Title: The entropy formula for the Ricci flow and its geometric applications
Authors: Grisha Perelman (Submitted on 11 Nov 2002) Abstract: We present a monotonic expression for the Ricci flow, valid in all dimensions and without curvature assumptions. It is interpreted as an entropy for a certain canonical ensemble. Several geometric applications are given. In particular, (1) Ricci flow, considered on the space of riemannian metrics modulo diffeomorphism and scaling, has no nontrivial periodic orbits (that is, other than fixed points); (2) In a region, where singularity is forming in finite time, the injectivity radius is controlled by the curvature; (3) Ricci flow can not quickly turn an almost euclidean region into a very curved one, no matter what happens far away. We also verify several assertions related to Richard Hamilton's program for the proof of Thurston geometrization conjecture for closed three-manifolds, and give a sketch of an eclectic proof of this conjecture, making use of earlier results on collapsing with local lower curvature bound. Entropy
Entropy is a chemical concept that is very difficult to explain, because a one-sentence definition will not lead to a comprehensive statement. Thus, few people understand what entropy really is. You are not alone if you have some difficulty with this concept. The word entropy is used in many other places and for many other aspects. We confine our discussion to thermodynamics (science dealing with heat and changes) and to chemical and physical processes. In this document, the term entropy is hyperlinked to different documents, each concentrated on some interesting aspects. This site is a general discussion by M.J. Mombourquette of Queen's University.

A little not-so-light reading...
Okay, so a while back I promised (warned?) that I'd be posting some of my writing out there for the blogosphere to check out.
Good, bad, or otherwise, it's out there. I've posted four pieces over at BlackHouse, my gin joint on the other side of the tracks.
Take a read, enjoy if it's your thing - but be forewarned: Pollyanna it ain't. It's all pretty dark, and some of it downright ugly - and if you go through that swingin' door thinking you're reading some kind of journal just because it's in first person, you're gonna come out disturbed. Sure, that darkness comes from somewhere, but by no means am I the narrator, except in "Cold."
At Scott's request, I'm going to try and write something happy one of these days. But for now, I'd love to hear feedback on those pieces.
Tell me what you love, hate, don't understand, tell me what speaks to you, whether my characters are believably real, tell me how the stuff makes you feel, if there are phrases that come to life or phrases that trip you up. That's what I'm interested in and how I'll grow as a writer. Gloves off, people. Comment away. Please. And thanks for reading. Posted by VikingGoddess at 10:16 PM 2 comments

format wars
Blu-Ray beat HD-DVD, and the high-res DVD format was is over. I pity the fools who bought HD-DVD players, which are basically worthless now. They're like those people at the race track who find themselves holding a fist full of worthless paper at the end of the race. (At least, that's what they do in movies.) Format wars are nothing new though. The battle over the color television protocol is an odd one. In 1950, the FCC ruled in favor of the CBS' proposal (because their demo worked well), but in 1953 was forced to reverse its decision because RCA kicked their ass in the marketplace. RCA's proposal evolved into NTSC, and all 100 CBS-compatible color TVs were scrap. The AC/DC war in the 1880s was even more colorful. AC power eventually triumphed, but DC had a large user base in New York City. Most buildings converted to AC or installed local transformers, but the local electric company (Con Edison) was still delivering DC power to a few customers until a few months ago

dubious nature
I added a "dubious" tag to something on Wikipedia. It was fun and satisfying and I recommend it if you can find a sufficiently unlikely allegation. I'm awarding myself bonus geek points because the fact in question is whether the commonly accepted date of a particular event is correct in the Gregorian or Julian calendar. The page currently claims Julian, but my preliminary research suggests otherwise.

In all of physics, there is perhaps no topic more underrated and misunderstood than entropy. The behavior of large collections of particles, such as the universe, a grain of sand, or a tuna salad sandwich, is dictated by two universal laws: one involving energy, the other involving entropy. And yet, while energy is described in great detail throughout any introductory physics textbook, entropy is relegated to about two or three pages, and is usually badly described.
Well, no more! Here's the real story of physics. Here's what really drives the universe. Here's what your physics instructor won't tell you. Here's entropy Other pages on entropy and the second law

http://www.pynchon.pomona.edu/entropy/index.html
Introduction Thomas Pynchon achieves an unusual synthesis of art and science, and develops the unique character of his ambitious, "post-modern" works with a renaissance conception of continuous knowledge. Engineering principals animate his fiction in literal explorations, and then escalate into larger thematic matter. The Crying of Lot 49 (1965) traces Entropy through the theoretical Maxwell's Demon device (the greatest historical challenge to the second law of thermodynamics), and also extends the property and Demon to metaphorically control and inform the journey of Oedipa Mass. Pynchon's reader travels an analogous odyssey to the protagonist, sorting information, flirting with chaos and circumnavigating truth.
Entropy
Entropy is a quantity that, in its two contexts, characterizes not only all form and life in the universe, but all signal, language, information and written material ever produced anywhere. There are two fields which define this concept: Thermodynamics is the science of the relations between heat and other forms of energy. It deals with the changes that occur in a system if the energy distribution is unbalanced, therefore it "can be regarded as governing the direction of all physical changes taking place in the universe. With time, the energy within a system will inevitably tend to become distributed in the most probable pattern, which consists of all the individual particles of the system engaging in random, disordered motion" (OED). Thermodynamic entropy is the measure of this disorganization in a system. Furthermore, this "most probable pattern" is actually a state of equal energy among particles, as collisions cause bodies to exchange heat. A closed system inevitably proceeds toward uniformity of energy.

http://www.mathpages.com/home/kmath184/kmath184.htm
Energy, Entropy, Enthalpy The science of thermodynamics is founded on two principles, both of which involve the concept of energy . The first principle asserts that energy is conserved, i.e., energy can neither be created nor destroyed. The second principle asserts that the overall distribution of energy tends to become more uniform, never less uniform. These two principles are called the first and second laws of thermodynamics. As with all fundamental physical principles, the first law of thermodynamics is actually a way of organizing our knowledge. The first law essentially defines energy as a quantity that is conserved, and we use this principle to classify and quantify various phenomena in such a way as to make the principle true. For example, we might originally define the energy of a macroscopic object as half the product of its mass times the square of its [aggregate] speed, but if we take two identical lumps of clay and throw them together at high speed, the total system initially has energy but after the collision has none – because the lumps of clay stick together and the combined lump has zero [aggregate] speed. This definition of energy is essentially equivalent to Leibniz’s vis viva , which literally translated means “living force”, but using the word “force” to signify what we today would call energy. Clarke pointed out that this quantity is not conserved in such collisions, and Leibniz replied

I just did THE COOLEST THING. Anna and I have been playing Rockband all night. A minute ago, I played the guitar part for "Say It Ain't So" AND she held the mic up so I could sing along. Now, I know it's the easiest song on the list, but both instruments were set to the medium level, so I get a little street cred for that. Also, I'm almost missing the top part of my left index finger after a knife incident this week, so yeah. I'm awesome. I totally got 4.25 stars. You're welcome. Love, Zelda at 02:54 AM Comments (0)

Batman for President (of the universe). Hello, all. I'm coming to you late this evening by way of not having to get up early thanks to spring break. Woo! It's nice to have a week off to do pretty much nothing. I'm planning on getting a lot of work done in the apartment and also in the area of art and webdesign, but we'll see. The apartment comes first. I really need to put the rest of the comic wall back up because it hasn't been fixed since we added more tracks. I'll take pictures when it's finished. It is a glorious sight. We got tons of snow this weekend; it looked like more than a foot. Wednesday was bad because we had had an ice storm late Tuesday evening and then gotten a little snow, so the roads were horrendous, and then after a short break on Thursday, snow hit us again Friday morning all the way through the very early hours of Sunday. It was awesome, especially since it was a weekend so it's not like it held us up from doing anything important like work or school. We did go out with our friends on Friday night, but Saturday and Sunday were spent at a leisurely pace of watching DC universe cartoons. Yay!
