The public image of science is in one of its periodic declines. Michael W. McGreevy, Ph.D.
NASA Ames Research Center (c) 1988 (edited transcript of an invited presentation to ACM SIGGRAPH Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology, Banff, Alberta, Canada, October 17-19, 1988.) I'd like to thank Jim Foley and the rest of the symposium organizers for inviting me here today. It's a pleasure to speak to you on the topic of personal simulators and divergence from realism. Imagination in childhood and in science Every child has a built-in personal simulator. "Calvin and Hobbes" fans will recognize Calvin in this slide. Calvin has a particular talent for creating imaginary situations. He can turn himself into a mighty giant or he can abolish gravity, and then experiment with the consequences. This power of imagination and experimentation is the essence of the personal simulator. In his essay, "The imaginative mind in science," Jacob Bronowski argues that the construction of imaginary situations is an experimental process which is fundamental to human thinking. Bronowski wrote, "[I]magination...is...the human ability to make images in the mind and use them to construct imaginary situations. Science uses images, and experiments with imaginary situations, exactly as art does... Many people believe that reasoning, and therefore science, is a different activity from imagining. But this is a fallacy... Imagination is always an experimental process... A great deal of childhood play consists of acting in imaginary situations... And all this acting is a form of experiment... [H]uman beings owe much of their headlong progress in evolution to the fact that they carry out this experimental activity for a much longer time than other animals."

92. Bronowski On The Second Law And Evolution
Thermodynamics and the Arrow of Time. by jacob bronowski. (from Evolution Extended , Connie Barlow, ed., MIT Press, 1994)
http://www.ediacara.org/2lot.html
Thermodynamics and the Arrow of Time
by Jacob Bronowski (from "Evolution Extended", Connie Barlow, ed., MIT Press, 1994) It is often said that the progression from simple to complex runs counter to the normal statistics of chance that are formalized in the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Strictly speaking, we could avoid this criticism simply by insisting that the Second Law does not apply to living systems in the environment in which we find them. For the Second Law applies only when there is no overall flow of energy into or out of a system, whereas all living systems are sustained by a net inflow of energy. But though this reply has a formal finality, in my view it evades the underlying question that is being asked. True, life could not have evolved in the absence of a steady stream of energy from the sun a kind of energy wind on the earth. But if there were no more to the mechanism of molecular evolution than this, we should still be at a loss to understand how more and more complex molecules cam to establish themselves. All the energy wind can do, in itself, is to increase the range and frequency of variation around the average state: that is, to stimulate the formation of more complex molecular arrangements. But most of these variant arrangements fall back to the norm almost at once, by the usual thermodynamic processes of degradation; so that it remains to be explained why they do not all do so, and how instead some complex arrangements establish themselves, and become the base for further complexity in their turn.

Jacob Bronowski (1906)
It was on this date, January 18, 1906, that British mathematician Jacob Bronowski was born in Lodz, Poland. Fleeing the Russian conquest of Poland in World War I, the Bronowski family emigrated to Germany, then in 1920 moved to London. Bronowski was known to his friends as "Bruno," and studied mathematics at Jesus College, Cambridge, but by 1928 Bruno had discovered a love for poetry and literature. By 1933, when he received his doctorate and British citizenship, Bruno had already begun a melding of literature and science that was uniquely humanistic. The next year (1934), he was appointed lecturer in mathematics at University College, Hull, and five years later his first book, The Poet's Defense (1939) "wrestled with the relation between the truth of science and that of poetry," as he put it. His career achievement, however, was an 18-month project for BBC television called "The Ascent of Man." It was broadcast in 13 parts in 1973 and carried Bruno's philosophy of science and literature to a much wider audience than his books could reach. In it, he said, "Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature."* Perhaps the clearest statement of Bruno's religion was this: Dissent is the mark of freedom. And as originality and independence are private needs for the existence of a science, so dissent and freedom are its public needs. The safeguards which it must offer are apparent: free inquiry, free thought, free speech, tolerance. These freedoms of tolerance have never been notable in a dogmatic society, even when the dogma was Christian. Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetimes.**

Quotations
Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetime. Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature. By the worldly standards of public life, all scholars in their work are of course oddly virtuous. They do not make wild claims, they do not cheat, they do not try to persuade at any cost, they appeal neither to prejudice nor to authority, they are often frank about their ignorance, their disputes are fairly decorous, they do not confuse what is being argued with race, politics, sex or age, they listen patiently to the young and to the old who both know everything. These are the general virtues of scholarship, and they are peculiarly the virtues of science. Science has nothing to be ashamed of even in the ruins of Nagasaki. The shame is theirs who appeal to other values than the human imaginative values which science has evolved. That is the essence of science: ask an impertinent question, and you are on the way to a pertinent answer.
