The regulatory framework The regulatory framework of the Cayman Islands is at the heart of the jurisdiction's success as a financial centre with high integrity. There are five main components to the jurisdiction's regulatory regime: Cayman Islands Monetary Authority
The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is the main agency responsible for the regulation of the Cayman Islands financial industry. Established in 1997, CIMA is the product of a merger between the Financial Services Supervision Division, a government department responsible for financial regulation, and the Currency Board, a Statutory Board, which was responsible exclusively for currency matters. CIMA is operationally independent from the Cayman Islands Government while being answerable to the Government and the Legislative Assembly for the conduct of its affairs.

Cayman Islands Culture Grand Cayman has been heavily influenced by American mores, especially in George Town and the resorts along Seven Mile Beach. In the smaller villages and on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, the culture is more traditionally West Indian, although the British influence is close to the surface. English is, after all, the only language spoken on the islands, and the Queen's birthday is celebrated every June with a parade and a 21-gun salute. West Indian traditions are noticeable in the soca, calypso and reggae you'll hear emanating from locals' jeeps, clubs and bars. The Cayman's most prominent living artist is Gladwyn K Bush, an elderly painter known to most as Miss Lassie. Born in 1914, Miss Lassie didn't begin painting until encouraged by a spiritual experience in 1984. Her vibrant 'markings' (as she calls them) are mostly representations of biblical scenes as envisioned in her dreams. Miss Lassie's home on South Sound Road (ask a local for directions) is covered in paintings and is a bit of a landmark. There are lots of churches in the Caymans and lots of Christians of every stripe frequenting them. Sunday is very much a day of churchgoing, and visitors are welcome to attend most services. Whether it's a part of the religious ethic or a throwback to straitlaced British behavior, politeness and modesty are much appreciated by Caymanians: a 'good morning' will go a long way, topless bathing is illegal and it's definitely

About 32,000 people reside on the largest island, followed by 1,200 residents on Cayman Brac and a scant 120 on Little Cayman. It's a varied population, with cultures from around the globe. About a third of all residents are non-Caymanians. Most are from the US, Canada, the UK and nearby Jamaica, although a total of 113 nationalities are represented. English is the primary language in the Cayman Islands, but you'll notice it is spoken with a unique lilt, one a little different from accents in other areas of the Caribbean. It's a reminder of the islands' earliest Welsh, Scottish, and English settlers. You'll often hear the Jamaican patois as well.

Cayman Islands History and Culture
History Cayman Islands were discovered by Columbus. Before he found Cayman Islands, he discovered Little Cayman and Cayman Brac during his fourth and last voyage to the New World, on May 10, 1503. While sailing from Panama to Hispaniola, he saw two very small islands, full of tortoise, they looked as much as little rocks. Consequently, Columbus named the islands, Las Tortugas after the abundant sea turtles sighted.

Fortunately, examples of Cayman's built heritage remain woven within contemporary Cayman; however, they are vanishing quickly as historic structures and neighbourhoods are being demolished to make way for high density and often unsympathetic development that promises greater profit potential.
Our heritage architecture is a significant expression of our culture and it has played a critical role in helping to define Caymanian identity. In a time when Caymanians are struggling to define culture, the trust is working to preserve that part of our identity that is manifested through our built heritage. More specifically, the Historic Programmes are about balancing Cayman's sense of place and authenticity within the frame work of modern construction so that it isn't sacrificed for a feeling of sameness and so that our fragile culture is not entirely absorbed by another more dominant and foreign culture.

Located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, these three little islands are a captivating blend of old and new, simplicity and sophistication. Walk through George Town, the capital, situated on the largest island of Grand Cayman and you'll pass impressive financial buildings (this is the world's fifth-largest banking centre) and exquisite jewelry stores, existing alongside hundred-year old frame structures and traditional Caymanian houses with chickens strutting nonchalantly through the yard. With the highest standard of living in the Caribbean, top-notch hotels and restaurants, and one of the world's most beautiful beaches, it's not surprising that the Cayman Islands have a thriving tourism industry. Grand Cayman, in particular, is a popular stop for cruise ships, sometimes hosting 6 or 7 large vessels a day! Columbus first sighted the islands in 1503 during his final voyage to the new world. He named them "Las Tortugas" because of the abundance of green sea turtles that crowded their shores. Though no permanent settlements were established until about 200 years later, the islands are popularly said to have been a hiding place for pirates, and they certainly were a convenient stopping off place for sailors in search of fresh water and turtle meat. Though the population of sea turtles has become sparse, the Cayman Turtle Farm in West Bay raises thousands of the creatures, releasing many back into the ocean. The farm is a major tourist attraction and you can have a close look at turtles in their sea-water filled tanks in all stages of development. Turtle meat has remained an appreciated traditional food in the islands, and you can sample some of the farm-raised turtle at local restaurants, perhaps in soup or in the form of turtle steak.

GREAT DEALS From Fodors.com Which Island for You?
Which Island for You? A Sampling of Island Culture
The Caribbean population is a rich gumbo of nationalities, including Americans and Canadians who have retired to and invested in the islands. Little remains of the indigenous populations (there are Carib communities on Dominica and St. Vincent, as well as tantalizing, if sparse, archaeological remains), and many other groups have left their cultural imprint on the Caribbean. Nowhere is African culture more noticeable than in island music. Calypso was born in Trinidad, and its catchy rhythms veil the barbed working-class satire of many of the lyrics. The island is also the stomping ground of a flat-out, freewheeling Carnival that rivals the pre-Lenten celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.
