WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links The Cayman Islands are dotted with deal-cutting characters with briefcases and cellphones, scuba divers in electric wetsuits and English folk checking the cricket scores over a tipple. The islands vibrate with colour: coral reefs, bright orange frogfish, sociable stingrays and reggae beats on the street. As a result of the island's mellow charms, resorts and condos have sprung up all over, and you can count on air-con, cold beer and ESPN. But if you want to get away from it all there are lots of places to escape satellite dishes and slickness, not least of them underwater. Factoid

Jamaican culture has also seeped into the Cayman Islands culture, as is evidence by the jerk seasonings in their meats and fishes. There are number of other Caribbean favorites found in the Cayman Islands dishes such as cassava, fish-tea, Johnny cakes, patties, breadfruit, pumpkin and ackee. Sir Francis Drake explored the area in 1586, but it was 1670 before the islands came under full British rule. Grand Cayman was settled from Jamaica by 1672; Little Cayman and Cayman Brac were settled some time later and maintained a separate administration until 1877. The Governor of Jamaica held administrative responsibility for the islands until 1962, when Jamaica itself became independent. Since then the islands have had their own Governor appointed by the British crown (see Government section to follow). The present incumbent, appointed in 2002, is Bruce Dinwiddy.

CULTURE The three Cayman Islands boast a total population just over 33,000. About 32,000 people reside on the largest island, followed by 1,200 residents on Cayman Brac and a scant 120 on Little Cayman. It's a varied population, with cultures from around the globe. About a third of all residents are non-Caymanians. Most are from the US, Canada, the UK and nearby Jamaica, although a total of 113 nationalities are represented. English is the primary language in the Cayman Islands, but you'll notice it is spoken with a unique lilt, one a little different from accents in other areas of the Caribbean. It's a reminder of the islands' earliest Welsh, Scottish, and English settlers. You'll often hear the Jamaican patois as well.
