The former Nigel Kennedy has studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and the Yehudi Menuhin School in England. Kennedy states, "People can say I'm a classical violinist if they want to but I've always viewed myself as a musician who plays music and not just a certain part of it." Extractions: NEW ZEALAND: Nigel Kennedy will perform in Wellington and Auckland Nigel Kennedy, Britains greatest living violinist, visits New Zealand in December to perform two concerts on Monday 15 December in Wellington, and Tuesday 16 December in Auckland. For the first time since his worldwide multi-platinum success with Vivaldis 'Four Seasons' more than a decade ago (becoming the highest selling classical disc of all time), Nigel Kennedy returns to Vivaldi to perform his new interpretation of the 'Four Seasons' as well as the haunting 'Concerto in A minor for Two Violins' and the late and rarely heard 'Double Concerto in D'. The concerts feature Nigel Kennedy accompanied by members of the Auckland Philharmonia, with guest artists Cora Venus Lunny (2nd Violin Soloist), Taro Takeuchi (Baroque Guitar and Lute) and Bogumila Gizbert-Studnicka (Harpsichord). No one understands more than Nigel Kennedy the touch, power and impact of Vivaldis music. Who wants to experience him performing it live in concert with members of the Auckland Philharmonia will have to be on Monday 15 December, at 7.30pm, in the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington or on Tuesday 16 December, at 7.30pm, in the Auckland's Aotea Centre. For the past 25 years, Nigel Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the worlds leading violin virtuosos and is one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced. His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire.

Extractions: Nigel Kennedy, the English violin virtuoso whose punk persona has made him one of classical music's most visible figures, has recently made it a little easier for people to talk about him: He's dropped the "Nigel." Will he take the next step in pop iconography and adopt an unpronounceable cipher as his name, as Prince has done? "No," he replies, "but I thought I might pinch his symbol and change a line to see if I could get into a legal dispute with him." The most image-savvy of instrumentalists is joking, of course; he knows the publicity value of such a stunt, but he has better things to do. With his spiky, two-tone hair, his quirky retro-fop wardrobe and his rock-star anticshe once laid waste to a luxury hotel room in BerlinKennedy's public demeanor is an implicit challenge to the staid character of the classical music establishment. But he's really more Puck than punk; he's not out to destroy anything but the rigid attitudes that pigeonhole music and musicians. And while he maintains a defiantly unpolished image in order to deflect labels and confound critics, his primary focus is on playing music and having a good time doing it.

The classical music sensation returned to his tour bus after a show to discover his devastating loss, and he's convinced the crime was drug-related. But heartbroken Kennedy admits the violins, worth a staggering $46,000 (GBP25,000), were not insured, and fears it will take three years for replacements to be crafted by his supplier VIOLECTRA.. He complains, "It's a bit of a downer, I feel bereft. "The violins weren't insured or nothing, and have probably been sold in exchange for a fix of whatever drugs those cats were on. "I normally perform my set with four violins, but now I'm making do with just one, which I had with me when the trailer was robbed." view all comments (0) add your comments

His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. We associate Kennedy with Bach as often as we see him with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, but here he is with both, and he is found at his most urgently charismatic, backed by the superb strings of the BPO. Kennedy has a positive, often robust view of Bach, and approaches the finales at breathtakingly fast speeds. He has clearly undertaken some meticulous research as his playing reveals a scrupulous attention to details that are often glossed over.
Extractions: As its name implies, The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concertos, each providing a musical interpretation of the yearly cycle. Composed in 1725 by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, these compositions have become one of the most popular pieces from the baroque era. What is most startling to this listener, is that unlike most other baroque compositions, which tend to be melodically ornate, structurally precise pieces that serve more functional roles, The Four Seasons
