Knowledge is an unending adventure at the edge of uncertainty. Jacob Bronowski It is vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquillity: they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it. Jacob Bronowski Dissent is the native activity of the scientist, and it has got him into a good deal of trouble in the last years. But if that is cut off, what is left will not be a scientist. And I doubt whether it will be a man. Jacob Bronowski It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it. Jacob Bronowski No science is immune to the infection of politics and the corruption of power.

The Ascent of Man
Jacob Bronowski
Review date: 29/8/2001
Publisher: BBC, 1976
Published: 1973 Like Kenneth Clarke's Civilisation The Ascent of man is a series looked up to by every producer of factual, educational TV programmes. It probably wouldn't get made today, as its broad canvas is not really fashionable, and it is not about ordinary people. Its subject is the history of science, far removed from the pseudo-anthropology of "Reality TV". The arrangement of material is a little unusual; it is basically thematic, each chapter tracking a particular subject (evolution, or the structure of matter, say) to modern times. The coverage of each theme is also slightly idiosyncratic and yet is exceptionally clear, even when not accompanied by the TV picture (the text sometimes refers to footage, which can be slightly confusing). After thirty years, a fair amount is out of date, but much remains to form an excellent introduction to basic modern scientific ideas, including some of the best explanations of relativistic travel and a wonderful demonstration of Pythagoras' Theorem. Jacob Bronowski
It's unfortunate that the writings of Jacob Bronowski are not better-known. Sure, he wrote The Ascent of Man and made a television program of the same name, but it's his other works that I find fascinating (or did when I read them back in my teenage years). Just last night I started re-reading one of his books ( The Visionary Eye ) in preparation for writing an essay about him, and I found something immediately that I connected with strongly. The short essay in question was his introduction to a later release of his early book The Poet's Defence . He mentions that the role of the critic exists in the arts but not in science. Now, he doesn't think much of critics, and in that early work he tried to discover a philosophy of poetry through a reading of what some great poets (Pope, Blake, Housman, etc.) had written on the nature of poetry pointedly not through a reading of estheticians and literary critics. And Bronowski says it is valuable to do the same with science not depend on the armchair philosophers to come to a philosophy of science, but to see what scientists really do and what excellent scientists think about their vocation. Of course such a project must be reflective (separating the wheat from the chaff in the sometimes muddled thinking of practictioners), but it is empirical in a way that so much philosophy is not. I like Bronowski because he was a modern renaissance man (a writer of mathematical theorems and of poems, a researcher into biology and into ethics, a scientist and an artist). I like him too for his humanism. He was focused on facts (and essential facts at that), unlike our modern academics. His outlook was scientific but not materialistic. I hope to bring out some of these elements in the essay that I plan to write about him.

Rita Bronowski: godmother to the avant garde
The widow of the famed scientist is the consummate modern woman: sculptor, mentor, mother.

by Sue Garson

During the Spanish Civil War, a London-based humanitarian committee rescued orphaned Jewish children from Spain via Italian ships destined for Palestine. Sculptor Rita Coblenz and committee head Celia Bronowski, mother of renowned mathematician Jacob Bronowski, were among the volunteers. That's how Jacob (a Polish-born descendant of Talmudic scholars) and Rita (whose father walked from the Lithuanian Pale to England) met. The couple married on Feb. 17, 1941, during a daylight air raid on London. Their long collaboration produced four highly-accomplished daughters, 27 book editions on science, poetry and art, and such friends (pardon some unabashed namedropping) as Jonas Salk, Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick, Aldous Huxley, Anthony Hopkins, Mandell Weiss, playwright Samuel Beckett, philosopher C.P. Snow, and various members of the British Parliament (Labour Party) to name just a few. The rest is history - in a very big 20th Century way.
As his orbit expanded, Jonas Salk approached him; within days the two men agreed that Bronowski would be the first Deputy Director of the new Salk Institute. In 1963, the Bronowskis bought a lot on La Jolla Farms Road that overlooks Blacks Beach. Modernist architect Russell Forester designed an open floor plan California Sixties house with such English touches as walled interior gardens.

Gamaliel: An amusing review of a new biography of Warren G. Harding. Intriguing, to say the least! And I enjoyed the line “Truth be told, though, it may be that one of Harding’s most lasting contributions to American political culture is the (deservedly) oft-repeated verdict of William McAdoo on Harding’s stump speeches: ‘an army of pompous phrases moving over the landscape in search of an idea. Sometimes these meandering words actually capture a thought and bear it triumphantly, a prisoner in their midst, until it died of servitude and over work.’” Nothing, though, beats H.L. Mencken’s characterization of “Gamalielese,” reprinted in Marion Elizabeth Rogers, ed., The Impossible H.L. Mencken [H]e writes the worst English that I have ever encountered. It reminds me of a string of wet sponges; it reminds me of tattered washing on the line; it reminds me of pale bean soup, of college yells, of dogs barking idiotically through endless nights. It is so bad that a sort of grandeur creeps into it. It drags itself out of the dark abysm (I was about to write abscess!) of pish, and crawls insanely up to the topmost pinnacle of posh. It is rumble and bumble. It is flap and doodle. It is balder and dash.
But I grow lyrical….

"table coffee talk." Emigre 36, Fall 1995.
table coffee talk
My friends and I sit in the coffee house. We are only sometimes aware that our coffee is a seething mass of brownian motion, sometimes aware that the coffee cups are chaotic, yet still hold together and contain the coffee. We meet at a table, we talk, we pull out our ideas and examine them while not immersed, embroiled in the act of making design, art, music, writing, whatever. Coffee, we all need more coffee. People walk by and say hello. Sit down and join us. Time is different for each of us relative to the speed of light, according to the theory of relativity. The difference is so slight that we decide to act as if time is constant. And so we agree to meet at 10am on Friday. Our day doesn't officially begin until we read our horoscopes. This is my own concept of time, ritual, constructed reality. Am I really in a leaky boat and will not make it to where I am going? Newtonian physics explains only one small framework of reality, but that does not keep us from using it in our lives. In the same manner, graphic designers break down form into scale, type style, contrast and color to communicate to an observer that John Smith is speaking at 5pm at Memorial Auditorium. The words we use to talk about our work do not adequately describe the process or product of graphic design. This does not keep us from using this particular language in our making and critiquing of graphic design. Terms do not define graphic design any more than the theory of Newtonian physics or the daily horoscope define our world.
