Linus Carl Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon, on 28th February, 1901, the son of a druggist, Herman Henry William Pauling, who, though born in Missouri, was of German descent, and his wife, Lucy Isabelle Darling, born in Oregon of English-Scottish ancestry.
Linus attended the public elementary and high schools in the town of Condon and the city of Portland, Oregon, and entered the Oregon State College in 1917, receiving the degree of B.Sc. in chemical engineering in 1922. During the years 1919-1920 he served as a full-time teacher of quantitative analysis in the State College, after which he was appointed a Teaching Fellow in Chemistry in the California Institute of Technology and was a graduate student there from 1922 to 1925, working under Professor Roscoe G. Dickinson and Richard C. Tolman. In 1925 he was awarded the Ph.D. ( summa cum laude ) in chemistry, with minors in physics and mathematics.
Since 1919 his interest lay in the field of molecular structure and the nature of the chemical bond, inspired by papers by Irving Langmuir on the application of the Lewis theory of the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms to many substances. In 1921 he suggested, and attempted to carry out, an experiment on the orientation of iron atoms by a magnetic field, through the electrolytic deposition of a layer of iron in a strong magnetic field and the determination of the orientation of the iron crystallises by polishing and etching the deposit, and microscopic examination of the etch figures. With Professor Dickinson, he began in 1922 the experimental determination of the structures of some crystals, and also started theoretical work on the nature of the chemical bond.

The quantum mechanics developed in the 1920s was quickly applied to problems of bonding and structure, which was the focus of much of the prolific research of Linus Carl Pauling (1901–1994) and earned him the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1954. Born in Portland, Oregon, Pauling received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in chemistry from California Institute of Technology—despite the economic difficulties experienced by his family. After a European sojourn investigating the implications of the new quantum mechanics for chemistry, mainly in Munich with the theoretical physicist Arnold Sommerfeld, he joined the faculty at Caltech, where he remained until 1963. Then after a short stay at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara, California, he resumed his laboratory research at the University of California at San Diego, from which he moved on to Stanford University, and finally to the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in Palo Alto. Among his accomplishments, he determined crystal structures by X-ray crystallography and the structures of gas molecules by electron diffraction. He studied the magnetic properties of substances, including hemoglobin, which helped him ascertain the molecular cause of sickle-cell anemia. He developed an electronegativity scale to assign to atoms involved in covalent and ionic bonding, and he formulated the concept of "resonance" to talk about the state where of a chemical system where none of the classical structural formulas is entirely consistent with observed properties. He extended the theory of covalent bonds to include metals and intermetallic compounds. He proposed helical structures for proteins based on the coplanarity of the atoms in the peptide bond. But Pauling is perhaps best known to the public for championing the use of vitamin C to maintain and restore health.

Linus Carl Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 28, 1901. His education was delayed because of financial responsibility for his mother and younger siblings (his father died when he was 9). In 1925 he received his Ph.D. in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology, where he served on the faculty until 1964. In 1969, Dr. Pauling became Research Professor, then president, at Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, Menlo Park, California. Dr. Pauling has been deeply concerned with the alleviation of human suffering and has taken some unpopular positions. For example, he was against cigarette smoking, war, nuclear weapons, and allowing preventable hereditary diseases in humans to continue. His achievements in science, medicine, and human welfare have brought him many honorary degrees and awards, including the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. He has published more than 400 papers and books including General Chemistry, The Architecture of Molecules

Linus Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon in 1901. He is the only person ever to recieve a Nobel Prize for science and a Nobel Peace Prize. He received the science award in 1954 for his work in chemistry into the nature of the chemical bond. His work in chemistry is important both in range and importance of his contributions. He studied quantum mechanics with the physicists, Bohr and Schrödinger and combined quantum mechanics with the idea of electron pair sharing. He explained many important concepts in his classic book „The Nature of the Chemical Bond". From 1936 onwards he devoted much of his research to biochemical problems, including the structure of proteins, sickle cell anaemia and the effects of vitamins disease. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in promoting nuclear disarmament which led to the signing of a nuclear test ban in 1962.

Linus Pauling
Linus Carl Pauling (1901-1994), a distinguished American chemist, helped to integrate chemistry with quantum theory and founded the discipline now called molecular biology. From 1945 on much of his time was devoted to antiwar activities and stopping the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. He is the only person to win two unshared Nobel Prizes, one for chemistry and one for peace. The Pauling family came from a German Lutheran background, but Linus's parents were not especially active in church affairs. He was born in Portland, Oregon to Herman Pauling, a self-trained pharmacist, and Lucy Darling. His father was very supportive, but died when Linus was nine. He started working to help support his mother and two sisters at twelve. Despite this, he made good grades in school, became an avid reader, and had a pleasant and adventurous childhood. Linus first expressed his scientific interest in collecting insects and rock mineral samples. He was introduced to the world of chemistry by Lloyd Jeffress, a classmate who became a lifelong friend. Recognizing Linus's unusual abilities and devotion to class work, his high school teachers encouraged him and allowed him to work independently in the school laboratory. He also excelled in the language arts, including public speaking. Like his father he was an extremely hard worker and possessed great self-confidence, but was reserved.
