his subjects were

FAMOUS CANADIANS
Using the internet, investigate a famous Canadian hero. You will need to know a lot about this hero in order to complete the database. Each box must be filled in.
Grade Five students must research three people from three different areas of interest. Grade Six students must likewise research three people, but one MUST be a pre-approved Canadian political figure.
The family information, dates for birth and death and quotes can sometimes be hard to find. Look for them on each of the websites but if you can't find them, you can search the internet after you have completed your second record.
The category called "Accomplishments" is what the person did that made him/her a Real Canadian Hero. This is all of the things they did in their lifetime that YOU think are important.
The category called "Impact" is what difference the accomplishments made to Canada or the world. WHY is this person a Canadian hero? This question is what will make you decide which hero to investigate. If you cannot come up with an impact statement, then you should probably choose a different person.
For instance, Terry Fox's accomplishments were that he attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He did this with only one leg, after having lost his other leg to cancer. Examples of the impact of this are that he made Canadians more aware of cancer and the need for research, he inspired many Canadians to think about how lucky they were, and that if he could do it, they could. The impact statement WILL NOT be anywhere on the internet, you must decide for yourself what each person's impact is, based on what their accomplishments are.

23 February 2001 Mr Speaker, Mr Speaker of the Senate, Mr Prime Minister, Honourable Members of the Senate, Members of the House of Commons. It is a rare honour to be invited to address you today, here where the common bond between our two nations is symbolised. Of course ours isn't a relationship built only on shared history and sentiment. Canadian investment in Britain has grown by over 50 % in the last six years, making you the fourth largest investor in our country. Britain is the second largest investor in Canada. Last year alone, British companies committed more than C$13 billion here. The country Voltaire likened to "quelques arpents de neige" and Edward Gibbon to ancient Germany, is today for Britain a high-tech hub of the global economy. You are world leaders now in the new economy. But there are ties deeper than commerce alone can ever be.
