Listen, like um, I might not be 'eah on this number. That's why you're hearing my voice, but I'm probably on the cel phone number I've got, which is . Yeah, that's right, man -. Cooool. Okay. Just be cooool. Lay-UH. Catch you lay-UH. BAAAH-EE. OY! In 1992, he announced that he was tired of playing music by "dead guys" and retired from the stage. During the next five years, he studied other instruments, worked on his pet project of composing a suite after songs of Jimi Hendrix, started a family and continued practicing the violin three hours a day. In 1997, he returned to the concert stage with his technique intact and his street persona as defiantly down-to-earth as ever. He is currently touring with an ensemble called the Kennedy Collective playing his Hendrix concerto-suite as well as solo violin sonatas by J.S. Bach and Bela Bartók. I talked with Kennedy on October 24, 1998.

In one of the grand quadrangles, an audience is growing mildly restive. Members of the Polish Chamber Orchestra have been flitting on and off stage for 10 minutes, but of their artistic director there is no sign. Eventually, a cheer goes up as the shortish, tufty-haired man we are waiting for enters through the crowd, grinning and clenching his fist to his chest in a gesture of matey salutation. After some raucous chanting backstage, Nigel Kennedy leads his orchestra out for a performance the like of which I have never seen. It is a performance that critics would almost certainly rip apart; but it is also one that could inspire the novice to pick up a violin and practise night and day to capture just some of the magic that Kennedy brings to his art, even though he sometimes seems to treat that art as casually as the Palestinian scarf that, knotted loosely round his waist, struggles to restrain his belly and keep his trousers up.

Extractions: CONTACT: EMAIL WEBSITE Michael d'Arcy was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He began playing the violin at the age of seven and studied with Harry Cawood, Pavel Crisan and Lydia Mordkovitch. Firmly established as one of Ireland's most celebrated musicians, he first came to prominence in 1987 when his performance of Prokofiev's first Violin Concerto gained him first prize in Ireland's national competition for young musicians, the RTE "Musician of the Future" competition. Broadcast live on RTE television and radio, this award led to his being engaged for solo performances and broadcasts throughout Ireland. In the same year Michael was awarded the Bass Ireland Arts Award. During his period of study at the Royal Northern College of Music he won annual awards and scholarships, performed frequently as soloist and was leader of the Chamber, Symphony and Opera Orchestras. Since his London debut in 1990 with the Walton Concerto, Michael d'Arcy has performed to critical and public acclaim throughout Europe, North and South America and in the Far East. Eager to return to Ireland he became concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra for their 1992/1993 season, deciding to take up the same position with the RTE Concert Orchestra in 1994, a position he held until 2000 when he left to pursue a broader range of musical activities. His recent performance of virtuoso music by Paganini, Bach and Prokofiev for solo violin at the Hugh Lane Gallery earned him a standing ovation.
