Sir John A. Macdonald: Father of Confederation
Sir John A. Macdonald RELATED LINKS COUNCIL SALUTES Kingston's municipal politicians offer a tribute to Macdonald during birthday Council meeting. RESTING PLACE The famous Cataraqui Cemetary is a veritable Who's Who of Kingston's past.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815, John Alexander Macdonald emigrated to Canada with his parents at age five. Macdonald attended the Midland Grammar and the John Cruickshank School in Kingston before articling with George Mackenzie, a Kingston lawyer. Mackenzie was so impressed with Macdonald that he sent him to open a law office in Napanee. When Mackenzie died in 1835, Macdonald returned to Kingston to open his own legal practice. In 1836, he was called to the bar. By 1843, Macdonald's law office had become one of the busiest in Canada. The following year, he was appointed as a city councillor. In 1844 Macdonald decided to run for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Canada, which then consisted of Canada West (formerly Upper Canada) and Canada East (formerly Lower Canada, now Quebec). The two colonies were divided by nationality, with English prominent in the West, and French in the east. Both colonies voted separately and each named a Premier. Macdonald won by a large majority and was elected as the Conservative (Tory) representative for Kingston.

If you happen to know the condemned man was Louis Riel and remember that it was prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald who spat out those hateful words on the eve of the M©tis leader's execution for treason, you just have to see Chester Brown's new book. For those less familiar with the leading political actors in this blood-spattered chapter of early Canadian history, Brown's just-published Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography, is a thrilling way to catch up with a decisive moment from our nation's past - the birth of Manitoba and the so-called "Half-breed Rebellion" of the late 1800s. Issued by Montreal 's Drawn and Quarterly Publications, the bio is an impressive work of art that delivers the narrative goods with a cinematic punch.

Time to honour a national hero
Sir John A. built this nation and was its greatest prime minister, says former PM JOHN TURNER. He deserves the recognition Americans give their most notable leaders By John Turner Part 1 of 2: '... and above all let us be Canadians'
Sir John A. Macdonald VIDEO
from CTVNEWS.com Former prime minister John Turner on Sir John A. Macdonald (Jan. 12, 2002) Brian Mulroney marks the centennial anniversary of John A. Macdonald's death (June 6, 1991) W-FIVE: Prof. Donald Creighton, John A. Macdonald biographer (January 8, 1967) Printable versions of the essay Text .pdf Take the Sir John A. quiz Click here There are many who feel that Jan. 11 should be a national holiday, for on Jan. 11, in the year 1815, in Glasgow, Scotland, John Alexander Macdonald was born. In few other countries would a national hero be so neglected. In comparing Macdonald to Washington it is probably safe to say that Sir John played a greater role in forging the Canadian nation state than Washington did in determining the nature of his United States. In addition, Macdonald was the more interesting personality. The irony is that the interesting human aspects of Macdonald's personality have been allowed to obscure the true greatness of the man. Britain will never forget her Cromwell, her Pitt and her Disraeli. The hero whose name we add to our list of immortals, John Alexander Macdonald, had much of the force of an Oliver Cromwell, some of the compacting and conciliating tact of a William Pitt, the sagacity of a William Gladstone, and some of the shrewdness of a Benjamin Disraeli. To read the biography of John Alexander Macdonald is, essentially, to read a "new world biography."

Official Lyrics of O Canada!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free! From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
The History of the National Anthem
Summary "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

Winter 2001
Prime Minister Trudeau at the opening of the Tulip Festival in Ottawa, May 17, 1968 Last fall saw a public outpouring of grief in Canada at the passing of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. For those with long enough memories, it brought to mind "Trudeaumania"-the tidal wave of enthusiasm that swept the charismatic leader into the Prime Ministership with a majority government in the 1968 elections. The event marked the opening of a new chapter in Canadian history. With their resounding electoral victory, Trudeau and his government had every right to assume that Canadians had given them a mandate for change. They embarked on a full-scale re-examination of public policy, and no element was too entrenched or hallowed by tradition to escape critical re-appraisal. One part of the process was a revamping of Canadian foreign policy, with Trudeau taking a personal hand. In a statement announcing the review, the government gave notice that Canada would no longer act as "an international boy scout," that its national interests would henceforth come first and that Canadian foreign policy would be "the extension abroad of national policies." In itself, this stance was not unconventional. But the changes it heralded were, reflecting Trudeau's left-of-centre political philosophy, his distrust of Cold War attitudes, and his conviction that Canada could and should pursue a more independent path in world affairs. More fundamentally, the stance expressed Trudeau's innate inclination to take nothing for granted, to question existing facts and to return to first principles in doing so.

He was born in Saint-Lin, Canada East (what would later become Quebec), and graduated with a B.C.L. from McGill University in 1864. In 1868 he wed Zoe Lafontaine (1841-1921).
Often considered one of Canada's great statesmen and the first francophone prime minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier is well known for his policies of conciliation and nation building. He argued for an English-French partnership in Canada. "I have had before me as a pillar of fire," he said, "a policy of true Canadianism, of moderation, of reconciliation."
Early Career
Before joining the Liberals, Laurier was a member of the radical Rouge wing of Quebec politics. He became disenchanted with extremism and ideology, and was a key player in uniting Les Rouges of Quebec with the Clear Grits and Reformers of Ontario into what is now the Liberal Party of Canada. Distinguished by his debonair charm and intellect, Laurier was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1874, serving briefly in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie as Minister of Inland Revenue. Chosen as leader of the Liberal Party in 1887, he gradually built up his party's strength with his personal following in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. He led the Liberal Party to victory in 1896 and remained prime minister until 1911.

CBC NEWS ONLINE In December 1999, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was named top Canadian newsmaker of the 20th century. He finished ahead of prime ministers Mackenzie King, Lester Pearson, Wilfrid Laurier and Brian Mulroney, all of whom made the top ten. Think what you will of the century-ending poll, but no one will ever will remember the man as Pierre Who. At the turn of the century, he had been out of office 15 years. He had recently lost his son, Michel, who was killed in November 1998 at the age of 23 when an avalanche carried him into a glacial lake in British Columbia. At the memorial service weeks later, Trudeau looked gaunt, almost skeletal, in his grief. The following year, on October 18, Pierre Elliott Trudeau turned 80. In his prime, Trudeau was exciting, charismatic, sexy. He drove sports cars, wore capes, ascots and floppy hats, and always the signature red rose in his lapel. He slid down bannisters, canoed in white-water rapids, did pirouettes behind the Queen's back at Buckingham Palace. He made politics fashionable for the upbeat Sixties generation that emerged from the sleepy 1950s. He dated some of the most interesting women in the world — singer Barbra Streisand, movie star Margot Kidder, classical guitarist Liona Boyd. At the age of 52, he married Margaret Sinclair, the beautiful 22-year-old he had met while vacationing in Tahiti.
