Introduction
Marine sciences is the study of the marine environment and its interactions with the earth, the biosphere, and the atmosphere. It is an interdisciplinary science requiring knowledge of the principles of physics, geology and geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology. The study of marine sciences provides students with a broad curriculum in the sciences, which demonstrates how the different disciplines can be brought to bear on understanding marine processes and managing ocean resources wisely. Students are prepared for graduate work in oceanography or one of the basic disciplines, civil service careers in environmental management, employment in applied environmental and marine science fields, or teaching.

Careers in Marine Science
What does a Marine Biologist do?
Two-thirds of our planet is covered with ocean and just about every field within science can use the oceans and ocean life as a subject for study. Many scientists involved in marine biology are primarily ecologists, zoologists or botanists who study an organism or organisms that live in the sea. Marine science can also include archaeology, anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Ocean science, or oceanography, is the study of the global marine environment, from the polar seas to coral island lagoons. In their studies, marine scientists combine direct observation with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control the earth's oceans. Recent concerns about global warming have encouraged scientists to view ocean science and earth science in a more holistic way in order to understand the global system as a whole. This and the plain fact that so much of the world's oceans have yet to be explored make for many exciting possibilities in the immediate future. Biological Oceanography focuses on marine organisms and how marine microbes, plants, and animals interact with each other and with the physical, chemical, and geological processes in the ocean. Biological processes in the ocean play a critical role in the total Earth system, particularly in the cycling of important biogeochemical materials such as carbon and in solar energy capture and conversion into organic material. Biological oceanographers study the distributions and abundance of marine organisms in the open ocean, coastal zone, and estuaries, both in the water column and on the seafloor.

What is Oceanography?
(Thanks to: International Oceanographic Foundation "Oceanography" is a broad field in which many sciences are focused on the common goal of understanding the oceans. Since the ocean comprises the largest ecosystem on earth, study of the ocean ecosystems is critical to understanding man's effects on the biosphere. Persons specializing in Botany, cartography, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, geophysics, limnology, mathematics, medicine, meteorology, and zoology all play roles in expanding our knowledge of marine environments. "Marine biology" is the study of life in the world's oceans, seas, bays and estuaries (in other words, in salt water), but requires an understanding of freshwater systems as well. It includes the study of all living marine organisms (from bacteria to whales) and their physical marine environment. The field of oceanography is usually broken down into sub-disciplines, including:

These organisms range in size from the smallest phytoplankton to invertebrates, such as molluscs and starfish, to vertebrates such as fish, marine birds and mammals. With over 16,000 km of coastline, and the fourth largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the world, an understanding of the marine environment is crucial to all New Zealanders. What courses do you need to become a Marine Biologist? Marine biology courses cover a broad range of disciplines including behaviour, ecology and physiology. New Zealand's marine organisms and environments are introduced in Year 1 in two courses. BIOSCI 103 : Comparative Animal Biology and BIOSCI 104 : New Zealand Ecology and Conservation. At Year 2, marine biology is covered in three courses

Oceanographer/Marine Biologist
Oceanographers help us gain a better understanding of how our oceans, and living creatures in them, function as an ecosystem. Oceanography contains a wide range of jobs including engineers, marine biologists, and zoologists (people who study animals). People with skills in these and other areas are involved in oceanography because Earth has more oceans than land, and it is a huge task to understand how the oceans work. One of the better-known careers in oceanography is marine biology. While oceanographers study oceans as a whole, marine biologists focus on the living creatures in different types of water, not just huge oceans. They also study life in seas, bays, and other large bodies of water. Oceanographers may also be technicians who specialize in working on equipment used to study the oceans. Oceanography needs technicians who are able to work on boats, electronics, and specialty equipment to make sure that their experiments run smoothly. Oceanographers also get to travel quite a bit to do research and experiments. Although some oceanographers write technical reports in a lab, others explore the oceans. If you enjoy the water, or marine animals then you should think about a career in oceanography.
