Addendum A to "Bad Science, Worse Philosophy: the Quackery and Logic-Chopping of David Foster's The Philosophical Scientists" (2000) Introduction The concept of entropy is generally not well understood among laymen. With the help of several physicists, including Wolfgang Gasser and Malcolm Schreiber, I have composed the following article in an attempt to correct a common misunderstanding.[ ] Contrary to what many laymen think, there is no Law of Entropy which states that order must always decrease. That is a layman's fiction, although born from a small kernel of reality. The actual Law of Entropy is better known as the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The First Law is that energy is not created or destroyed, and the Third Law is that absolute zero cannot be achievedeach of these laws is actually entailed from the first, in conjunction with certain other assumptions. But it is the Second Law that many laymen incorrectly think says that order must always decrease. In traditional thermodynamics, entropy is a measure of the amount of energy in a closed system that is no longer available to effect changes in that system. A system is closed when no energy is being added to or removed from it, and energy becomes unavailable not by leaving the system, but by becoming irretrievably disordered, as a consequence of the laws of statistical mechanics. But even though the total amount of energy that is irretrievably disordered will increase, this does not mean order cannot increase somewhere else in that same system. This is where confusion arises. Of course, entropy can be measured in an open system, too, but this introduces additional variables, and of course the Second Law then no longer applies. But even when the Second Law applies, it is still possible for a closed system to produce order, even highly elaborate order, so long as there is a greater increase in disorder somewhere else in the system.

Why is it called Entropy?
It's a meeting place of Broodwar gamers like many other communities or channels. People tend to hang around a community or a channel for a while and become organized for a given period by playing together, learning, making friends etc. Then as time passes and the forces of entropy occur, people gradually move on to other channels or move on in life and the disorganization of these associations prevail.
What are Cohesion forces responsible for the channel's existence?
The main force of cohesion in entropy is the worship of the Fog of War. Everyone in entropy has a healthy paranoia against hackers. Even after many years of building a reputation as a Fog of War worshiper you will find that your game will always be scrutinized for signs of hacking. If you are caught hacking prepare for public humiliation. However like any group of worshipers they will always try to convert hackers to become Fog of War worshipers. They forgive but never forget.
The other force of cohesion is a passion for non money random maps. No one in entropy plays money maps and all dribble at the thought of playing a new unknown balanced map where the fog can be felt strongest.

If you weren't careful, you might think gravity could violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Start with a bunch of gas in outer space. Suppose it's homogeneously distributed. If it's big enough, it will start clumping up thanks to its gravitational self-attraction. So starting from complete disorder, it looks like we're getting some order! Doesn't this mean that the entropy of the gas is dropping? Well, it's a bit trickier than you might think. First of all, you have to remember that a gas cloud heats up as it collapses gravitationally! The clumping means you know more and more about the positions of the atoms in the cloud. But the heating up means you know less and less about their velocities. So there are two competing effects. It's not obvious which one wins! Let's do a little calculation to see how this works. The trick is to keep things simple so we can easily see what's going on. This requires some idealizations.

A userspace substitute for /dev/random, written in perl. One of the nice features of the Linux kernel (and certain *BSD kernels) is the /dev/random device. This is a little character device that gives you random numbers when you read it. In a variety of places scattered throughout the kernel, certain interrupts (network packets arriving, keyboard hits, mouse movement) cause a timestamp and some event information to be hashed into an "entropy pool". The pool, perhaps 4k in size, always contains very random data, but as bits are "stirred" in, a counter is incremented to reflect the fact that the poll is now even more random than before. When you read from /dev/random, you get a hashed portion of the pool, and the counter is decremented. This gives you high quality cryptographically strong random data. The Gnu Privacy Guard (GPG), along with many other encryption routines (pgp, ssh, even the sequence-number selection algorithm used by the kernel's TCP stack), use this device to seed a secure random number generator. Encryption uses lots of random data, and hybrid public-key/ symmetric-cipher encryption uses even more. EGD is an Entropy Gathering Daemon meant to be used on systems that can run GPG but which don't have this convenient source of random bits. It is a regular user-space program that sits around, running programs like 'w' and 'last' and 'vmstat', collecting the randomness (or at least the unpredictability) inherent in the output of these system statistics programs when used on a reasonably busy system. It slowly stirs the output of these gathering programs into a pool of entropy, much like the linux kernel device, and allows other programs to read out random bits from this pool.

Squestration in the Oil Sands
Soooo.... last year the federal government of Canada introduced a bunch of new environmental programs . This year, they threw a lot of that out the window . Now we have a new environmental program: legislating projects that produce large quantities of carbon dioxide to employ sequestration . These large sources are coal plants and oil sands developments. The obvious loophole for everyone to observe is that it only applies to projects started after 2011 , and there's evidently no grandfathering.
I'm not sure I believe whether they Conservative government actually intends to go through with this. Afterall, they are a minority government and while the opposition has no stomach for a new election, they aren't likely to last until 2011. The proof will really be in the activity in the oil patch. If they all rush to start projects before 2011 and have nothing scheduled after that, then maybe the Conservatives are actually serious.
Another question that crosses my mind is the quantity of good sequestration locations in close proximity to the main oil sands patch by Fort McMurray. Alberta is, generally speaking, a big sedimentary basin but the Northeast portion of the province is somewhat different if my memory is correct.
