His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. We associate Kennedy with Bach as often as we see him with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, but here he is with both, and he is found at his most urgently charismatic, backed by the superb strings of the BPO. Kennedy has a positive, often robust view of Bach, and approaches the finales at breathtakingly fast speeds. He has clearly undertaken some meticulous research as his playing reveals a scrupulous attention to details that are often glossed over.

Kafka, By Nigel Kennedy - A Review nigel kennedy Kafka. (EMI). review copyright (c) 1998 by Syd Baumel England s celebrated concert violinist nigel kennedy has adopted an affable punk http://www.mts.net/~baumel/kafka.html
Extractions: Since outgrowing child prodigyhood, England's celebrated concert violinist Nigel Kennedy has adopted an affable punk persona and taken to crossing over to most every cool musical genre he can lay his ears on. Usually when classical music icons make such bold forays, it seems to have more to do with vanity or greed than musicality a squirmy-to-watch lesson in how ill-equipped such purebred show animals are to walk on the wild side. Nigel Kennedy's Kafka released in 1996, but if you haven't heard it yet, it's new to you! (as it was to me until a couple months ago) is a glorious exception. It would be inadequate to say that Kennedy demonstrates that he has the chops to take on the sprawling hypergenre of progressive fusion music (rock/jazz/world/classical...). He does it so outstandingly (even better, I think, than his genrally peripatetic mentor Yehudi Menuhin) that one wonders if this is where Kennedy's true musical homeland lies. The eleven tracks of Kafka (don't ask me what the title has to do with the famous writer) all written or cowritten and coproduced by Kennedy are uniformly good music: engaging, stirring, exciting. But it's Kennedy's astonishing musicianship his deployment of an arsenal of acoustic and electric violins as if they were third arms that makes one's mouth drop. Kennedy is truly the master of all violin media.

There's no way you can compare her with the Despina or the Ferrando, for that matter. Those are just different voices. Dr G Fraser Dear Dr Fraser, Very true, but we all have our preferences. Thanks for expressing yours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alice Dear Alice, I thought I spotted you in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, last week, accompanying Nigel Kennedy. However, there was no orchestra list in the programme. G G, Edgebaston Dear G (or G, for that matter), Well spotted!!!!!!!! I was indeed decorating the English Symphony Orchestra cellos. It was an amazing week altogether, and I still find myself (cooking, writing, driving especially driving, for some reason) with Kennedy's tone singing in my ears. Of course, he WAS the vast majority of the programme. For those of you not lucky enough, like G G, to have been there, I will explain what you missed. You missed: his outfit: gent's grunge, as worn: hideous trousers, jacket four sizes too big, with designer patches on elbows and elsewhere. his (ugh) sub-mohican hair-cut his gait: pigeon-toed, rolling, faintly sailor on shore leave

Extractions: When Nigel Kennedys recording of the Four Seasons sold 2 million copies, it made him the best selling classical musician of all time. A restless soul, he gave up playing music publicly for 5 years, returning to do a Jimi Hendrix tribute, among other things. His new album, East Meets East teams him up with the deep Polish klezmer trio Kroke who we featured on the Planet in 1999. Its probably a happy coincidence that he met them because he lives in Krakow, but the music is hot, a great forum for Kennedys prodigious technique and passion. His ultra-high, perfectly in tune high notes and his rock and roll inspired electric violin have to be heard to be believed.

Extractions: (poster courtesy of Supierz Management) Rotterdam: the newly built hall has a beautiful organ that sits flat against the wall facing the auditorium. The top pipes radiate upwards and outwards creating the impression of a crown. And crowning they did when the king of the violinists came on the stage accompanied by his fellow musicians from the Polish Chamber Orchestra. Nigel is happy to be in Rotterdam and so is the public. Utrecht: the inside of the hall is very modern: when I looked towards the ceiling I could see a most impressive display of light and a moving scaffolding. In between the frame one could actually see the ceiling and the mirror! I found myself looking at the mirror quite often during the concert as most of the time Nigel moved under the mirror. It was a strange view of Nigel but I am sure you will be pleased to know that Nigel does not appear to be thinning. Other musicians: beware of that part of the stage when you play in Utrecht! Amsterdam: a most exquisite hall with a wonderful old fashioned organ! Along the walls there are plaques with names of famous composers. Whilst waiting for Nigel to arrive we read the names: Bartok, oh, yes!, Strauss, Dopper, Debussy, Dieperbrock, yes, we have Bach!, but I could not see Vivaldi. Poor Vivaldi! I did not see his name on the wall of the auditorium in Amsterdam. But then we have to remember that it was Nigel that resurrected the music of Vivaldi last century and I think that the hall was built before that!

Extractions: tai chi a bit ..I think Im nourishing the chi a little too much !!!! My vital energy is getting the better of me. Oh, well. Maybe Id better try to think about something else ? There is apparently something called the Mercury Music Prize, which is awarded annually for the best in British music, all genres included. This year, there has been a surprise nomination of a musician called Seth Lakeman, who made his CD Kitty Jay for just £300 around the kitchen at his cottage on Dartmoor. This album was inspired by the mysteries and legends of Dartmoor ..and last year he launched it in front of prisoners at Dartmoor jail. The songs retell ancient folktales from the moors, including the story of the fresh flowers that appear every morning on the grave of a servant girl who committed suicide. Well, he sounds like a really interesting person, doesnt he ? What hes doing in this column, which is supposed to be about Nigel, is probably not abundantly clear to you at this point, is it ? Just listen to what Simon Frith has to say about him, though. Hes a singer-songwriter interested in folk traditions and an incredible violin player. He sounds like a demented Nigel Kennedy.
Nigel Kennedy And The Kroke Band / East Meets East / CdRoots violinist nigel kennedy and Polish folk group Kroke in a celebration of EasternEuropean and Mediterranean culture. This album is really quite unique http://www.cdroots.com/md-kroke-east.html
Extractions: Violinist Nigel Kennedy and Polish folk group Kroke in a celebration of Eastern European and Mediterranean culture. This album is really quite unique - Nigel brings his classical skills to the table (he trained under Yehudi Menuin) both in terms of compositions and playing style. Yet, the Kroke Band's gypsy sound is in full force throughout most of the album as well, meaning that some of these pieces have some serious adrenaline running through them. Influences from North Africa and the Middle East are incorporated as well, adding to the album's joyful pandemonium. Includes the song 'Ajde Jano' with special guest vocalist Natacha Atlas. Ajde Jano (w/ Natacha Atlas) Please note! Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
