Teaching Materials What is marine mammal science? There are about 100 species of aquatic or marine mammals that depend on fresh water or the ocean for part or all of their life. These species include pinnipeds, which are seals, sea lions, fur seals and walrus; cetaceans, which are baleen and toothed whales, ocean and river dolphins, and porpoises; sirenians, which are manatees and dugongs; and some carnivores, such as sea otters and polar bears. Marine mammal scientists try to understand these animals' genetic, systematic, and evolutionary relationships; population structure; community dynamics; anatomy and physiology; behavior and sensory abilities; parasites and diseases; geographic and microhabitat distributions; ecology; management; and conservation.

What Jobs Do Biologists Have?
Research
Many researchers work at colleges and universities, where they also teach. Industry employs research biologists in fields such as biotechnology, drug development, and food processing. Some research biologists work for the government, where they aim to protect and restore the environment, breed better crops, fight human and animal diseases, evaluate food and drug safety, or work on space missions. Researchers attend seminars, read scientific journals, and write articles to tell others about their results. Some travel to exotic places to do their work. Researchers often need help from skilled people trained in biology. Laboratory technicians help carry out experiments; they often become experts at taking field measurements, manipulating cells, handling animals and chemicals, or using sophisticated instruments.
Health Care
Health care workers apply biological knowledge to keep people healthy or return sick people to health. Physicians, dentists, nurses, medical technicians, and physician's assistants all must have a solid biology background. Some health care professionals work directly with patients; others may devise public health campaigns to defeat illnesses such as tuberculosis, AIDS, cancer, and heart disease. Some work to prevent the spread of rare, deadly diseases like that caused by the now infamous Ebola virus.

ZAMBONI Driver Dream Job: Marine Biologist Chute has never had a problem with seasickness, but once back on land she endures 36 hours of immediate nausea and has a tendency to fall out of her shower or tip over in her office corridor until the landsickness wears off. Creatures of the Deep Two hundred miles out to sea, Tonie Chute checks that she is tethered securely to her research vessel and then goes to the deck's edge to help guide an 800-pound sampling net into the water. The net's fine mesh traps the tiny plankton, samples of which Chute and other marine biologists will analyze in the National Marine Fisheries Service laboratory back on shore as they investigate the effects of global warming on fish populations. "I chose this work because I wanted to be outside and get really dirty, something I try to remember when I'm cold and frightened," said Chute. The job has a surprising element of romance in it, such as being able to witness every ocean sunset and sunrise when her schedule calls for her to sleep during the day and work at night.

What is Marine Biology
Marine biology is the study of plants and animal life within the seas ecosystems. The marine biology field covers many aspects including animals, plants and protists of our estuaries, coasts, and oceans, ranging from sharks to bacteria and microscopic algae. Rather then focus on the taxonomy of species, marine biology’s specie classification is focused on the environment in which covered species are those that spend some or all their time in the water.
Marine biology is a large area of study and also includes many sub fields including:
  • Biochemistry of marine organisms Species and biomes Ecosystems Reef habitats Growth, behaviour and interactions of animals or plants Geothermal ventricals
  • Qualifications in Marine Biology
A degree Marine Biology is usually accomplished through a Bachelor of Science degree with a stream in marine biology, however course titles vary according to institutions.

View full profile … The world’s oceans are in constant motion. A complex web of currents steered by winds and the rotation of the earth carry warm water from the equator towards the poles and cold water back towards the equator. By redistributing heat around the world, these currents profoundly affect our climate. For example, warm-water currents such as the Gulf Stream are responsible for the relatively mild temperatures in northern Europe. The interaction between currents and climate is receiving a lot of attention, especially given the prospect of global warming due the buildup of greenhouse gases. Scientists are focusing on how a possible warming of the air and water might affect ocean circulation and how shifts in the currents will in turn impact the global climate. Some researchers have even speculated that global warming could trigger the shutdown of the currents carrying warm water north, plunging northern Europe into a deep freeze. To make confident predictions, however, scientists still need to work on the basics. While satellites have tracked the warm-water currents at the surface of the oceans, scientists are only gradually piecing together the complicated networks of cold deepwater currents. Amy Bower is one of the scientists working on this puzzle, one small piece at a time. Circulation in the northwest Atlantic at the depth of the Labrador Sea Water. Arrows indicate mean currents. What is Aquatic Science?
Aquatic science is the study of the planet's oceanic and freshwater environments. Oceanography is the study of the biological, chemical, geological, optical and physical characteristics of oceans and estuaries, while limnology involves the study of these same characteristics in inland systems (lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and wetlands) including both fresh and salt waters.

Launching a Career in Marine Science Although marine science is typically thought of as a graduate program, it is never too early to begin preparing for a marine career. Starting in high school, for example, you should take as many math and science courses, including computer science, as you can. To gain useful experience, consider volunteering with state agencies or private organizations that work with marine or aquatic systems. You will get the opportunity to not only work and form relationships with marine science professionals, but also develop interests that you may wish to pursue in college. Educational programs also are helpful for aspiring marine scientists. Organizations such as the National Audubon Society, Outward Bound, Sea Explorers (a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts), and various universities and regional environmental centers may offer summer programs that can provide valuable marine experiences. And never pass up a chance to talk to people who are involved in marine science such as at a school career-day presentation or at a local aquarium or science museum.

MARINE CAREERS: The Scientist by William R. Hall and Elizabeth A. Chajes Like people who work at other Sea Grant Colleges and marine institutions, we receive many calls from people who want to find out more about careers related to the ocean. Some are interested in careers like commercial fishing or diving, but most callers want to know how to become marine scientists. Many people associate marine science only with marine biology. However, marine science, or oceanography, includes many other exciting careers. There are several thousand marine scientists at work in the United States today. Approximately 40% are employed with state and federal government, 30% in universities and colleges, and 30% in private industry. If you think you'd like to be a marine scientist, the following information should help you prepare for your future career. If you find out that marine science isn't for you, but you still want to work on or near the ocean, don't give up. There are dozens of rewarding careers related to the sea. Oceanography at Palomar College: Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
    • What is the role of the ocean in limiting the greenhouse effect? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
    • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.
