Biographies written in the late Victorian age portrayed their subjects as paragons of virtue. Scholarly biographical writing, with a heavy emphasis on research and documentation, was inaugurated by O.D. Skelton with his Life and Letters of Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1921). The "life and times" tradition was primarily interested in national achievements and the subject’s life was tied to politics and society. It emphasized the subject’s public career and paid little attention to private life. Biographers assumed that their subjects were all important to the times and their role in society or the nation was a noble and positive one. Rarely were women the subject of these biographies because it was thought that women’s lives were confined to the private sphere with little impact on public life. This biographical tradition in Canadian historiography reached its pinnacle in the 1950s with Donald Creighton’s two volume biography of John A. Macdonald, The Young Politician and The Old Chieftain , and J.M.S. Careless’s

Have your say - responses,
Part 3 Here is what some globeandmail.com visitors had to say about who their favorite prime minister is and why. You can find links to other responses at the bottom. Part 1 Part 2 Part 4 Part 5 ... Part 6 To add your opinion, go to our submissions page. Although we agree that Sir John should be the first Prime Minister to be honored, it really is a three-way tie between MacDonald, Laurier and Trudeau. Macdonald for fathering the country, Laurier thru Clifford Sifton for bringing immigration to the west and thus in a sense, fathering the west, and Trudeau who for good or bad at least when the FLQ was certain that he would back Quebec, learned that he would back Canada instead. For all the "wrongs" of Trudeau, for all his so-called arrogance and whatever might be said against, when Canada was in the lurch...he called in the troops. Was it "over-kill"...political expediency, we will never know the truth. The "wisemen" are now dead, so we will never know the real truth. The fact for whatever reason that Trudeau called in the troops and proclaimed the War Measures Act must be seen as a form of being a father to a nation in the same way as Macdonald, and Laurier were. Peter Jennings
Peter was born on July 29, 1938 in Toronto, Ontario. His father, Charles Jennings, was a big player with the CBC . At age 9 Peter was hosting a weekly half-hour radio show on CBC called Peter’s Program . Peter attended the University of Ottawa and Carleton University , but dropped out and went to work at a radio station in Brockton. This lead to a spot as host of a CBC public-affairs program. A high profile story brought the attention of the CTV , where in 1962 he became a co-anchor of Canada’s first national commercial network newscast. Elmer Lower, former ABC News President, discovered Peter while he was at CTV. In 1964 Peter left CTV for New York for a short segment on the ABC Evening News. In 1965 he made history as the youngest anchor ever on the ABC Evening News. His relative youth and inexperience weren’t up to the match with Walter Cronkite on CBS and in 1968 his tenure as co-anchor ended. He stayed on with ABC and became the Middle East bureau chief until he moved up to Chief Foreign Correspondent in 1975. These years abroad lead to expanded credibility of Peter as a newscaster. In 1978 he became the London Anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight, and in 1983 he moved back to the States where he still reigns today as the Anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. He has also gained the title of Senior Editor of the nightly newscast.

Born: August 26, 1875, Perth, Scotland
    Died: February 11, 1940
When Lord Tweedsmuir became Governor General, Canada was graced with a very literary vice-regal couple. Lord Tweedsmuir was a prolific author, writing two or three books a year – his suspense novel Thirty-Nine Steps later became famous when Alfred Hitchcock made it into a movie. Lady Tweedsmuir wrote many books and plays under the name of Susan Buchan. During his time as Governor General, Lord Tweedsmuir continued to write and his book Augustus , and his autobiography, Memory Hold-the-Door , were penned at Rideau Hall. While he pursued his own writing career, he also promoted the development of a distinctly Canadian culture. In 1936, encouraged by Lady Tweedsmuir, he created the Governor General's Literary Awards, which continue to be Canada's most prestigious recognition of literary merit. Lady Tweedsmuir was active in promoting literacy in Canada. She used Rideau Hall as a distribution centre for 40,000 books, which were sent out to readers in remote areas of the west. Her program was known as the "Lady Tweedsmuir Prairie Library Scheme". Together, Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir established the first proper library at Rideau Hall.
