Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature. Bronowski, Jacob Nature The values by which we are to survive are not rules for just and unjust conduct, but are those deeper illuminations in whose light justice and injustice, good and evil, means and ends are seen in fearful sharpness of outline. 25. Darwinism And The Division Of Labour
The founding conference of the British Society for the Social Responsibility in Science in November 1970, was on the theme, 'The Social Impact of Modern Biology'. The conference was attended by a number of eminent scientists, e.g., Nobel Laureates James Watson, Jaques Monod, Maurice Wilkins; David Bohm, jacob bronowski, R.G. Edwards (of Steptoe Edwards, the pioneers of 'testtube babies'), as well as some radicals, Hilary Steven Rose, John Beckwith. It was, perhaps, the last moment when radicals and posh scientists were relatively united. The talk was published in The Listener, 17 August 1972, pp. 202-5 and in Science as Culture no. 9 110-24, 1990.

Bronowski, Jacob
Polish-born British scientist, broadcaster, and writer, who enthusiastically popularized scientific knowledge in several books and in the 13-part BBC television documentary The Ascent of Man, issued as a book 1973.
Bronowski fled with his family to Germany when, in World War I, Russia occupied his native Poland. Moving to the UK 1920, he studied mathematics at Cambridge. He lectured at University College, Hull, 1934-42, and then did military research during World War II, remaining a government official until 1963. His last appointment was at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, from 1964.
His book The Common Sense of Science 1951 displayed the history and workings of science around three central notions: cause, chance, and order. Science and Human Values 1958 collected newspaper articles written for the New York Times about nuclear science and the morality of nuclear weapons. The Western Intellectual Tradition 1960 is an illuminating survey of the growth of political, philosophical, and scientific knowledge from the Renaissance to the 19th century, written with Bruce Mazlish. Bronowski also wrote about literature; for example, William Blake and the Age of Revolution 1965.

Jacob Bronowski 's father, Abram Bronowski, was the owner of a haberdashery firm which traded between Poland and London, and his mother was Celia Flatto. When Russia occupied Poland during World War I Bronowski's family emigrated to Germany where they lived until the war ended. Then, in 1920, the family moved to London, England. Things were not easy for Bruno, as Bronowski was known, when he arrived in England since he spoke no English. This meant a difficult start for him at the Central Foundation School in London. At school he soon found an equal interest for both science and literature. He later wrote:- I grew up to be indifferent to the distinction between literature and science, which in my teens were simply two languages for experience that I learned together. Bronowski won a mathematics scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge, and there he began his mathematical studies. He was a Wrangler (First Class) in Part I of the mathematical tripos in 1928 and Senior Wrangler (ranked top of the list of First Class students) in Part II of the mathematical tripos in 1930. However at Cambridge Bronowski's interests were much wider than mathematics and he continued with his love of literature editing a literary magazine

The Thought of Jacob Bronowski in his Essays and in the Ascent of Man Joan M. Johnson The early1970’s brought to American television screens a highly unusual offering – a thirteen week series entitled the Ascent of Man , which explored the cultural evolution of mankind, centered around science. The series, produced by the British Broadcasting Company, was unusual in several respects. It marked one of the rare instances in which the television medium developed is full potential, artistic, imaginative and educational. Also, it pursued, in depth and breadth, subjects of vital concern to contemporary man – including the history of his development through biological and cultural evolution and his inescapable responsibility as guardian of the essential dignity of the individual in our unfolding scientific future. Above all, the series enabled many thousands of people to become acquainted with a versatile man, an intellectual star in his own right, who chose to share his optimistic vision, his wit, and his warmth on the intimate basis that television allows. Jacob Bronowski was a veritable Renaissance man of the type which he describes in Magic, Science, and Civilization

Bronowski, Jacob
Born: Jan. 18, 1908, Poland
Died: Aug. 22, 1974, East Hampton, N.Y., U.S. Polish-born British mathematician and man of letters who eloquently presented the case for the humanistic aspects of science. While Bronowski was still a child, his family immigrated to Germany and then to England, where he became a naturalized British subject. He won a scholarship to the University of Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. He not only achieved high honours in mathematics but also received critical acclaim for his poetry and prose. After receiving his Ph.D. (1933) from Cambridge, he taught mathematics (1934-42) at the University College of Hull. During World War II Bronowski pioneered in a field now known as operational research and worked to increase the effectiveness of Allied bombing. After the war he headed the projects division of UNESCO (1948) and then worked for Britain's National Coal Board (1950-63). When Bronowski, on a scientific mission to Japan to study the effects of the atomic bombings (1945), saw firsthand the ruins of Nagasaki, he gave up military research. From that time on, he concentrated on the ethical as well as the technological aspects of science, and he shifted his attention from mathematics to the life sciences, the study of human nature, and the evolution of culture. Among his books are The Common Sense of Science (1951) and the highly praised Science and Human Values (1956; rev. ed. 1965). In these books Bronowski examined aspects of science in nontechnical language and made a case for his view that science needs an ethos in order to function. In

The Nuclear Revolution
Eric French
NEXA 340, Final
O ne of this age's great riddles is to mould a society in which its people are competent enough to understand both the scientific and cultural issues that bring themselves to bear on policy debates. No one person can possibly expect to learn enough about more than one field to be completely competent in each, and yet, the complexity of the decisions we face today almost require such a person to direct and create sound policy. This problem is particularly pronounced in the democracies of the world. The question of whether technocrats and scientists, or broad democratic consensus will yield the wisest decisions is not an easy one to answer. C.P. Snow and Jacob Bronowski are two men who have tried to answer this question, and whose works have made important contributions this issue. C.P. Snow pulls the veil away from the split in society between people of different persuasions (that is, between science and the humanities), and Bronowski explores the roots of both, showing that both share a common source, Taken in tandem, these two authors form a compelling argument that resolving this issue is not only possible, but essential.
