Students at Newcastle benefit from our award-winning Careers Service, which provides personal advice and information on career opportunities. Our biological science students are placed competitively in the job market and the wide range of skills that they learn opens up a variety of career options. Some of our graduates have gone on to do further study or research in diverse areas such as studying auklets on the Pacific Coast of Canada or finding out the molecular basis of snake venom action. Others are employed as biotechnologists, environmental engineers, landscape architects, environmental consultants, nutritionists and government advisers, to name but a few! Many of our students train as teachers in secondary or primary schools and a number have specialized in teaching overseas.

Dear Amanda,
The job market for marine biologists/oceanographers is a far cry from
the high tech market of today but as environment and the oceans
issues become more of a priority the job market will grow. I don't
have specific statistical numbers but I know from experiences that
several students and past volunteers and interns do get hired in this
field. Please check out the career page on WhaleNet as it lists many
different areas to investigate if you are serious about pursuing a
marine related career. I became a biologist while working for this non-profit organization and although the administrative work is plentiful I do get time in the field.

This career directory is divided into three sections: general guides for oceanography and marine science; guides for marine biology, marine mammals, zoos and aquariums; and other guides covering all of science. If you are interested in marine biology, most of the general guides encompass marine biology so look at them too - don't confine yourself to the marine biology guides if you are interested in marine biology One place to find colleges offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in subjects like marine biology is Petersons at www.petersons.com/ GENERAL GUIDES

15. Becoming A Marine Biologist
What is marine biology and what is a marine biologist? and most of the students in such programs don t really intend to have careers in marine biology.
http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/becoming.html
Marine Biology Web Page Becoming a Marine Biologist What is marine biology and what is a marine biologist? I Want to Train Dolphins and Whales Here's my advice. Love dolphins and whales. Admire their beauty and their grace as they swim and move through their scores of exciting behavioral maneuvers. Worry about the whales, for many of them are in danger. Support organizations that try to conserve whales. Okay. Now please keep in mind that there are VERY FEW people in the world who study whales or other marine mammals! Same thing for dolphin trainers. Yes there are many public aquaria in the United States, but the number of people that work with dolphins as trainers are also very few. Most emails I get start with "I have always wanted to be a dolphin trainer." Fine, but you better keep your options open, just the way aspiring rock stars usually have a "day job." If every person who wanted to study dolphins went on to do so, then just about every dolphin would have its own personal observer! You are in a vast company because everyone loves dolphins. The important point is: MARINE BIOLOGY IS A LOT MORE THAN DOLPHINS. There are many important areas that you can study. Dolphins are an important part, but only a part, of the universe of marine biology. (Same goes for you shark fans.) If you truly wanted to do research on marine mammals you could enter this field through one of two routes. First, you could become a biology major in college, taking courses in vertebrate biology, physiology and evolution. Most marine mammalogists were biology majors in college. As an alternative, you could become a veterinarian, with the ultimate hope of understanding mammalian anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, and understanding the biology of mammals and their ailments. This would be a very rare route, although an interesting one.

CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY: OUTLOOKS The Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla, California, often gets requests for information on marine biology careers. The following was prepared in answer to the most frequently asked questions. WHAT DOES A MARINE BIOLOGIST/SCIENTIST DO? Although many people today are familiar with the term "marine biologist," most don't realize that, in reality, the job title of marine biologist rarely exists. The term is actually used for many disciplines and jobs in the marine sciences which deal with the study of marine life, not just for those which deal with the physical properties of the seathough many biologists study both. So a marine biologist might be a biological technician, ichthyologist, fishery biologist, marine mammalogist, microbiologist, systems analyst, or a mathematician. Even economists and sociologists, who deal with living marine resource issues, are found within the so-called field of marine biology. In addition, other marine scientists concern themselves exclusively with the physical and chemical aspects of the sea, such as physicists, hydrologists, and physical oceanographers. WHAT SCHOOLS OFFER MARINE BIOLOGY PROGRAMS?

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • A Ph.D. degree usually is required for independent research, but a master’s degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research or product development; a bachelor’s degree is adequate for some nonresearch jobs.
  • Doctoral degree holders face considerable competition for independent research positions, particularly in universities; holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in biological science can expect better opportunities in nonresearch positions.
  • Biotechnological research and development will continue to drive employment growth.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to their environment. They research problems dealing with life processes. Most specialize in some area of biology such as zoology (the study of animals) or microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms). ( Medical scientists , whose work is closely related to that of biological scientists, are discussed elsewhere in the Handbook Biological scientists who work in applied research or product development use knowledge provided by basic research to develop new drugs and treatments, increase crop yields, and protect and clean up the environment. They usually have less autonomy than basic researchers to choose the emphasis of their research, relying instead on market-driven directions based on the firm’s products and goals. Biological scientists doing applied research and product development in private industry may be required to describe their research plans or results to nonscientists who are in a position to veto or approve their ideas, and they must understand the potential cost of their work and its impact on business. Scientists increasingly are working as part of teams, interacting with engineers, scientists of other disciplines, business managers, and technicians. Some biological scientists also work with customers or suppliers and manage budgets.

Records of careers chosen by MSc graduates show that 50% of students returned to posts in the own countries. UK students have successfully found employment with a number of organisations such as DFID, WWF and environmental consultancies. PhD graduates have been similarly successful in finding employment and we are pleased that most of them remain in touch with members of the School. Many applicants for undergraduate courses are interested to know the range of careers chosen by Newcastle Marine Biologists. We are interested to keep in touch with graduates and are keen to follow the careers of students we have come to know well. Career choices have been surveyed 2 years after graduation for more than 25 years. Questionnaire returns from the last 5 years show that Marine Biologists are very employable and that more than 90% are happily settled in posts after 2 years. Remember that a degree not only improves your subject knowledge but also equips you with many skills, which are of interest to employers.

These are links to places where one can find information about careers in specific fields of biology. For the most part these pages are maintained by the professional/scientific organization whose speciality is that area. Career information is divided into the rather broad categories of "Molecular and Cellular" and "Organismal and Field" . Some sites are fairly general and are listed in both categories. There is also a listing of some sites that provide information on specific jobs and internships . Finding a career, whether it be in biology or not, is often a difficult process. For some help in this area, look at the page Career Exploration on the Internet . This page guides you through this process starting with an exploration of self.
