In your day-to-day life, you intuitively understand how entropy works whenever you pour sugar in your coffee or melt an ice cube in a glass . Entropy can affect the space into which a substance spreads, its phase change from solid to liquid to gas, or its position. In physics , entropy is a mathematical measurement of a change from greater to lesser potential energy, related to the second law of thermodynamics. Entropy comes from a Greek word meaning, "transformation." This definition gives us insight into why things seemingly transform for no reason. Systems can only maintain organization on a molecular level as long as energy is added. For example, water will boil only as long as you hold a pan over flames. You're adding heat, a form of kinetic energy, to speed up the molecules in the water. If the heat source is removed, we all can guess that the water will gradually cool to about room temperature. This is due to entropy, because the water molecules tend to use up their accumulated potential energy, release heat, and end up with a lower potential energy. Temperature isn't the only transformation involved in entropy. The changes always involve moving from disequilibrium to equilibrium, consistent with moving to decreasing order. For instance, molecules always spread out to uniformly fill a container. When we drip food coloring in a clear glass of water, even if we don't stir it, that united concentration of a drop will gradually spread out until every part of the water has the same density of color.

I'm surrounded by the "liberal media" if you listen to the goofball behind me. An anti-Hillary guy is running around here trying to push the Central America-CIA-cocaine connection... Anyway.
This debate is crucial. The polls predict an Obama win Saturday but you have to remember New Hampshire. The most recent polls have Obama at around 45%, Hillary in the 30s and Edwards in the teens. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin composed a satire, “Essay on Daylight Saving,” proposing a law that would oblige Parisians to get up an hour earlier in summer. By putting the daylight to better use, he reasoned, they’d save a good deal of money — 96 million livres tournois — that might otherwise go to buying candles. Now this switch to daylight saving time (which occurs early Sunday in the United States) is an annual ritual in Western countries. Even more influential has been something else Franklin said about time in the same year: time is money. He meant this only as a gentle reminder not to “sit idle” for half the day. He might be dismayed if he could see how literally, and self-destructively, we take his metaphor today. Our society is obsessed as never before with making every single minute count. People even apply the language of banking: We speak of “having” and “saving” and “investing” and “wasting” it.

This format can be read from a Web browser by using the Acrobat Reader helper application, which is available for free downloading from Adobe The current version is a slightly revised version of the second printing (1991) of the Springer-Verlag book of the same name, which is now out of print. This corrected version is made available with the permission of Springer-Verlag and it hopefully will eventually lead to a more serious revision further developing the properties of relative entropy. Permission is hereby given to freely print and circulate copies of this book so long as it is left intact and not reproduced for commercial purposes. The author would welcome all typos and comments.

By design Beats Entropy is largely non partisan, and broadly irrelevant, in the scope of world affairs. Neither are we pundits, nor participants, in the political process. To be honest most of are partially illiterate, and at least one a registered sex offender . While this keeps us from voting, it does not dispel our fascination with the surreal disgrace poetry that is American Politics. More specifically: the presidential race. Thus we have decided to enter the polemic, and weigh in on the candidates in a substantive manner.  In the past I have made my preferences known , but you can be assured I am professional enough to put that aside and give a unbiased analysis on the pieces in play. An online introduction to maxent This is a high-level tutorial on how to use MaxEnt for modelling discrete stochastic processes. The motivating example is the task of determining the most appropriate translation of a French word in context. The tutorial discusses the process of growing an exponential model by automatic feature selection ("inductive learning," if you will) and also the task of estimating maximum-likelihood parameters for a model containing a fixed set of features. Convexity, Maximum Likelihood and All That This note is meant as a gentle but comprehensive introduction to the expectation-maximization (EM) and improved iterative scaling (IIS) algorithms, two popular techniques in maximum likelihood estimation. The focus in this tutorial is on the foundation common to the two algorithms: convex functions and their convenient properties. Where examples are called for, we draw from applications in human language technology.

Pioneered in by Reuven Rubinstein as an efficient method for the estimation of rare-event probabilities, the cross-entropy (CE) method has rapidly developed into a powerful and versatile technique for both rare-event simulation and combinatorial optimisation The method derives its name from the cross-entropy ( or Kullback-Leibler) distance - a well known measure of "information", which has been successfully employed in diverse fields of engineering and science, and in particular in neural computation , for about half a century. The CE method is an iterative method, which involves the following two phases:
  • Generation of a sample of random data (trajectories, vectors, etc.) according to a specified random mechanism. Updating the parameters of the random mechanism, on the basis of the data, in order to produce a "better" sample in the next iteration.
The significance of the cross-entropy concept is that it defines a precise mathematical framework for deriving fast, and in some sense "optimal" updating/learning rules.

Calculating Entropy for Data Mining

Information theory (IT) is a foundational subject for computer scientists, engineers, statisticians, data miners, biologists, and cognitive scientists. Unfortunately, PHP currently lacks software tools that would make it easy to explore and/or use IT concepts and methods to solve data analytic problems. This two-part series aims to remedy this situation by:
  • Introducing you to foundational information theory concepts. Implementing these foundational concepts as classes using PHP and SQL. Using these classes to mine web data.
  • This introduction will focus on forging theoretical and practical connections between information theory and database theory. An appreciation of these linkages opens up the possibility of using information theory concepts as a foundation for the design of data mining tools. We will take the first steps down that path.
    Univariate and Bivariate Entropy
    The central concept of this series is entropy The goal of this article is to explore the descriptive uses of entropy in the context of summarizing web access log data. You will learn how to compute entropy for a single database column of values (i.e., univariate entropy) and what the resulting entropy score means. The goal is to obtain a practical appreciation for what entropy measures in order to tackle inference problems that arise in more complex bivariate and multivariate contexts.
